St. Louis managed it like a team trying to survive the calendar.That is the part for the fan base that stings.The Brewers won the opener 4-3, then buried the Cardinals 10-2 in the second game. On paper, you can explain some of it away. Milwaukee had Jacob Misiorowski going in Game 1, and he struck out 11. Robert Gasser was outstanding in Game 2, giving the Brewers 7 2/3 strong innings. Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Pitcher of the Day St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurBraden Davis Gives Springfield a Winning Start in Tough Road Loss Braden Davis did his job Tuesday night.The Springfield Cardinals did not finish the night with the win, falling 4-3 to the Tulsa Drillers at ONEOK Field, but Davis gave them every chance to take the opener.The left-hander worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking three and striking out eight. It was a strong road start against a good Tulsa club, and for most of the night, it looked like it might be enough.Davis had swing-and-miss working early and often. He struck out eight of the 20 batters he faced, kept the Drillers from putting together big innings, and left the game with Springfield in position to win.That is the job.The Cardinals gave him an early lead when Travis Honeyman homered in the first inning. Springfield added another run in the third, then Dakota Harris hit a solo home run in the sixth to put the Cardinals ahead 3-1.Davis kept Tulsa quiet through the first five innings and into the sixth, holding the Drillers to just three hits. His command was not spotless, with three walks and a balk, but he competed through traffic and kept damage off the board.That is what mattered most.The game turned after Davis exited. Tulsa scored twice in the seventh to tie it, then pushed across the winning run in the ninth. The bullpen could not protect the lead, and Springfield’s offense, which struck out 14 times, could not add on late.Still, Davis’ outing stood apart.On a night when Memphis staged a wild comeback and Cade Winquest struck out six over two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, Davis gets the nod because of the length and quality of his start. He gave Springfield 5.1 innings of one-run baseball on the road, missed bats, and handed the game over with the Cardinals in position to win.That is a winning start, even when the final score does not cooperate.For Davis, the eight strikeouts were another reminder of the arm talent. When he is around the zone and getting ahead, he can make hitters uncomfortable. Tulsa found very little against him, and the game was still in Springfield’s hands when his night ended.Baseball can be cruel that way.A starter can do enough to deserve the win and still leave with nothing attached to his name in the final box score. But the organization will know what he did. The line tells the story.5.1 innings. Three hits. One run. Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Player of the Day St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurMatt Koperniak Powers Memphis Comeback With Four-RBI NightMatt Koperniak picked the right night to deliver one of his biggest swings of the season.The Memphis Redbirds were staring at a tough road loss Tuesday night at Gwinnett. They had fallen behind early, trailed 5-1 after four innings and were still chasing the Stripers late in the game.Then Memphis did what good clubs do.The Redbirds kept coming.Koperniak was right in the middle of it, going 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in Memphis’ 11-6, 10-inning win over Gwinnett. It was the kind of complete offensive night that does more than fill a stat line. It helps change the direction of a game.Memphis trailed 3-0 after two innings and 5-1 after four, but the Redbirds scored three times in the sixth to get back in it. They added two more runs in the ninth to tie the game, then exploded for five runs in the 10th to put it away.That is when a lineup shows its backbone.Koperniak’s production was a major part of the comeback. He reached base three times, drove in four runs and scored twice, giving Memphis exactly the kind of veteran offensive presence it needed in a game that could have slipped away early.Leo Bernal also had a strong case for Player of the Day after going 2-for-5 with his 10th home run of the season and four RBIs. Nolan Gorman reached base five times, homered, walked four times and scored twice. The Cardinal Chronicle McGreevy Gets the Ball to Face the Brewers St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals have reached the point in this series where there is no use dressing it up.They need a win.After dropping the opener Monday night and then getting swept in Tuesday’s doubleheader, St. Louis returns to Busch Stadium on Wednesday night looking to stop a four-game losing streak and keep the first-place Milwaukee Brewers from completely taking control of this five-game division set.First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT, with right-hander Michael McGreevy getting the ball for the Cardinals against Brewers left-hander Kyle Harrison.Milwaukee enters the game at 58-33, while St. Louis comes in at 47-43. The Brewers have won the first three games of the series and continue to play like a club that knows exactly who it is. The Cardinals, meanwhile, are trying to steady themselves after three straight frustrating losses to the team setting the pace in the National League Central.Monday was the one that got away.Dustin May gave the Cardinals a strong start, St. Louis built a 3-0 lead, and then Milwaukee turned one seventh inning into a 4-3 win. Tuesday’s first game followed a similar script. The Cardinals got home runs from Jordan Walker and Iván Herrera, Bruce Zimmermann gave them five competitive innings in his team debut, but Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11, Christian Yelich delivered a big day at the plate, and Milwaukee rallied late again for another 4-3 win.Then Game 2 got away completely.The Brewers beat the Cardinals 10-2 in the nightcap, with Robert Gasser giving Milwaukee 7 2/3 strong innings and Luis Lara driving in two runs in his major league debut. They need strikes, efficiency and length. They need him to keep the Brewers off the bases early and avoid forcing the bullpen to cover too much of the game.That last part matters more after a doubleheader.The Cardinals used multiple arms Tuesday, and the last thing they need Wednesday is a short start that turns the game into another bullpen test by the fourth or fifth inning. McGreevy does not have to be perfect. He does have to control the pace and give St. Louis a chance to breathe.The challenge is a Milwaukee lineup that is seeing the ball well and getting production from several spots.Yelich has been a problem in this series. Brice Turang has been a problem. Joey Ortiz helped break open Tuesday’s second game. Lara gave the Brewers immediate production in his debut. William Contreras, Jackson Chourio, Sal Frelick and the rest of the lineup give Milwaukee the kind of balance that can wear down a pitching staff.This is not a lineup built only on power.It is built on pressure.That means McGreevy has to limit free baserunners. Walks, hit batters and defensive mistakes cannot be part of the story. Against Milwaukee, a harmless inning can turn into a two-run problem in a hurry.The Cardinals also have to find a way to solve Harrison.The Brewers left-hander enters at 8-1 with a 2.82 ERA and 99 strikeouts. He gives Milwaukee another quality starter in a series where the Cardinals have already had to deal with Shane Drohan, Misiorowski and Gasser. Harrison has been steady, effective and difficult to square up when he is working ahead.The Cardinals cannot let him cruise.That means the right-handed bats have to be ready. Walker’s power remains central to the lineup. Herrera has shown he can change a game with one swing. Velázquez went deep Tuesday night. Masyn Winn, Blaze Jordan, Pedro Pagés and the rest of the right-handed group have to make Harrison work from the first inning.But this cannot be a one-swing offense.The Cardinals need traffic. They need better at-bats with runners on base. They need to turn leadoff baserunners into runs. They need to stop settling for isolated home runs while Milwaukee stacks innings together.That has been the difference in the series.Milwaukee has turned pressure into runs.St. Louis has too often turned opportunities into almost.Wednesday’s game is not going to decide the division by itself, but it does matter. The Cardinals entered this five-game set with a chance to make up ground against the club in front of them. Instead, the Brewers have taken the first three and widened the gap. St. Louis still has two games left in the series, but it cannot afford to let the entire week slip away at home.A win Wednesday would not fix everything.It would stop the slide. It would give McGreevy a needed result. It would give the Cardinals a chance to salvage something from the final two games. It would keep Busch Stadium from feeling like Milwaukee’s weekend extension.A loss would make the finale feel like damage control.The Cardinals are still in the race, but this series has exposed the difference between hanging around and taking control. Milwaukee has played clean, confident baseball. It represents perseverance, opportunity and one of the better bullpen stories in baseball this season.O’Brien was named to the National League All-Star team Tuesday, giving the Cardinals another representative in the Midsummer Classic and giving one of the league’s most productive closers the recognition his first half earned.The 31-year-old right-hander was added to the National League roster as a replacement for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes. It is O’Brien’s first career All-Star selection and a remarkable achievement for a pitcher who is still playing his first full big-league season.That is what makes the story so good.O’Brien did not arrive in St. Louis as a household name. He did not enter the season with the reputation of a long-established closer. But when the Cardinals needed someone to take control of the ninth inning, O’Brien stepped into the role and made it his own.The results speak for themselves.O’Brien entered the selection with 22 saves in 26 opportunities, 35 strikeouts over 36.1 innings and a 3.72 ERA. The outings have not always been easy on the nerves, and Cardinals fans have learned that the ninth inning with O’Brien can sometimes come with a little extra blood pressure.But the job description for a closer is simple.Get the final three outs.O’Brien has done that better than almost anyone in the National League.His 22 saves put him at or near the top of the league, and in a season where the Cardinals’ bullpen has had its share of uneven moments, O’Brien has been one of the club’s most important stabilizing forces. One All-Star closer does not solve every bullpen question, fix every roster issue or guarantee October baseball. Cardinal Chronicle Morning Farm Report St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurMemphis Rallies Late, but Cardinals Affiliates Drop Three of FourThe St. Louis Cardinals’ full-season affiliates went 1-3 Tuesday night, with Memphis providing the lone win in a wild 10-inning comeback at Gwinnett.The Redbirds rallied from an early deficit, tied the game in the ninth and exploded for five runs in the 10th to beat the Stripers, 11-6. Springfield got a strong start from Braden Davis and home runs from Travis Honeyman and Dakota Harris, but lost 4-3 on the road at Tulsa. Peoria was buried by a pair of big middle innings in a 14-4 loss at Quad Cities, while Palm Beach fell behind early and lost 12-7 at Daytona despite a three-double night from Trevor Haskins and three RBIs from Ryan Weingartner.It was a rough night across the lower levels, but Memphis gave the system a comeback worth leading with.Memphis Redbirds Memphis 11, Gwinnett 6 — 10 innings Memphis: 53-35 overallMemphis turned a frustrating night into one of its better comeback wins of the season.The Redbirds beat the Gwinnett Stripers 11-6 in 10 innings Tuesday night, overcoming early deficits of 3-0 and 5-1 before tying the game in the ninth and blowing it open in the 10th.Gwinnett scored three runs in the second inning and added two more in the fourth, putting Memphis in a 5-1 hole. The Redbirds started the climb in the sixth with three runs, then trailed 6-4 entering the ninth before scoring twice to force extra innings.Once the game reached the 10th, Memphis unloaded.The Redbirds scored five runs in the top of the inning, turning a tied game into an 11-6 lead and giving the bullpen enough room to finish it.Leo Bernal and Matt Koperniak carried the big bats for Memphis. Bernal went 2-for-5 with his 10th home run of the season, four RBIs and two runs scored. Koperniak also drove in four runs, going 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and a walk. Nolan Gorman added his third home run and reached base five times, going 1-for-2 with four walks and two runs scored.Colton Ledbetter also had a strong night, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and a run scored. César Prieto added two hits and an RBI.Brandt Thompson started for Memphis and allowed five runs on six hits over four innings. The game could have gotten away from the Redbirds there, but the bullpen changed the night.Cade Winquest was electric in relief, striking out six over two scoreless innings. Scott Blewett followed with two scoreless innings of his own, and Tink Hence worked the final two innings, allowing one run while striking out two.Old School Take: Memphis got buried early, but the Redbirds did not stay buried. Bernal and Koperniak drove in eight runs between them, Gorman kept getting on base, and Winquest helped flip the game from the bullpen. Quad Cities answered with a haymaker.The Chiefs lost 14-4 to the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday night at Modern Woodmen Park after the game unraveled in the middle innings.Peoria scored twice in the top of the first inning and had an early chance to set the tone. Quad Cities answered with one run in the bottom half, tied it in the third, moved ahead in the fifth and then broke the game wide open with seven runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.That was the ballgame.Peoria finished with nine hits, but the Chiefs could not keep pace once Quad Cities started stacking crooked numbers. Jack Gurevitch led the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jalin Flores, Michael Dattalo and José Suárez each drove in a run. Sammy Hernandez added his 10th double of the season.Tai Peete went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Ian Petrutz also reached twice with a hit and a walk.Yhoiker Fajardo started for Peoria and allowed two runs on three hits over 3.1 innings. He walked two and struck out five. Gerardo Salas followed with 1.2 innings, allowing one run while striking out two.The game got away in the sixth when José Davila allowed seven runs on six hits. Jason Savacool gave up four more in the seventh, and by then Peoria was chasing a game it was not going to catch.Jawilme Ramírez finished with a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.Old School Take: Peoria had a 2-0 lead before some fans had settled into their seats, but the middle innings swallowed the game whole. When you give up 11 runs across two innings, there is not much mystery left in the box score.Palm Beach Cardinals Daytona 12, Palm Beach 7 Palm Beach: 43-39 overallPalm Beach showed some fight, but Daytona had too much offense.The Cardinals lost 12-7 to the Daytona Tortugas on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, as Daytona scored seven runs over the first two innings and kept adding on from there.Palm Beach fell behind 4-0 in the first and 7-0 after the second. The Cardinals answered with four runs in the third and three more in the fourth, cutting into the deficit and making it a game. But Daytona scored in five of the first seven innings and finished with 17 hits.Trevor Haskins had the best offensive night for Palm Beach, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Weingartner doubled and drove in three runs, while Sebastian Dos Santos drove in two. Matthew Miura singled, stole a base and scored a run. Chase Heath singled, was hit by a pitch and scored twice.Chase Davis also appeared in the lineup for Palm Beach, going 0-for-3 with a walk.Cade Crossland started and had a rare rough outing, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in one inning. Yadiel Batista followed and allowed five runs, four earned, over three innings. Jesús García gave Palm Beach two innings and allowed one unearned run, while Anthony Watts and Antoni Cuello each allowed a run in relief.Palm Beach had six hits, drew four walks and scored seven runs, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.Old School Take: Palm Beach did not quit after falling behind 7-0, and that matters. But Daytona kept swinging, kept adding on and made sure the Cardinals never got all the way back.Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day Matt Koperniak, OF, MemphisMatt Koperniak earns Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day honors after helping power Memphis’ comeback win at Gwinnett.Koperniak went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in the Redbirds’ 11-6, 10-inning win. On a night when Memphis had to rally from a four-run deficit, Koperniak’s production was a major part of the comeback.Leo Bernal had an equally strong case after going 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs of his own. Nolan Gorman also reached base five times and homered. But Koperniak’s full line, including the walk and four RBIs, gives him the edge.The Redbirds needed offense in waves Tuesday night. Koperniak gave them one of the biggest ones.That is why he is the Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day.Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day Braden Davis, LHP, SpringfieldBraden Davis gets the nod as Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day after giving Springfield a strong start in its 4-3 loss at Tulsa.Davis worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking three and striking out eight. He kept the Drillers off balance, gave the Cardinals a chance to win and left with Springfield in position to take the opener.The bullpen could not hold the lead, but that should not take away from Davis’ outing.Cade Winquest also deserves mention after striking out six over two scoreless innings for Memphis, but Davis’ length and effectiveness as a starter make him the choice here.A road start with 5.1 innings, one run and eight strikeouts will play.
