The Cardinal Chronicle Desert Storm Finale: Cardinals, Diamondbacks Settle Series Sunday St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe first two games settled nothing.The St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks will return to Chase Field on Sunday afternoon with the series tied at one game apiece and the winner leaving Phoenix with an important series victory to open the second half.St. Louis took Friday night’s opener, 5-4, before Arizona answered with a 5-3 victory Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals enter the finale at 51-46, while the Diamondbacks are 50-48 and remain only 1½ games behind St. Louis in the crowded National League postseason race.This is not a must-win game in the traditional sense. There are still more than two months left on the schedule.It is, however, the kind of game that can matter when teams begin sorting through tiebreakers and missed opportunities in September.The Cardinals have an opportunity to win a road series against one of the teams directly behind them in the standings. The veteran left-hander has averaged six innings per start while posting a 1.17 WHIP.Rodriguez is not an overpowering strikeout pitcher, averaging 6.2 strikeouts per nine innings, but that is part of what makes him effective. He changes speeds, moves the ball around the strike zone and rarely gives hitters the same look twice.He is comfortable allowing hitters to put the ball in play because he generally avoids the damaging mistake.The Cardinals will counter with Andre Pallante, who has become one of the rotation’s most dependable competitors.Pallante enters Sunday at 10-6 with a 3.96 ERA through 18 starts. He has averaged approximately 5⅔ innings per outing with a 1.26 WHIP and 6.5 strikeouts per nine innings.The Cardinals know what Pallante brings.He will attack the strike zone, work quickly and try to keep the baseball on the ground. His success will depend less on strikeouts than weak contact, double-play opportunities and the defense behind him.That formula can work against Arizona, but only if Pallante avoids walks and keeps the top of the Diamondbacks’ order from creating traffic.What Happened FridayThe Cardinals opened the second half with a 5-4 victory that required nearly every bit of their margin for error.Michael McGreevy gave St. Louis 6⅓ strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. J.J. Wetherholt homered, Masyn Winn drove in three runs and Iván Herrera delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning.St. Louis appeared to be in control after taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but Corbin Carroll tied the game with a two-run home run.Rather than allowing the game to get away, the Cardinals answered immediately.José Fermín reached base in the ninth and eventually scored when Herrera lifted a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, giving St. Louis a lead it would not surrender.It was not always clean, but it was the kind of road victory good teams find a way to finish.What Happened SaturdayArizona responded Saturday by jumping on Dustin May and building a 5-0 lead.May allowed five runs over five innings, walking four and throwing a wild pitch. The game turned quickly in the third inning when the Diamondbacks scored three times in a span of six pitches.May failed to cover home plate after a wild pitch allowed Ketel Marte to score, then surrendered a single and a walk before former Cardinal Nolan Arenado drove in two runs with a double.The Cardinals did not score until the sixth inning, when Jordan Walker delivered an RBI single and extended his on-base streak to 20 games. St. Louis added another run in the inning, but its comeback stalled with the potential tying run still several batters away.Jimmy Crooks provided one final push with a 443-foot solo home run over the pool in right-center field in the ninth inning, forcing Arizona to use closer Paul Sewald in a game the Diamondbacks once led by five.The effort was encouraging.The five-run hole was not.Jordan Walker Continues to Set the PaceWalker remains the hitter at the center of everything the Cardinals want to accomplish offensively.He enters Sunday batting .293 with a .354 on-base percentage, a .526 slugging percentage, 22 home runs and 75 RBIs. His RBI single Saturday extended his on-base streak to 20 games.Arizona knows Walker is the hitter it cannot allow to beat them.That puts added responsibility on J.J. Wetherholt, Iván Herrera and Alec Burleson to reach base ahead of him and on the hitters behind him to prevent the Diamondbacks from pitching around him.Wetherholt enters Sunday with a .360 on-base percentage and 14 home runs. Burleson is batting .275 with 15 home runs and 67 RBIs, while Herrera owns a .372 on-base percentage.The Cardinals cannot depend on Walker to manufacture the entire offense himself.Rodriguez is too experienced to let one hitter control the game. St. Louis will need quality at-bats throughout the lineup.Crooks Makes His CaseCrooks’ ninth-inning home run Saturday did not change the outcome, but it gave the Cardinals something positive to carry into the finale.The ball traveled 443 feet and cleared the swimming pool in right-center field, a reminder of the left-handed power Crooks can provide.The Cardinals have been looking for production from the lower portion of the order. A dangerous bat near the bottom changes the way pitchers approach the hitters in front of him and gives the lineup another opportunity to turn over for Wetherholt, Herrera and Walker.Whether Crooks starts Sunday or is available from the bench, Saturday’s swing was one of the most encouraging moments of an otherwise frustrating afternoon.Pallante Must Control the Running GameArizona’s offense is not built solely around home runs.The Diamondbacks have hit only 91 home runs, the second-lowest total in Major League Baseball entering Sunday, but they can create pressure with speed, aggressive baserunning and contact throughout the lineup.Corbin Carroll is the obvious threat.Carroll enters the finale batting .250 with a .345 on-base percentage, 14 home runs and the speed to turn a walk or routine single into immediate scoring pressure.Pallante must vary his timing, hold runners close and give his catcher an opportunity to control the running game.The Cardinals also cannot provide Arizona with extra baserunners through walks or defensive mistakes. Ground-ball pitchers depend on their defense, but every additional ball put in play creates another opportunity for something to go wrong.Pallante’s best defense will be getting ahead in the count and keeping the Diamondbacks from sitting on one pitch.The Arenado FactorNolan Arenado made his presence felt Saturday.The former Cardinal entered the series with plenty of attention surrounding his first games against St. Louis as a member of the Diamondbacks. His two-run double Saturday helped turn a manageable deficit into a 4-0 hole.Arenado enters Sunday batting .244 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs.Those numbers do not jump off the page, but the Cardinals already know what he can do when a pitcher makes a mistake with runners on base.Pallante cannot allow the situation to dictate the pitch.The Cardinals must attack Arenado according to the scouting report, not the history attached to the matchup. He is no longer the leader in their clubhouse or the third baseman standing behind their pitchers.He is simply another dangerous hitter trying to beat them.Bullpen ConsiderationsBoth clubs have been forced to use important relievers during the first two games.The Cardinals needed their late-inning bullpen to survive Friday after Arizona tied the game in the eighth. The Diamondbacks were forced to use Sewald in the ninth inning Saturday after Crooks’ home run reduced a five-run lead to two.That makes length from Pallante particularly valuable.The Cardinals do not need seven shutout innings. They need Pallante to keep the game under control and avoid forcing Oliver Marmol to begin covering innings before the middle of the game.The ideal formula remains the same: get five or six competitive innings from the starter, keep the score within reach and create a path to Riley O’Brien in the ninth.Sunday could become a bullpen game late.The team that gets the most length from its starter will have more options when it does.Keys to the GameMake Rodriguez WorkRodriguez averages six innings per start because opponents allow him to work efficiently. The Cardinals need long at-bats, foul balls and runners on base early.Win the First Three InningsSt. Louis played from behind throughout Saturday. Falling into another early hole against Rodriguez would make the afternoon considerably more difficult.Get Runners on Base Ahead of WalkerWetherholt and Herrera must continue setting the table. Walker is at his most dangerous when Arizona cannot simply pitch around him.Keep Carroll and Marte Off BaseArizona’s lineup becomes much more dangerous when Carroll and Ketel Marte reach ahead of Arenado and Gabriel Moreno.Turn Ground Balls Into OutsPallante will give the Cardinals’ infield opportunities. Winn, Wetherholt, Fermín and the rest of the defense must convert them.Take Advantage of Scoring OpportunitiesThe Cardinals had chances to make Saturday interesting before the ninth inning. Against Rodriguez, they may not receive many. The first opportunity could be the best one.Game Day OutlookThe pitching matchup favors Arizona on paper.Rodriguez has been one of the National League’s better starters, and the Cardinals will have to solve a quality left-hander while playing without the platoon advantages they might prefer.But Sunday is not played on paper.Pallante has won 10 games because he competes, keeps his team within reach and provides the Cardinals an opportunity to win nearly every time he takes the mound.If he controls the strike zone and St. Louis can scratch out three or four runs against Rodriguez, this becomes the kind of game the Cardinals’ bullpen can finish.The goal entering the weekend was to win the series.That opportunity remains directly in front of them.Final ThoughtsThe Cardinals have already shown both sides of themselves in Arizona.Friday, they absorbed a late punch and answered in the ninth inning.Saturday, they made mistakes, fell behind early and could not complete the comeback.Sunday will tell us how they respond.A victory sends the Cardinals to Anaheim with a winning start to the second half and creates more separation from a direct Wild Card competitor.A loss allows Arizona to move within a half-game and leaves St. Louis having missed an opportunity after winning the opener.The series is tied.The matchup is difficult.The stakes are clear.It is time to settle the Desert Storm. Desert Storm Finale: Cardinals, Diamondbacks Settle Series Sunday

May’s Market Value Takes a HitThe Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurDustin May still has trade value.That is the first thing that needs to be said before the panic button gets smashed through the table.Starting pitching is always in demand in July. Teams chasing October need innings. They need arms. They need options. And May, even with all the inconsistency, still has the kind of stuff that will make contenders at least pick up the phone.But after Saturday’s rough outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks, there is no serious way to argue that May’s trade value is where it was a month ago.It is not.May struggled badly in the Cardinals’ 5-3 loss at Chase Field, lasting five innings while allowing eight hits, five earned runs and four walks. He struck out six, but needed 98 pitches to get through those five innings. The line told the story. The command was not sharp, the efficiency was not there, and Arizona made him work almost from the beginning.For a pitcher whose trade case was built around upside, health, and the possibility that he could turn into a difference-maker for a contender, this was not the kind of start that helps the Cardinals at the negotiating table.May’s market probably peaked on June 15.That night, he looked like the version of Dustin May every team dreams on. He threw a one-hit complete-game shutout against the San Diego Padres, carried dominant stuff deep into the game, gave the bullpen a night off, and reminded everyone why the Cardinals took a chance on him in the first place.That outing changed the conversation.Saturday changed it again.Since that complete-game shutout, May has not been able to hold that same level. There have been physical interruptions, including back tightness and the ankle issue from the comebacker before the All-Star break. There have also been continued questions about command, efficiency and whether he can consistently give a contender the kind of length it would need in September and October.That is where the problem begins.May is not being evaluated only as a talented arm. He is being evaluated as a deadline acquisition. That means every scout in the building is asking a different question.Can he help us win a playoff game?That is a much harder question to answer today than it was after the San Diego shutout.The raw ability is still there. May can still miss bats. He can still flash dominant stuff. He can still look, for a night, like a pitcher who could change the shape of a short series.But the market is not built on best-case dreams alone. It is built on risk.And May comes with risk.He is on a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2027, which means most clubs will treat him as a short-term rental. He also carries a well-known injury history, including two Tommy John surgeries and other physical setbacks that have shaped his career. Add in the uneven performance, and the Cardinals are no longer selling a frontline answer. They are selling a talented, volatile arm with upside and warning labels.That does not mean the Cardinals cannot move him.It means they should not expect a premium prospect package if May is the centerpiece.There is a difference.A month ago, after the complete-game shutout, it was easier to imagine a contender talking itself into May as more than just a rental starter. Maybe he could be a postseason weapon. Maybe the Cardinals could ask for a stronger return because the ceiling was so obvious.Now, the conversation shifts.May looks more like a standard rental starter with upside — the kind of pitcher a contender might add to deepen a rotation, protect innings, or take a chance on the stuff playing up in a new environment. That still has value, especially in a market where almost every buyer needs pitching.But it is not the same as selling certainty.The Cardinals’ leverage is also complicated by their own place in the standings. If they were buried, moving May would be simple. Cash in what you can and move on. But St. Louis is still hanging around the National League Wild Card race, which makes the decision more difficult.Trading May might still be the right baseball move if the front office believes this season is more about building the next serious contender than chasing the final Wild Card spot. But if they move him now, they need to understand the return may not match what it could have been at his peak.That is the hard part.The Cardinals may have missed their best window to cash in big.If Chaim Bloom is looking for premium minor-league talent, May alone probably does not get him there anymore. To land that kind of return, the Cardinals would likely have to discuss controllable assets — the kind of players contenders value more because they are not just two-month rentals.That is a much bigger conversation.Someone like Riley O’Brien, for example, would bring a very different market because he is controllable, productive, and affordable. That does not mean the Cardinals should move him. It means the return would be in a different category. Buyers pay for control. They pay for certainty. They pay for late-inning weapons they can keep.May no longer offers much of that.What he offers is still useful.He offers stuff. He offers experience. He offers a chance that a contender can catch lightning in a bottle for two months. He offers the memory of what he looked like against San Diego, when he went the distance and gave the Cardinals one of their best pitching performances of the season.But Saturday in Arizona reminded everyone of the other side of the ledger.The command can disappear. The pitch count can climb. The innings can get messy. The health history never fully leaves the room.That is what scouts saw.That is what front offices will weigh.The Cardinals can still trade Dustin May. There will still be interest because starting pitching does not sit on the shelf very long in July. But after another shaky outing, the return is probably moving closer to the middle of the market than the top.May’s value has not vanished.But it has taken a hit.And with the trade deadline approaching, timing matters.For the Cardinals, the question is no longer whether May has value. He does.The question is whether they waited too long to get the best of it. Cardinals Come Up Short in Arizona The Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals opened the second half Friday night with a gritty road win in Arizona.They could not back it up Saturday, coming up short as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cardinals 5-3 at Chase Field, evening the three-game series and handing St. Louis a frustrating loss in a matchup that carried real National League Wild Card weight.This was not one of those games where the Cardinals were buried from the first pitch. They had chances. They stayed close enough to make the Diamondbacks work. But Arizona did the early damage, protected the lead, and forced St. Louis to play from behind most of the afternoon.That was the difference.Dustin May got the start for the Cardinals, coming off one of the best outings of his season after throwing a complete-game shutout against the Padres before the All-Star break. Saturday, however, did not follow the same script.May had moments where his stuff played, but the Diamondbacks made him work. Arizona scratched across a run, then put together the bigger swing of the game with a three-run inning that gave the Cardinals a hole they spent the rest of the afternoon trying to escape.Against a team like Arizona, especially on the road, those middle innings matter. Give the Diamondbacks extra traffic and they can turn a tight game into a chase in a hurry.That is what happened Saturday.The Cardinals’ offense did not go quietly, but it also did not do enough early. Brandon Pfaadt kept St. Louis from landing the kind of big swing that could have changed the game. The Cardinals had baserunners, had traffic, and had chances to apply pressure, but Arizona’s pitching staff kept making the pitches it needed.The result was familiar enough to sting: not enough damage with men on base.The Cardinals did push across three runs and made Arizona finish the game, but the comeback never fully arrived. St. Louis needed one more big swing, one more extended inning, one more crooked number. Instead, the Diamondbacks were able to protect the lead they built early and turn the game over to the back end of their bullpen.The loss does not erase Friday night’s win, but it does put the Cardinals back in position where Sunday matters. A series win was there for the taking after the opener. Now, St. Louis will need to win the finale to leave Phoenix with the series.That matters.These are not throwaway games. The Cardinals and Diamondbacks are both sitting in the same crowded National League postseason picture, and head-to-head games in July can carry weight later in the summer. Friday night helped St. Louis. Saturday gave one back.The Cardinals still showed some fight. That has been part of the identity of this club. They do not fold easily, and they did not roll over in this one. But fight alone does not erase early damage, and it does not replace timely hitting.Arizona did enough early.St. Louis did not do enough late.That is the ballgame in a series that matters because both clubs are fighting in the same National League traffic. Friday’s win was important, but Saturday’s loss means the Cardinals will need Sunday’s finale to leave Arizona with the series.Sunday Becomes the Swing GameThe Cardinals still have a chance to take the series, but now they have to win the finale. After splitting the first two games, Sunday becomes the difference between a strong road series and a missed opportunity.The bottom line is that the Cardinals did not get buried, but they did get beat.Arizona built the lead early, Brandon Pfaadt kept St. Louis from breaking through, and the Cardinals’ late push came up short.The series is even.Diamondbacks 5, Cardinals 3.Now the Cardinals need the finale to take the series. Cardinals Come Up Short in Arizona

The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day: Brayden Smith St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurBrayden Smith gave Palm Beach the offensive spark it needed Saturday night.Smith is the Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day after going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in the Cardinals’ 7-4 win over St. Lucie at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.His final line: 3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 RThat is a strong night from the middle of the lineup, and it came in a game Palm Beach needed to have.The Cardinals entered the night chasing Daytona in the Florida State League East second-half race, and Smith helped make sure they stayed right on the Tortugas’ heels. With the win, Palm Beach improved to 13-9 in the second half, sitting just a half-game back of first place.Smith’s home run was his eighth of the season, and it was part of a productive night where he reached three times, drove in two runs and scored twice. He lifted his average to .251 and his OPS to .794, giving Palm Beach another important bat in a lineup trying to keep pace down the stretch.The Cardinals jumped out quickly with three runs in the first inning, then added another in the third and three more in the fourth. That early pressure gave the pitching staff room to work, and Smith was right in the middle of the attack.He was not alone.Sebastian Dos Santos also homered, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Ryan Weingartner singled, walked and stole his 28th base. Yordalin Peña doubled, and Alex Birge reached base twice with a hit and a walk.But Smith gets the headline because his bat delivered the best overall offensive performance of the night.There is something valuable about a hitter who can change the game without needing five plate appearances to do it. Smith collected three hits, left the yard, drove in runs and helped Palm Beach build the kind of lead it could protect.That matters even more in July, when the standings start becoming part of the development story.At Low-A, the goal is still player growth. That does not change. But when a club is sitting a half-game out of first place in the second half, these performances carry a little extra weight. Young players get a chance to learn how to produce when the games matter, and Smith did exactly that Saturday night.Palm Beach got strong length from Andrew Dutkanych IV out of the bullpen, and Nathan Shinn helped finish the game. But the offense set the tone early, and Smith helped lead the way.Three hits. A home run. Two RBIs. Two runs scored. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Quinn Mathews&nbsp; St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurQuinn Mathews did his job Saturday night.Mathews is the Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day after giving Memphis six strong innings in the Redbirds’ 5-4, 10-inning loss to Iowa at AutoZone Park.His final line:6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 KThat is exactly the kind of start Memphis needed.Mathews held Iowa to one run over six innings, scattered three hits, walked just one batter and kept the game under control. He threw 86 pitches, 56 for strikes, and lowered his ERA to 3.39 with a 1.16 WHIP.This was not a dominant strikeout-heavy performance, but it was a steady, professional start. Mathews attacked the zone, limited traffic and gave Memphis a real chance to win. For a Triple-A starter, that is the assignment.The only run he allowed came in the sixth inning, and even then, he kept the damage limited. He did not let one run become three. He did not let the inning get away from him. He kept Memphis in the game and handed the ball off with the score tied.That matters.Brycen Mautz followed with two scoreless innings, and for most of the night, Memphis pitching had done enough. The game did not slip away until extra innings, when Iowa scored four runs in the top of the 10th. The Redbirds answered with three in the bottom half, but the comeback fell short.That final score should not take anything away from Mathews.He gave Memphis six innings of one-run baseball against a division opponent, and he did it with efficiency. He faced 21 batters, worked ahead often enough to stay out of trouble, and kept Iowa from building momentum.For the Cardinals organization, starts like this continue to matter. Mathews has been one of the more important arms to watch at Memphis, and outings like Saturday’s show why. He does not have to be perfect to be valuable. He has to give length, throw strikes, limit damage and give his club a chance.He did all of that.Memphis did get some late offense. Colton Ledbetter drove in two runs, while Nolan Gorman and Brody Moore each added an RBI. Leo Bernal had two hits, Ramon Mendoza tripled and walked twice, and Joshua Báez walked twice and stole his 15th base.But the night’s best pitching performance belonged to Mathews.Six innings. One run. Three hits. One walk. The Cardinal Chronicle The Farm Report: The Good, The Bad &amp; The Ugly St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurSaturday was a split night across the Cardinals’ full-season affiliates, with Memphis and Peoria dropping games while Springfield and Palm Beach picked up wins.The system finished 2-2, but there were several strong individual performances worth noting.Quinn Mathews gave Memphis another quality start, Brayden Smith powered Palm Beach with a three-hit night, and Springfield stayed on top of the Texas League North second-half standings with a one-run win.Memphis Redbirds — Triple-A Overall Record: 55-40 Second Half: 8-12, tied for ninth in the International League West, 5.0 GB Streak: L1Iowa 5, Memphis 4 — 10 inningsMemphis had a chance to steal this one late, but Iowa scored four runs in the top of the 10th and held off a three-run answer from the Redbirds in the bottom half.The frustrating part is that Quinn Mathews gave Memphis every chance to win.Mathews worked six innings, allowing just one run on three hits, walking one and striking out four. He threw 86 pitches, 56 for strikes, and lowered his ERA to 3.39 with a 1.16 WHIP.Brycen Mautz followed with two scoreless innings, but things unraveled in extras. Victor Santos was charged with three runs, two earned, while walking four in 1.1 innings. Durbin Feltman allowed two hits and a run while recording the final two outs of the 10th.Offensively, Memphis managed only six hits. Leo Bernal went 2-for-5, while Ramon Mendoza tripled, walked twice and scored. Colton Ledbetter drove in two runs, and Nolan Gorman and Brody Moore each added an RBI. Joshua Báez did not record a hit but walked twice and stole his 15th base.Takeaway: Mathews was strong again, and Memphis had a late response, but the four-run 10th was too much to overcome. The Redbirds remain in a rough second-half stretch despite still owning a strong overall record.Springfield Cardinals — Double-A Overall Record: 44-44 Second Half: 13-7, first in the Texas League North, 1.0 game ahead of Tulsa Streak: W1Springfield 4, Amarillo 3Springfield stayed in first place with a tight 4-3 win over Amarillo.The Cardinals finished with 13 hits, but only pushed across four runs. That was enough because the pitching staff delivered a strong night, striking out 14 while walking just one.Cooper Hjerpe opened with three innings, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Domenic Picone worked a scoreless inning, and Brandt Thompson handled the bulk of the night from there, giving Springfield 4.2 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts. Jack Findlay came in for the final out and struck out the only batter he faced.At the plate, Rainiel Rodriguez had one of the best nights in the lineup, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. By then, the deficit was already too large.Ian Petrutz continues to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. He raised his average to .361 and his OPS to .948, continuing one of the better offensive stretches in the Peoria lineup.Michael Dattalo also had a productive night, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Jalin Flores doubled, walked twice and drove in a run. Jack Gurevitch added his eighth double, and Luis Pino singled and stole his fifth base.The pitching staff had trouble keeping South Bend off the board. Jack Martinez allowed six runs, three earned, over four innings. Ty Van Dyke followed with four innings but gave up four more runs on six hits.Peoria allowed 10 runs on 12 hits.Takeaway: Petrutz continues to stand out, but Peoria was playing uphill all night. The Chiefs did make some noise late, but the early damage decided the game.Palm Beach Cardinals — Low-A Overall Record: 46-42 Second Half: 13-9, second in the Florida State League East, 0.5 GB Streak: W1Palm Beach 7, St. Lucie 4Palm Beach stayed right in the Florida State League East race with a 7-4 win over St. Lucie.Brayden Smith led the way and earned Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day honors, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. His homer was his eighth of the season, and it was the centerpiece of a strong offensive night for Palm Beach.Sebastian Dos Santos also homered, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Ryan Weingartner singled, walked and stole his 28th base. Yordalin Peña doubled, and Alex Birge reached base twice with a hit and a walk.The Cardinals jumped out with three runs in the first, added another in the third, and then pushed three more across in the fourth. That early offense gave the pitching staff enough room to work.Andrew Dutkanych IV was excellent in relief, throwing five innings and allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Nathan Shinn finished the final two innings, allowing one run and striking out two.Takeaway: Palm Beach did what it needed to do. Peoria fell behind early and could not dig out. Springfield stayed in first place with a strong pitching effort, and Palm Beach kept pressure on Daytona behind Brayden Smith’s big night.The standings matter now.Springfield remains in first place. Palm Beach is only a half-game out. Memphis is still strong overall but has work to do in the second half. Peoria remains five games back and needs to start stacking wins.The best signs from Saturday were clear: Mathews continues to look steady at Triple-A, Smith gave Palm Beach a needed spark, Rainiel Rodriguez stayed hot for Springfield, and Ian Petrutz continues to make noise in Peoria. Cardinals 5, Diamondbacks 4 McGreevy, Winn Leads the Cardinals Past the Diamondbacks The Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals opened the second half the way they needed to — with a hard-earned road win over a team chasing the same October ground.And Masyn Winn was right in the middle of all of it.Winn drove in three runs and saved at least two more with his glove Friday night at Chase Field, helping the Cardinals hold off the Arizona Diamondbacks, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game series in Phoenix.This was not a clean, comfortable win. Those apparently are stored in a warehouse somewhere and only brought out on special occasions.This was a Cardinals win.They jumped ahead early, gave some of it back, went ahead again, watched Arizona punch back late, and then found one more run in the ninth before Riley O’Brien finished it off.The Cardinals entered the night at 50-45, sitting right in the thick of the National League Wild Card race. Arizona, at 49-47, was chasing the same territory. That made this more than just the first game after the All-Star break. This was one of those head-to-head games that can matter a little more when the standings tighten in September.St. Louis did not waste much time getting started.In the top of the first, Iván Herrera reached on an error by Ketel Marte, Alec Burleson singled, and Jordan Walker walked to load the bases. Winn then stepped in and delivered the first big swing of the night, lining a two-run single to center field to score Herrera and Burleson.Just like that, the Cardinals had a 2-0 lead.Arizona answered in the second when Gabriel Moreno singled, Max Kepler reached on a bunt single, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Moreno. Tim Tawa tied the game an inning later with a solo home run to left, and the Diamondbacks had pulled even at 2-2.Michael McGreevy did not have his cleanest night, but he did what he has done so often this season: he competed, limited damage, and gave the Cardinals a chance to win.McGreevy worked 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out five and walking one. He gave up the solo homer to Tawa and had traffic at different points, but he kept the Diamondbacks from turning those chances into crooked numbers.That mattered.The biggest escape came in the fifth, when Ketel Marte reached on an infield single and Geraldo Perdomo walked with two outs. Corbin Carroll came to the plate with a chance to swing the game Arizona’s way, but McGreevy got him to ground out to second to end the threat.In the seventh, McGreevy struck out Nolan Arenado looking before Ildemaro Vargas tripled to deep center. Oliver Marmol went to George Soriano, and Soriano did exactly what the Cardinals needed. He got Tawa to ground out to shortstop, then struck out Marte to strand the runner at third.That was one of the quiet turning points of the game.The Cardinals had already taken the lead back in the fifth when JJ Wetherholt launched a solo home run to right-center field, his 14th of the season. Wetherholt has continued to give St. Louis a spark at the top of the order, and his homer put the Cardinals back in front, 3-2.That lead held until the eighth, when St. Louis added what looked like an important insurance run.Burleson walked, Lars Nootbaar singled, and a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Winn then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Burleson and giving the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.It was Winn’s third RBI of the night.But this was not just about the bat.Winn’s defense was every bit as important. He made multiple plays that kept Arizona from pushing runs across, including a key groundout in the seventh with a runner at third. In a one-run game, those plays are not background noise. They are the ballgame.Then came the bottom of the eighth.Luis Gastelum entered and immediately walked Perdomo. Carroll followed with a two-run homer to right field, tying the game at 4-4 and wiping away the Cardinals’ late lead in a hurry.It would have been easy for the Cardinals to fold there. Road game. Late tie. Momentum gone. Chase Field awake.Instead, they answered.José Fermín opened the ninth with an infield single. Jimmy Crooks walked, and Wetherholt followed with a single to center, loading the bases with nobody out. Arizona turned to Brandyn Garcia after Paul Sewald got into trouble, but Iván Herrera came through with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Fermín and putting St. Louis back in front, 5-4.It was not flashy.It was enough.Riley O’Brien came on in the ninth and closed the door, securing the win and giving the Cardinals exactly the kind of start they needed coming out of the break.This was the kind of win that does not fit neatly into one box.Wetherholt gave them power. McGreevy gave them length. Soriano gave them a huge bridge. Herrera delivered the final RBI. O’Brien finished it.But the night belonged to Winn.Three runs driven in. At least two runs saved with the glove. A reminder that his value is not always found in one column of the box score.The Cardinals beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4.And in a Wild Card race where every head-to-head win carries weight, this one mattered.The Bottom LineThe Cardinals opened the second half with a gritty road win.Masyn Winn drove in three runs and saved at least two more with his glove. The Cardinal Chronicle Rocco Watch: Cardinals Expected to Pay Up for Maniscalco St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals have already signed several important pieces from their 2026 draft class, but one of the most intriguing names on the board remains unsigned.Rocco Maniscalco.The Cardinals selected the Oxford, Alabama, shortstop with the 50th overall pick in the second round, a selection that carried an assigned slot value of $1,982,700. The number matters, because Maniscalco is not a typical second-round high school pick with limited leverage.He is 17 years old. He plays a premium position. He is a switch-hitter. He has a strong defensive profile. He has projection remaining in the bat. And if the Cardinals do not meet the price, he has a Mississippi State commitment waiting in Starkville.That is leverage.And that is why this negotiation was never likely to be a simple slot-value agreement.The Cardinal Chronicle expectation remains that Maniscalco’s eventual signing bonus lands somewhere between $2.5 million and $2.7 million. If that range holds, the Cardinals would be going roughly $520,000 to $720,000 over slot to get the deal finished.That sounds aggressive.It also sounds logical.The Cardinals did not take Maniscalco at No. 50 by accident. They knew the player. They knew the age. They knew the commitment. They knew the likely price range. High school shortstops with real defensive ability and physical projection do not normally come with discount tags, especially when the college alternative is an SEC program with the visibility and development appeal of Mississippi State.This has always looked less like a question of whether the Cardinals can sign Maniscalco and more like a question of where the final number lands.That distinction matters.There is a difference between a player being difficult to sign and a player being expensive to sign. Maniscalco appears to be the latter. The Cardinals may need to push past slot, but that is not the same as being caught off guard. In fact, the way St. Louis has handled other parts of the draft class suggests this was part of the broader plan.The Cardinals created flexibility with other selections. That is how the modern draft works. Clubs do not view each pick in isolation. They manage the entire bonus pool. Trevor Condon, the club’s first-round pick at No. 13, reportedly signed for $5.16 million, creating meaningful savings from his assigned slot value. Those kinds of savings are not accidental. They are tools.And Maniscalco is the kind of player those tools are designed to secure.There is plenty to like.Defensively, Maniscalco has a chance to remain at shortstop. That alone gives him value. The Cardinals have spent years trying to build more athleticism, range and defensive stability into the system, and a true shortstop with a strong arm fits that direction. MLB Pipeline gives his arm a 65 grade and his fielding a 60, which tells the story plainly enough. The glove is not some distant dream. It is a real part of the profile.That is important because the bat does not need to carry the entire evaluation from day one.Maniscalco is not being drafted as a bat-only prep hitter who has to mash his way through the system. He brings defensive value, youth, projection and positional scarcity. That gives the Cardinals more than one path to a successful pick.The bat is where the development work begins.As a switch-hitter, Maniscalco gives the organization something to work with from both sides of the plate. The power is more projection than finished product, but that is normal for a 17-year-old who is still growing into his frame. At 6-foot-2 and 192 pounds, there is room for added strength, and with it, the possibility that average or better power becomes part of the profile.The hit tool will determine the ceiling.That is usually the case with young shortstops. The glove can get him on the field. The arm can keep him at the position. The athleticism can carry him through early development. But the bat will decide whether he becomes an organizational depth piece, a top prospect, or something more.That is why the Cardinals would be paying for upside.Maniscalco is not a polished college performer. That can be uncomfortable for fans who want immediate results, but it is exactly how organizations build impact talent.Premium athletes at premium positions cost money.That is the bottom line.If Maniscalco signs in the projected $2.5 million to $2.7 million range, the Cardinals would be making a clear statement about how they viewed him internally. They would not simply be paying second-round money. They would be treating him like a player who was too talented to let reach campus.That is the right way to look at it.Mississippi State is not a small obstacle. An SEC commitment gives a player real negotiating strength. He can go to school, develop in front of large crowds, face quality competition, and re-enter the draft later with a chance to improve his stock. That option is not theoretical. But Maniscalco may end up being one of the swing pieces that defines how aggressive this class really was.If he signs over slot, the Cardinals will have turned draft-pool savings into a young shortstop with real upside.That is good draft strategy.There is still work to do, and until the agreement is official, there is always some risk. But this remains a situation that feels much more like “how much” than “whether.”So unless negotiations take an unexpected turn, the expectation remains that Rocco Maniscalco begins his professional career in the Cardinals organization rather than heading to Starkville. The Cardinal Chronicle Yhoiker Fajardo Named Minor League Pitcher of the Day St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurYhoiker Fajardo did not turn in a spotless line Friday night, but he brought the kind of swing-and-miss stuff that changes a ballgame.The Peoria Chiefs right-hander struck out 10 batters over five innings in a 9-3 win over the South Bend Cubs at Four Winds Field. He allowed three runs on four hits, walked one and threw 55 of his 74 pitches for strikes.For that performance, Fajardo is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Pitcher of the Day.The third inning was the only real trouble spot for Fajardo, as South Bend pushed across all three of its runs in that frame. But rather than let the inning define his night, he kept attacking. That matters. Young pitchers are going to run into traffic. The separator is whether they can steady themselves, stay in the zone and keep giving their club a chance to win.Fajardo did exactly that.His 10 strikeouts set the tone for a Peoria pitching staff that dominated the rest of the way. Dylan Driessen, Nate Dohm, José Davila and Patrick Galle combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit while striking out five. By the end of the night, Chiefs pitchers had punched out 15 South Bend hitters.That is how a pitching staff takes control.Peoria’s offense gave Fajardo plenty of support, scoring in the first and second innings before breaking the game open with a six-run fourth. Ian Petrutz led the attack with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Anyelo Encarnación added two RBIs and stole his 10th base of the season, while Tai Peete, Jack Gurevitch and Cameron Nickens each drove in a run.But the backbone of the win was the mound work.Blake Aita made this a real decision after delivering six scoreless innings in relief for Springfield. That was a major outing after the Cardinals fell behind early, and it deserves strong mention. Brian Holiday also gave Palm Beach five solid innings, allowing two runs while striking out four.Still, Fajardo gets the nod.
