Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Tanner Franklin Fans Nine as Springfield Keeps Rolling

Tanner Franklin gave Springfield exactly what it needed Tuesday night.

The Cardinals were in a tight one at Corpus Christi, and Franklin made sure the game stayed within reach until the offense could do just enough.

Franklin, the MLB Pipeline No. 5 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, worked six innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and three walks while striking out nine in Springfield’s 3-2 win over the Hooks.

His final line: 6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K

That is a winning start.

Franklin missed bats all night, and while he had to work around three walks, he limited the damage and held Corpus Christi to three hits. Springfield scored once in the first inning and twice more in the fifth, and Franklin made that stand up.

He had help behind him.

Chen-Wei Lin, the MLB Pipeline No. 29 prospect, followed with three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out six. Together, Franklin and Lin held Corpus Christi to five hits and struck out 15.

The offense did its part behind them. Jesús Báez went 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base, while Josiah Ragsdale also homered and drove in a run.

But the game's tone came from Franklin.

Six innings.
Three hits allowed.
Nine strikeouts.
A one-run Springfield win.

That is a Pitcher of the Day performance.
