Blake Aita Named Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Week
St. Louis, MO

Blake Aita didn't overpower hitters with eye-popping strikeout totals this week. Instead, he did something every successful pitcher strives to do—he controlled the game.

For that reason, the Double-A Springfield right-hander is The Cardinal Chronicle's Minor League Pitcher of the Week.

Aita turned in six outstanding innings, allowing just three hits, one walk, and no runs while posting a 0.67 WHIP. He struck out three and never allowed the opposition to mount any sustained offense, pitching efficiently and keeping Springfield in complete control throughout his outing.

While strikeouts often steal the headlines, Aita's performance was a reminder that quick outs, weak contact, and limiting baserunners can be just as valuable. He worked ahead in counts, trusted his defense, and consistently executed his game plan.

The competition for this week's honor was a close one.

Quinn Mathews continued his outstanding season at Triple-A Memphis, allowing just one run over six innings while surrendering only three hits and one walk. The left-hander finished the week with a 1.50 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and four strikeouts, adding another quality outing to what has been an impressive second half of the season.

Also deserving recognition was Brandt Thompson, who pitched 4 2/3 innings for Double-A Springfield, allowing just one earned run while striking out six. Thompson finished the week with a 1.93 ERA and 0.86 WHIP, once again demonstrating his ability to miss bats while limiting hard contact.

All three pitchers gave their clubs an opportunity to win, but Aita's combination of six scoreless innings, outstanding command, and exceptional efficiency earned him the edge this week.

As the Cardinals continue to evaluate their pitching depth throughout the organization, outings like this reinforce why Aita remains an intriguing arm to watch heading into the second half of the season.
