Bruce Zimmermann Named Pitcher of the Day
St. Louis, Mo. — By Ray Mileur
Veteran left-hander Bruce Zimmermann turned in one of the sharpest pitching performances in the Cardinals’ minor league system on Wednesday, earning The Cardinal Chronicle’s Pitcher of the Day honors.
Pitching for the Memphis Redbirds in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Indianapolis Indians, Zimmermann worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings in a 3-0 Memphis victory.
His line was as clean as it gets:
5 1/3 innings pitched
5 hits allowed
0 runs
0 walks
7 strikeouts
Zimmermann attacked hitters from the opening pitch, worked efficiently, and never gave Indianapolis room to breathe. Most impressive was his command — seven strikeouts without issuing a single walk — the kind of outing pitching coaches frame up as a teaching tape.
At 3-0 on the season, Zimmermann has become one of Memphis’ steadiest arms, giving the Redbirds exactly what every first-place club needs: dependable innings and a chance to win every time he takes the ball.
No drama. No wasted motion. Just professional baseball.
That’s why Bruce Zimmermann is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Pitcher of the Day.
