MiLB Player of the Day: Brycen Mautz Delivers His Best Outing of the Season
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
For a pitcher working to establish himself at the highest level of the minor leagues, sometimes the most important step is not dominance — it is control.
On Saturday night in Charlotte, Brycen Mautz showed both.
The Cardinals’ No. 21 prospect turned in his strongest outing of the young season, guiding the Memphis Redbirds to a 6-4 victory with a composed and efficient six-inning performance. Mautz allowed just three hits and one run — none of them earned — while striking out five and walking two.
It was not overpowering in the traditional sense.
It was better than that.
Mautz worked with purpose, leaning heavily on his slider — nearly 42 percent of his pitch mix — and generating consistent swing-and-miss against a Charlotte lineup that never seemed comfortable. The pitch produced eight whiffs and served as his primary weapon throughout the night, allowing him to control at-bats and stay ahead in the count.
More importantly, he stayed in control of the game.
That is the difference at the Triple-A level.
There were no extended innings, no unraveling moments, and no unnecessary traffic. When Charlotte threatened, Mautz answered. When he had an opportunity to put hitters away, he did just that. Over six innings, he kept the game moving in the direction Memphis needed.
It is the kind of outing that does not always grab headlines, but it earns trust — from coaches, from teammates, and from the organization.
And for a pitcher developing into a reliable option, that matters.
Mautz entered the season with expectations after being named the Cardinals’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and nights like this show why. The raw ability has never been in question. What separates performances like Saturday’s is the refinement — the ability to sequence, to execute, and to stay composed when the game requires it.
Memphis, now 11-3, continues to lead the International League West, and the rotation is beginning to take shape behind outings like this one.
There will be bigger strikeout games. There will be nights when the radar gun or the box score tells a louder story.
But this was a pitcher doing his job — and doing it well.
And on a full night across the Cardinals’ farm system, it was enough to make Brycen Mautz the Minor League Player of the Day.
