Cardinals Look to Reset Behind McGreevy as Roster Watch Continues

The St. Louis Cardinals return to American Family Field tonight looking for a cleaner response, a steadier start and, perhaps, one more bullpen answer before first pitch.

St. Louis and Milwaukee continue their three-game series at 6:40 p.m. CT, with right-hander Michael McGreevy scheduled to face Brewers left-hander Kyle Harrison. The game is set to air on Cards.TV and KMOX.

The Cardinals opened the series Monday with a 5-1 loss, a frustrating Memorial Day showing that left St. Louis still searching for traction against the first-place Brewers. Milwaukee entered the series holding the top spot in the NL Central, with the Cardinals trying to stay within striking distance in a division that once again looks like it may run through these two clubs.

For St. Louis, tonight is less about panic and more about response. This is still a club that has played better baseball over the last month, especially away from Busch Stadium. The Cardinals came into Milwaukee with one of the stronger road records in the National League, and if they are going to keep pressure on the Brewers, that road toughness needs to show up again tonight.

McGreevy gets the ball with a chance to stabilize the series. The right-hander enters at 3-3 with a 2.40 ERA, and the Cardinals could use length from him after a stretch that has included rainouts, roster churn and bullpen uncertainty. Milwaukee counters with Harrison, who brings a 5-1 record and 1.77 ERA into the matchup.

The roster watch remains part of the story. Ryan Fernandez is expected to be recalled by St. Louis, but as of this writing, that transaction has not been officially processed. That matters because the Cardinals have already optioned Brycen Mautz back to Memphis following his major league debut, and the bullpen picture still appears to be in motion.

Mautz’s debut was one of the few bright spots Monday. The left-hander got to the big leagues, took the mound, and put his name in the record book. That cannot be taken away from him. But with St. Louis still trying to sort out relief roles behind Riley O’Brien, JoJo Romero, Kyle Leahy and the rest of the late-inning group, Fernandez’s expected return would give Oliver Marmol another right-handed option.

Offensively, the Cardinals need to do more than wait for one big swing. The club has been at its best when it pressures opponents with baserunning, situational hitting and early traffic. That has been one of the more encouraging traits of this team — they have been aggressive without being reckless, taking extra bases at one of the best rates in the majors while avoiding unnecessary outs.

That matters in Milwaukee. The Brewers are not a club that gives away many games, especially at home. Against Harrison, St. Louis will need right-handed bats to set the tone, but the bigger issue is approach. The Cardinals cannot let Harrison settle into a rhythm, work quick innings and turn the game over to Milwaukee’s bullpen with a lead.

This is also the kind of game where the Cardinals need their young core to keep carrying weight. Jordan Walker, JJ Wetherholt, Masyn Winn, Iván Herrera and Victor Scott II have all been central to the club’s 2026 identity. The Cardinals are not built like a finished veteran machine. They are built more like a team learning how to win while it is already expected to win. That makes nights like this important.

The standings do not hand out trophies in May, but divisional games in May still count the same in September. The Cardinals do not need a statement speech. They need a clean start from McGreevy, sharper at-bats against Harrison and, if the roster move comes through, a bullpen that looks a little more settled than it did 24 hours ago.

Old-school baseball math still applies: win tonight, and yesterday becomes just yesterday.
