Game Day Preview: Cardinals Open Interleague Series Against Cleveland
St. Louis, MO — By Ray Mileur
The St. Louis Cardinals at home in Busch Stadium tonight looking to get back on steady footing as they open a three-game interleague series against the Cleveland Guardians. St. Louis enters the night at 8-7, while Cleveland arrives at 9-7 and sitting atop the American League Central. First pitch is set for 6:45 p.m. Central.
The pitching matchup gives this one some early shape.
For the Cardinals, left-hander Matthew Liberatore gets the ball. Through his first work of the season, Liberatore carries a 3.38 ERA with 10 strikeouts. Across from him is Cleveland right-hander Gavin Williams, who has been sharp early, posting a 2.04 ERA with 25 strikeouts. On paper, that gives the Guardians a slight edge on the mound, and it puts a little extra pressure on the Cardinals’ lineup to do what it has done at its best this season — attack early and make a starter work.
This game also feels like a tone-setter for the series.
St. Louis is back home after Sunday’s 9-3 loss to Boston, a game in which the Cardinals managed just seven hits and never fully slowed the Red Sox offense. A clean start tonight would go a long way, especially against a Cleveland club that does a good job of applying pressure and turning games into a grind. The Cardinals do not need to make this one fancy. They need solid innings from Liberatore, cleaner baseball behind him, and timely production from the middle of the order.
There is also a simple truth hanging over this matchup: the Cardinals have a chance to use this homestand to reestablish themselves. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives St. Louis a slight edge, but only a slight one. That sounds about right. This looks like the kind of game that will come down to bullpen execution, situational hitting, and whether the Cardinals can make Williams throw stressful innings instead of comfortable ones.
Key Players
Keep an eye on St. Louis slugger Jordan Walker, who leads the team with seven home run. Maysn Winn is back in the lineup, after being hit by a pitch and missing a couple of games over the weekend.
Today's Transactions
04/13/26 - St. Louis Cardinals designated LHP Jared Shuster for assignment.

What to Watch For Tonight
Liberatore’s command, how the Cardinals handle Williams early in counts, and whether St. Louis can strike first and make Cleveland play from behind. Whoever gets the early lead, has the big edge tonight.
Walker's World
Jordan Walker leads Major League Baseball in Home Runs (7), Total Bases (41), and Isolated Power (.418), while ranking among MLB leaders in Average Exit Velocity (97.1mph, 2nd), Hard-Hit % (68.4, 3rd), Barrels/PA % (16.4%, 3rd), Slugging (.745, 3rd), OPS (1.039, 4th), and bWAR (1.4, T-3rd).
Walker is slashing .406/.457/.969 (13-32) with six home runs and a 1.426 OPS over his current eight-game hitting streak.
The old-school view?
This has the feel of a good, honest Monday-night ballgame. No gimmicks. Just a club trying to protect home field and get a series started right.
