The St. Louis Cardinals have officially signed one of the most important players from their 2026 draft class.

Shortstop Rocco Maniscalco, selected with the 50th overall pick in the second round of the MLB Draft, has agreed to an over-slot signing bonus of $3.2 million and is expected to begin his professional career this week at the Cardinals’ complex in Jupiter, Florida.

That $3.2 million bonus says plenty about how highly the Cardinals value the 17-year-old Alabama high school standout.

St. Louis did not simply sign its second-round selection. The organization paid Maniscalco like a first-round talent.

Maniscalco was viewed by some evaluators as a potential first-round pick entering the draft, making his availability at No. 50 one of the more intriguing developments of the Cardinals’ draft. His combination of youth, athleticism, defensive ability and offensive upside made him one of the organization’s priority signings.

The Cardinals understood that signing him would not come cheaply.

Maniscalco had a strong college commitment to Mississippi State, where his father, Matthew Maniscalco, was a standout shortstop before beginning his own professional baseball career. Because Rocco reclassified and entered the draft at only 17 years old, he also carried additional leverage.

Had he chosen to attend Mississippi State, he could have been eligible for the draft again after two college seasons rather than waiting the traditional three years.

That possibility, combined with his talent and projection, gave Maniscalco and his representatives considerable negotiating power.

The Cardinals ultimately made certain that college would not be the next stop in his baseball career.

By committing $3.2 million, St. Louis demonstrated that Maniscalco was not merely another name on its draft board. He was a player the organization believed was worth making a significant financial investment to secure.

The signing also reflects the planning that goes into managing a draft bonus pool. Teams frequently sign some selections below their assigned slot value to create additional spending room for premium players later in the draft.

The Cardinals appeared to have Maniscalco circled as one of those premium targets.

He now joins an organization that continues to place a greater emphasis on athleticism, defensive versatility and long-term upside throughout its minor league system.

Maniscalco is expected to remain at shortstop as he begins his professional career. He has the arm strength, range and instincts necessary to receive every opportunity to stay at the position, although his age leaves plenty of physical development still ahead.

Offensively, the Cardinals are betting on his bat speed, approach and developing power. Like most teenage draft picks, he will require patience, but his ceiling made him worth the investment.

The road from an Alabama high school field to Busch Stadium is a long one, and there are no guarantees attached to even a $3.2 million signing bonus.

Still, the Cardinals have secured one of the most talented players in their draft class—and perhaps one of the best values available after the first round.

Now the real work begins.

Maniscalco will report to Jupiter, trade his high school uniform for a Cardinals jersey and begin the daily grind of professional baseball.

A major piece of the Cardinals’ 2026 draft class is officially in the fold.
