Cardinals Acquire Versatile Prospect Brayden Smith in Deal with Orioles
St. Louis, MO

The St. Louis Cardinals made a quiet but telling roster move Monday night, acquiring versatile infielder/outfielder Brayden Smith from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for left-handed reliever Nick Raquet.

This isn’t a headline-grabbing deal — but it’s the kind of move that fits exactly into what the Cardinals are trying to build in 2026: athleticism, flexibility, and long-term upside.

A Toolsy Addition to the System
Smith, a 13th-round pick in 2025 out of Oklahoma State, arrives as a classic Cardinals-type prospect — athletic, adaptable, and still developing.

Primarily a second baseman, Smith brings defensive versatility with experience in both center and left field. That kind of positional flexibility plays well in today’s game — and even better in this organization.

He’s also got wheels. Smith is considered a plus runner, capable of impacting the game on the bases and covering ground defensively.

At the plate, he profiles as a gap-to-gap hitter with a smooth, controlled swing. During his junior season at Oklahoma State, he posted a .304 average with 11 home runs and 16 doubles — showing a blend of contact ability with emerging pop.

Early Pro Career Still Finding Its Footing
Smith’s professional numbers haven’t caught up to the tools just yet.

He hit .200 over 16 games at Single-A Delmarva in 2025 and had just broken camp with High-A Frederick to begin the 2026 season before the trade.

That’s important context — this is a developmental acquisition, not a finished product.

The Cardinals are betting on what he can become, not what he is today.

Orioles Add Immediate Bullpen Help
In return, Baltimore gets a ready-now arm in Nick Raquet.

The 30-year-old left-hander has carved out a professional career through persistence, highlighted by being named co-Pitcher of the Year in the Atlantic League in 2023 before joining the Cardinals organization.

Raquet gives the Orioles something they value right now — left-handed relief depth with experience.

My old school take is this is a classic baseball trade.

Baltimore gets help for today.
St. Louis invests in tomorrow.

No noise. No hype. Just two organizations addressing different needs.

And if you’ve followed this club long enough, you know this kind of move has a way of quietly paying off down the road.
