Cards Designate Zak Kent for Assignment

Ramon Urías Added to 40-Man

The St. Louis Cardinals have designated right-hander Zak Kent for assignment, the club announced, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Ramón Urías.

Kent’s tenure in St. Louis has been brief — and busy.

The Cardinals originally claimed Kent off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians in December. After roughly a month in the organization, he was designated for assignment when the club added left-hander Justin Bruihl. The Texas Rangers then claimed Kent, but he once again found himself squeezed off a roster spot following their signing of Jordan Montgomery.

St. Louis re-claimed Kent earlier this week, but his return lasted just five days before another roster crunch forced the club’s hand.

In total, Kent has been claimed multiple times this offseason, illustrating the tightrope walk many fringe 40-man players face this time of year. Organizations value depth, but roster flexibility is often king — especially as clubs finalize their plans heading into spring competition.

The move formally opens a roster spot for Ramón Urías, whose addition signals the Cardinals’ intent to solidify their infield depth and add major league experience to the roster.

For Kent, the process now begins again. He can be claimed by another club, traded, or outrighted if he clears waivers. Given the way his offseason has unfolded, it would surprise no one if another opportunity presents itself quickly.

Sometimes baseball isn’t about performance — it’s about paperwork, timing, and space on a 40-man roster.

And right now, space won.
