Cardinals Trim Camp Roster as Báez Headlines Latest Moves

Spring roster shuffle sends several arms to the minors while Joshua Báez continues to generate buzz

The St. Louis Cardinals made another round of spring roster moves Monday as camp begins to narrow toward Opening Day decisions. The club reduced its spring roster to 46 players, with the headline move involving one of the most talked-about players in camp.

Joshua Báez, one of the sensations of the spring, was optioned to Class AAA Memphis despite hitting three home runs in three consecutive games. While the move might appear surprising on the surface, it reflects the club’s long-term development plan rather than any lack of confidence in the 22-year-old outfielder. Báez’s power surge and improved approach at the plate have been among the most encouraging developments of camp, and his assignment to Memphis positions him just one strong stretch away from forcing the Cardinals’ hand later this season.

Several young pitchers were also optioned as the organization begins sorting through its deep inventory of arms. Left-hander Cooper Hjerpe, left-hander Brycen Mautz, and left-hander Nick Raquet were all optioned to minor-league assignments, where they will continue their development and prepare to provide depth during the long season ahead.

In addition, top pitching prospect Quinn Mathews was reassigned to minor-league camp. Mathews remains one of the organization’s most intriguing young starters and is expected to continue building innings before potentially impacting the major-league staff later in the year.

With camp now down to 46 players, the Cardinals’ spring roster will continue to tighten over the next several weeks as the club moves closer to finalizing its Opening Day roster.

For Báez, the message from this round of moves is clear: the opportunity is coming. The Cardinals simply want to make sure that when it arrives, he’s fully ready to seize it.
