SPRINGFIELD — The line will show a loss.

The outing told a different story.

Braden Davis turned in one of the sharper pitching performances in the system on Wednesday, striking out eight batters over five innings for the Springfield Cardinals in a 7-1 loss to Midland at Hammons Field.

The right-hander had swing-and-miss stuff working from the start, consistently getting ahead in counts and finishing hitters when he needed to. The strikeout total wasn’t a fluke—it was the result of command, sequencing, and the kind of stuff that plays at any level.

But like a lot of young pitchers learn, dominance doesn’t always show up in the win column.

Springfield’s offense managed just one run, leaving Davis with little margin for error. Midland capitalized on its opportunities, while Springfield never found a rhythm at the plate.

For Davis, though, the outing still checks important boxes.

Strikeouts matter. Missing bats matters. And doing it over multiple innings, while maintaining composure, matters even more. It’s the kind of performance that development staffs look at and say, “That plays.”

The early-season numbers may not reflect it yet, but outings like this are part of the process—proof that the foundation is there.

For a young arm trying to climb the ladder, there’s a difference between getting through an outing and owning it.

On Wednesday, despite the result, Davis owned it and our MiLB 'Pitcher of the Day' honors.
