Farm Report: Gorman Homers, Peoria over Beloit, Palm Beach Stays Hot,

The Cardinals’ full-season minor league affiliates went 2-1 in completed games Thursday, with Peoria and Palm Beach picking up wins, Memphis falling at Jacksonville and Springfield postponed by weather.

Peoria had the cleanest win of the night, shutting out Beloit 2-0 behind a combined two-hitter from Nate Dohm, Victor Santos and Ty Van Dyke. Palm Beach kept rolling in the Florida State League, beating Bradenton 8-5 behind two home runs from Trevor Haskins and a strong offensive night from Ian Petrutz.

Memphis lost 10-4 at Jacksonville despite three home runs, including Nolan Gorman’s first Triple-A homer of the season. Springfield’s game against Northwest Arkansas was postponed because of severe weather and potential flooding in the Springfield area.

It was a night led by pitching in Peoria and power in Palm Beach.

Memphis Redbirds
Record: 48-30 overall, International League West
Second Half: 1-2
Standings: 3rd place, International League West; 2026 International League First Half Champions
Result: Jacksonville 10, Memphis 4

Memphis hit three home runs Thursday night, but it was not enough.

The Redbirds fell 10-4 to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp at VyStar Ballpark, dropping their second straight game to open the road series after winning Tuesday’s second-half opener.

Jacksonville took control early, scoring two runs in the first inning and another in the second to put Memphis in a 3-0 hole. The Redbirds got one run back in the third when Colton Ledbetter singled, Jeremy Rivas reached on a fielder’s choice with Ledbetter moving to third on an error, and Victor Scott II walked to load the bases.

César Prieto then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Ledbetter and cut the deficit to 3-1.

That was as close as Memphis would get.

Jacksonville broke the game open with six runs in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to stretch the lead to 10-1.

The Redbirds answered with some power late.

Bligh Madris hit his 11th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Later in the same frame, Jeremy Rivas launched his first career Triple-A home run. Nolan Gorman added a solo home run in the eighth, his first with Memphis this season.

That gave Memphis three solo homers on the night.

Gorman, Madris and Rivas supplied the power, but the Redbirds finished with only six hits and never mounted the kind of sustained rally needed to overcome Jacksonville’s big middle innings.

Jared Shuster made a spot start in place of scheduled starter Brycen Mautz and took the loss. Shuster worked three innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out four.

Luis Gastelum threw a scoreless inning in relief and struck out two. Ryan Murphy and Austin Love also added scoreless appearances.

There were some positive notes.

Rivas hit his first Triple-A home run.

Gorman got on the board with Memphis.

Madris continued to show power.

But Jacksonville’s six-run fifth inning decided the night.

Springfield Cardinals
Record: 32-38 overall, Texas League North
Second Half: 1-1
Standings: Texas League North
Result: Postponed vs. Northwest Arkansas

Springfield did not play Thursday night.

The Cardinals’ game against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals at Route 66 Stadium was postponed because of inclement weather, with severe storms and potential flooding in the Springfield area.

The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader Friday.

Game one is scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m., with gates opening at 3:45 p.m. Game two will begin no earlier than 7:05 p.m.

Both games are scheduled for seven innings.

Springfield entered Thursday coming off a 7-1 win over Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday night, when the Cardinals hit four home runs and Braden Davis delivered one of his best starts of the season.

The Cardinals will now try to carry that momentum into a Friday doubleheader.

Peoria Chiefs
Record: 35-36 overall, Midwest League West
Second Half: 3-2
Standings: Midwest League West
Result: Peoria 2, Beloit 0

Peoria won this one the old-fashioned way.

Pitching.

The Chiefs beat the Beloit Sky Carp 2-0 on Thursday night at ABC Supply Stadium, using a combined two-hit shutout from Nate Dohm, Victor Santos and Ty Van Dyke.

Dohm opened the game with three scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out four. Victor Santos followed with a scoreless fourth inning.

Then Ty Van Dyke took the ball and finished it.

Van Dyke threw five hitless innings, working around three walks while striking out five. He carried Peoria through the final five frames and earned his second High-A win.

That was the difference in the game.

Peoria did not need much offense because the pitching staff gave Beloit nothing.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Luis Pino scored on a sacrifice fly from Sammy Hernandez.

In the fifth, Jose Cordoba doubled with one out, and Jack Gurevitch followed with an RBI single to center field to make it 2-0.

That was enough.

Peoria finished with five hits. Cordoba doubled and scored. Gurevitch singled and drove in a run. Pino singled, walked and scored. Cameron Nickens singled and walked.

The Chiefs also used their legs, with Nickens, Gurevitch and Hernandez each stealing a base.

But this game belonged to the pitching staff.

Two hits allowed.

No runs.

Nine combined strikeouts.

That is how you win on the road.

Palm Beach Cardinals
Record: 38-34 overall, Florida State League East
Second Half: 5-1
Standings: 1st place, Florida State League East
Result: Palm Beach 8, Bradenton 5

Palm Beach stayed hot Thursday night.

The Cardinals beat the Bradenton Marauders 8-5 at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, improving to 5-1 in the second half and 9-0 against Bradenton this season.

Bradenton scored first on a solo home run by Eddie Rynders in the second inning, but Palm Beach answered immediately.

Ian Petrutz tied the game in the bottom half with a solo home run to center field, his second homer of his rehab assignment with Palm Beach.

Bradenton moved back in front 2-1 in the third, but Palm Beach responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan Weingartner doubled home the tying run. A balk brought in another run to give Palm Beach the lead. Yordalin Peña added an RBI double, and Petrutz followed with another RBI double to make it 5-2.

The Cardinals kept adding on.

Trevor Haskins hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his fifth of the season, to stretch the lead to 6-2. In the sixth, Chase Heath singled, stole second, advanced to third and scored on a Heriberto Caraballo single.

Bradenton made it interesting late, scoring in the seventh and adding two more in the eighth to cut Palm Beach’s lead to 7-5.

Haskins answered with his second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth, giving Palm Beach an insurance run and pushing the lead back to three.

Dylan Driessen recorded the final four outs for his third save, striking out two.

Jack Martinez started for Palm Beach and struck out seven over 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Jesús García earned the win out of the bullpen, allowing one run over 2.2 innings.

Palm Beach’s offense finished with 11 hits.

Haskins homered twice. Petrutz went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Caraballo had three singles and an RBI. Heath went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.

That is a lineup carrying momentum into the weekend.

Player of the Day
Trevor Haskins, Palm Beach Cardinals

Trevor Haskins is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Player of the Day after hitting two home runs in Palm Beach’s 8-5 win over Bradenton.

Both home runs mattered.

His first came in the fourth inning and pushed Palm Beach’s lead to 6-2. His second came in the eighth after Bradenton had trimmed the Cardinals’ lead to 7-5. That swing gave Palm Beach some breathing room and helped close out another win over the Marauders.

Haskins finished with two solo home runs, giving him five on the season.

Ian Petrutz deserves strong mention after going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs for Palm Beach. Jeremy Rivas also deserves mention after hitting his first career Triple-A home run for Memphis. Nolan Gorman and Bligh Madris also homered for the Redbirds.

But Haskins had the best power night in the system.

Two home runs.

A late insurance blast.

A Palm Beach win.

That earns the honor.

Pitcher of the Day
Ty Van Dyke, Peoria Chiefs

Ty Van Dyke is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Pitcher of the Day after throwing five hitless innings in Peoria’s 2-0 win over Beloit.

Van Dyke entered after Nate Dohm and Victor Santos had already started the shutout, then carried it the rest of the way.

He worked five innings, did not allow a hit, walked three and struck out five. That is a strong long-relief line in any setting, but it mattered even more in a tight 2-0 game on the road.

Peoria did not have much margin for error.

Van Dyke gave Beloit none.

Nate Dohm deserves strong mention after opening the game with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts. Jack Martinez also deserves mention after striking out seven over 3.2 innings for Palm Beach.

But Van Dyke finished the shutout.

Five hitless innings.

Five strikeouts.

A road win.

That gets the nod.

Old School Take

Peoria gave us the cleanest baseball of the night.

Two runs is not much.

But when your pitching staff gives up two hits and throws a shutout, two runs are enough.

Nate Dohm started it.

Victor Santos bridged it.

Ty Van Dyke finished it.

That is how a pitching staff wins a game.

Palm Beach kept rolling, too. The Cardinals are 5-1 in the second half and still have not lost to Bradenton this season. That lineup has started the second half with some real bite.

Memphis had the power, but not the pitching.

Springfield had the weather.

Peoria had the best win.

That is the Farm Report.
