Game Day Preview
St. Louis, MO — By Ray Mileur

St. Louis Cardinals, (8–8) vs. Cleveland Guardians, (10-7)
Tuesday, April 14 | Busch Stadium | 6:45 PM CT

RHP Michael McGreevy (1–1, 2.16 ERA) vs LHP Joey Cantillo (1–0, 2.45 ERA)

The Cardinals return to Busch tonight looking to stop a three-game slide after a 9–3 loss Monday night. Outside of Jordan Walker’s bat, this offense has struggled to deliver in key moments—most notably going 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the series opener.

🔍 Inside the Game
Starting Pitching – A Warning Beneath the Surface

McGreevy’s traditional numbers look sharp—2.16 ERA, 0.78 WHIP—but the eeper metrics tell a different story. His expected ERA (xERA) sits between 5.60–7.80, raising concern about sustainability. Add in a 2.3 mph drop in fastball velocity (down to 90.7 mph), and suddenly the margin for error becomes razor thin.

He’s a pitch-to-contact arm. If location slips—even a little—big league hitters won’t miss.

Bullpen – No Margin for Mistakes

This is where things have quietly unraveled with a K Rate: 16.9% (30th in MLB) and ERA: 5.26 (bottom third of league). No swing-and-miss means everything is in play—and that’s a dangerous way to live late in games.

Names to watch:

Matt Svanson – 15.00 ERA early after a dominant 2025
Ryne Stanek – 6.35 ERA, still searching for rhythm
The late-inning collapse trend? It’s real—and it’s costing games.

 🔥 Offense Snapshot
Let’s not dance around it…

Outside of Jordan Walker, this offense has been stuck in neutral.

Walker: .333 AVG | 8 HR (MLB leader) | 46 TB
Team RISP struggles continue to stall rallies
He’s doing his job—and then some. The lineup around him? Needs to show up.

📈 Who’s Hot
Jordan Walker (RF) – Carrying the offense, period.
Alec Burleson (1B) – .271 AVG, .380 OBP, steady presence
Victor Scott II (CF) – Speed threat, .263 AVG, table-setter

📉 Who’s Cold
Masyn Winn (SS) – .154 AVG, searching for timing
Iván Herrera (DH) – .184 AVG, hasn’t found power stroke
Pedro Pagés (C) – .194 AVG, still adjusting to MLB pitching

🧭 How We Got Here
Last 3 Games: All Losses

April 13 vs CLE (L, 9–3) – Out-hit, outplayed late
April 12 vs BOS (L, 9–3) – Déjà vu, bullpen falters
April 11 vs BOS (L, 7–1) – Close game blown open late

Pattern? Games are breaking open in the 8th and 9th innings.

🧠 My The Old School Take
This isn’t complicated.

Pitchers have to finish innings
Hitters have to cash in opportunities
And somebody—anybody—has to take pressure off Walker
Right now, it’s one man carrying nine.

That won’t hold over 162.

🔑 Keys to the Game
1. Stop the Big Inning
Late-game meltdowns have defined this losing streak.

2. Get Traffic Early
Give McGreevy a lead. Let him pitch ahead—not from behind.

3. Make Walker Matter
Turn solo shots into crooked numbers.

4. Win One Before Houston
You don’t want to walk into that ballpark dragging a five-game skid.

📅 Coming Up
Wednesday (12:15 PM) vs CLE – Series finale
Friday @ HOU (7:10 PM) – Road trip begins
Saturday @ HOU (6:10 PM)
Sunday @ HOU (1:10 PM)

🧾 Final Thought
This is one of those early-season stretches that tells you who you are. Right now, the Cardinals are a team with one hot bat, a shaky bullpen, and not much margin for error.

Tonight’s not a must-win…
—but it’s the kind of game good teams don’t let slip.
