Game Day Preview: Cardinals @ Marlins
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
The St. Louis Cardinals return to action Sunday afternoon in Jupiter as they take on the Miami Marlins at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With roster cuts beginning to shape the final weeks of camp, every inning now carries a little more weight.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM ET / 12:10 PM CT on the visitor side of the Roger Dean complex.
Probable Pitchers
Cardinals: Andre Pallante (RHP) - Pallante takes the ball looking to strengthen his case for a role in what has quietly become a “show-me” rotation competition under the Cardinals’ revamped baseball operations structure.
In his first outing of the spring, Pallante worked two innings and struck out two while showing the heavy fastball that has long made him a ground-ball specialist. With several young arms waiting in the wings, each appearance this March becomes an opportunity to show he belongs in the conversation when the club heads north.
Marlins: Adam Mazur (RHP) - Mazur counters for Miami as the Marlins continue their own spring evaluation process.
What to Watch - The Roster Squeeze - Saturday’s moves sent top prospects Tink Hence and Leonardo Bernal to minor-league camp, trimming the spring roster to 51 players. As camp moves into its final stretch, the message becomes clearer: the journey to Opening Day is getting shorter for anyone not producing.
The Catcher Safety Net - With Ivan Herrera scratched Saturday due to knee inflammation, the spotlight turns to Pedro Pagés and Yohel Pozo behind the plate. Early reports suggest Herrera’s absence may only require 24–48 hours of rest, but if the discomfort lingers, an unexpected opportunity could open in the race for the backup catcher’s role.
The “Dirty Uniform” Watch - Spring Training is where effort gets noticed. Expect non-roster invitees to push the pace today as the organization’s renewed focus on fundamentals continues to take shape. With former Cardinal Kolten Wong scheduled to arrive as a guest instructor Monday, the old-school details of the game are about to receive a little extra attention around camp.
For players fighting for a roster spot, the message remains simple: play hard, play smart, and make it impossible for the staff to ignore your name.
