In the Spotlight: Colton Ledbetter
Memphis Redbirds
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
The Memphis Redbirds open the 2026 season with a roster full of depth, but one name worth circling early is 24-year-old outfielder Colton Ledbetter.
A left-handed hitter with a steady approach, Ledbetter is coming off his first Major League Spring Training as a non-roster invite—and he made the most of it. He delivered two game-winning hits during the exhibition season, including a two-run walk-off single against the Houston Astros on March 13. Quiet production, but production nonetheless.
Ledbetter’s arrival in the Cardinals organization didn’t make many headlines, but it should have. He was acquired on February 2, 2026, as part of a three-team trade involving the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners. The deal sent fan favorite Brendan Donovan to Seattle, with St. Louis receiving Ledbetter alongside additional assets. It was a move that may carry more long-term value than it first appeared.
Originally selected by Tampa Bay in the second round (55th overall) of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State, Ledbetter has built a reputation as a well-rounded, high-energy player.
At Double-A Montgomery in 2025, he hit .265/.337/.378 with seven home runs and 37 stolen bases over 123 games. The year prior at High-A Bowling Green, he batted .273 with 16 home runs, 65 RBI, and 34 stolen bases. The production is consistent, and the speed plays.
Scouts point to his advanced offensive approach and instincts on the bases. While his raw power and top-end speed grade out closer to average, Ledbetter makes up for it with feel for the game, effort, and presence. He’s the kind of player who finds ways to impact a game without needing to dominate it.
Defensively, he can handle all three outfield spots, though there’s a growing belief his long-term fit may come in a corner role.
Baseball America ranks him as the Cardinals’ No. 6 prospect entering the 2026 season—a number that suggests he won’t stay under the radar much longer.
Ledbetter may not have arrived with fanfare, but he’s already done enough to earn attention. Now at Memphis, he’s a name worth tracking closely as the season unfolds.
