In the Spotlight: LHP Quinn Mathews

#60 QUINN MATHEWS · LHP · 6-4 · 210 LBS · AGE 25

There are pitchers who fill a stat sheet — and there are pitchers who command attention. Quinn Mathews is beginning to do both.

Invited to Major League Spring Training camp for the second consecutive season, the left-hander made the most of his opportunity. In two outings (one start), Mathews worked 6.0 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts, continuing to show the swing-and-miss ability that has defined his rise through the system.

The strikeouts are not new.

In 2024, Mathews led all of Minor League Baseball with 202 strikeouts while splitting time across all four full-season Cardinals affiliates. He became just the 10th minor league pitcher in franchise history to eclipse the 200-strikeout threshold — and the first since Rick Ankiel in 1998. That season earned him the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year honors, joining rare company as one of only four to receive that award in their first professional season.

He followed up with 115 strikeouts in 2025, ranking among the club’s minor league leaders in both strikeouts and games started. Consistency, durability, and competitiveness continue to define his profile.

Nationally, Mathews enters 2026 rated as the No. 5 prospect in the Cardinals organization by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, and No. 150 overall by ESPN.

At 25, this is the stage where refinement becomes the focus. Command within the zone. Efficiency. Trusting his full arsenal against advanced hitters.

The strikeout totals prove the ceiling.

Now comes the next step — turning potential into opportunity.
