Jack Gurevitch Earns Player of the Day Honors for Peoria
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
Jack Gurevitch delivered the swing that changed the night for Peoria.
Gurevitch earned The Cardinal Chronicle’s MiLB Player of the Day honors after going 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, three RBIs and a run scored in the Chiefs’ 5-4 win over Cedar Rapids on Friday night at Dozer Park.
The big blow came in the fifth inning, with Peoria trailing 1-0 and needing someone to turn the game around. Gurevitch did exactly that, driving a three-run homer that gave the Chiefs a 4-1 lead and shifted the pressure back onto Cedar Rapids.
It proved to be the difference in a one-run game.
Peoria later added an important insurance run on a Jesús Báez solo homer, and the Chiefs needed every bit of it. Cedar Rapids pushed back late, but Gurevitch’s three-run shot remained the swing that put Peoria in control and gave the pitching staff something to protect.
For Gurevitch, it was another strong night in what has become a productive stretch. He is now hitting .342 with a .995 OPS, giving Peoria a steady middle-of-the-order presence at a time when the Chiefs are trying to build some momentum.
This was not just a good box score line. It was timely production.
A three-run homer in the middle innings, in a game decided by one run, is the kind of hit that carries weight. Gurevitch gave Peoria the lead, Franklin gave the Chiefs a strong start, and the defense made enough plays late to finish the job.
That is winning baseball.
On Friday night, Jack Gurevitch supplied the biggest swing of the game — and earned Player of the Day honors because of it.
