Minor League Player of the Day — Jimmy Crooks Powers Memphis Again
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
There are big nights… and then there are tone-setting nights.
Jimmy Crooks delivered one of those Friday.
The Memphis catcher launched a pair of solo home runs, accounting for two of the Redbirds’ five runs in a 5–3 win over Gwinnett. It marked his first multi-homer game of the season, and with it, Crooks moved into the upper tier of power hitters in the International League.
But the home runs are only part of the story.
Memphis is now 9–0 when Crooks is behind the plate.
That’s not just a hot streak — that’s a catcher influencing the game on both sides of the ball. Handling the pitching staff, controlling tempo, and now adding real power to the middle of the lineup, Crooks is becoming one of the more complete players on the roster.
Offensively, the left-handed hitter continues to show a clean, repeatable swing with the ability to drive the ball out to all fields. Defensively, he’s building trust with a pitching staff that continues to deliver in key spots.
It’s early, yes. But performances like this don’t go unnoticed.
For one night, and maybe a little longer, Jimmy Crooks wasn’t just part of Memphis’ success — he was leading it.
