Jonathan Mejia Earns Player of the Day Honors
St. Louis, Mo. — By Ray Mileur
On a night when the Palm Beach Cardinals came up short on the scoreboard, infielder Jonathan Mejia gave Cardinals fans a reason to take notice.
Mejia turned in the top offensive performance in the organization Wednesday night, collecting two hits and driving in four runs in Palm Beach's 11-6 loss to the Clearwater Threshers.
His biggest swing came in the seventh inning, when he lined a two-run double down the right-field line to cut into Clearwater's lead and breathe life into the Palm Beach dugout. Later, in the ninth, Mejia added a two-run single to right field, finishing off a four-RBI night that stood as the loudest offensive performance in the Cardinals' farm system.
Even in defeat, Mejia's night was a reminder of the kind of grit clubs look for in developing talent—steady at-bats, productive swings and a refusal to let the final score dictate the effort.
Some nights on the farm are about wins.
Some are about growth.
For Jonathan Mejia, Wednesday was about making a statement.
He is The Cardinal Chronicle's Minor League Player of the Day.
