MiLB Player of the Day — Leo Bernal (C, Memphis Redbirds)

Leo Bernal didn’t just have a good day—he drove the biggest win in the system on Sunday.

The Memphis catcher went a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and a walk, reaching base in all four plate appearances and playing a central role in a 6-5 comeback victory over Gwinnett. With the Redbirds trailing late, Bernal stepped up in the bottom of the eighth and delivered a game-tying solo home run, shifting the momentum in a game Memphis refused to let slip away.

Beyond the headline swing, Bernal set the tone throughout the afternoon. His consistent at-bats kept pressure on Gwinnett pitching, and his presence in the middle of the lineup helped spark the late rally that ultimately pushed Memphis into sole possession of first place in the International League.

What stands out here is not just the stat line—it’s the timing and impact. Bernal’s performance came in a tight, late-inning situation against a quality opponent, and he answered every time his number was called.

For a young catcher working to establish himself at the Triple-A level, this was the kind of all-around performance that resonates beyond the box score. He handled the pitching staff, contributed offensively in a major way, and played a direct role in securing a series win.

That’s how you play the game, the Cardinal Way.
