Miguel Ugueto Named Minor League Player of the Day
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
Miguel Ugueto did not quite finish the cycle Saturday night, but he came close enough to make the Springfield Cardinals’ win feel like his own personal showcase.
Ugueto went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, home run and RBI in Springfield’s 7-5 victory over the Corpus Christi Hooks at Route 66 Stadium, earning The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day honors.
His home run came in the first inning and helped Springfield jump out to an early lead. He later added a double and recorded the Cardinals’ first triple of the season, finishing just a single shy of Springfield’s first cycle since Thomas Saggese accomplished the feat in 2023.
That is the kind of night that jumps off a box score, but it was more than just a collection of extra-base hits. Ugueto gave Springfield early energy in a game that later tightened up, and his production helped the Cardinals stay in position long enough for Jeremy Rivas to deliver the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning.
Ryan Mitchell made the decision interesting with a strong night for Palm Beach, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs in the Cardinals’ 9-8 loss to Jupiter. Jimmy Crooks also stayed hot for Memphis, belting his 12th home run of the season in a 13-6 loss at Toledo.
But Saturday belonged to Ugueto.
Three hits. Three extra-base hits. A near-cycle. A win.
That will earn a man the headline.
