Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Jack Martinez Strikes Out Seven for Peoria

Jack Martinez did not have a clean final line, but he had the best strikeout performance in the Cardinals’ system Sunday.

Martinez worked 5.2 innings for Peoria, allowing four hits, four earned runs and no walks while striking out seven in the Chiefs’ 9-1 loss to West Michigan.

His final line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

It was not a spotless outing.

But there were things to like.

Martinez threw strikes. He did not walk a batter. He struck out seven. And for most of his outing, he gave Peoria a chance before West Michigan broke the game open later.

That matters on a day when pitching lines across the system were not especially clean.

The Chiefs could not get much going offensively, managing only four hits and one run. Sammy Hernandez supplied the only Peoria run with his 11th home run of the season.

But Martinez’s line still stood out for the swing-and-miss.

No walks.
Seven strikeouts.
Nearly six innings.

That is enough to earn Pitcher of the Day.
