Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Braden Davis Misses Bats as Springfield Rolls

Braden Davis did not have a spotless line Sunday night, but the swing-and-miss was loud enough to earn the spotlight.

Davis is the Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day after striking out seven over 3.2 innings in Springfield’s 9-2 win over Wichita at Route 66 Stadium.

His final line: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

The two runs came on solo home runs, and that kept the line from looking cleaner. But Davis kept Wichita from building anything sustained, missed bats in bunches and handed the game over with Springfield still in control.

The strikeouts were the story.

Seven punchouts in 3.2 innings tells you the stuff was playing. Davis threw 73 pitches, 43 for strikes, and while the two walks pushed up the pitch count, Wichita had trouble putting consistent pressure on him.

After Davis exited, the Springfield bullpen took over and shut the door completely.

Tyler Bradt, Hunter Hayes, José Davila, D.J. Carpenter and Michael Watson combined for 5.1 scoreless, hitless innings. That is how you turn a competitive game into a comfortable win.

Springfield’s offense gave the pitching staff plenty of support. The Cardinals hit four home runs, with Jesús Báez, Rainiel Rodriguez, Won-Bin Cho and Tre Richardson III all going deep. Richardson earned Player of the Day honors, while Rodriguez added three hits and two RBIs.

For Davis, this was another outing that showed why he remains an interesting arm in the system. The command still needs to tighten, and the home runs are part of the development story, but left-handers who can miss bats like this are worth tracking closely.

Seven strikeouts.
Three hits.
A first-place club rolling again.

That earns the nod.
