Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Braden Davis Sets the Tone for Springfield Sweep

Braden Davis gave Springfield exactly what it needed Sunday.

In the completion of Saturday’s suspended game against Arkansas, Davis worked 4.1 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and two walks while striking out seven in Springfield’s 4-2 win over the Travelers.

His final line: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

That is a strong tone-setter for the day.

Davis did not work deep enough to factor into a traditional starter’s decision, but he gave Springfield swing-and-miss, limited damage and kept the Cardinals in position to finish off the suspended game.

The bullpen took it from there.

Nolan Sparks, Michael Watson and José Davila combined for 3.2 scoreless innings, with Davila striking out three over two clean frames. Sandro Santana closed it out in the ninth, striking out three despite allowing a run.

Altogether, Springfield pitching struck out 15 Arkansas hitters in the 4-2 win.

Seven strikeouts from Davis.
Fifteen strikeouts from the staff.
A suspended game finished.
A Springfield win.

The Cardinals followed that with another victory later in the day, stretching their winning streak to six and strengthening their hold on first place in the Texas League North.

Sunday’s loudest bats belonged to Jesús Báez and Rainiel Rodriguez, but Davis gave Springfield the pitching foundation for the sweep.
