Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Daniel Eagen Strikes Out 10 as Springfield Keeps Rolling
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
Daniel Eagen gave Springfield another strong start Friday night, and this one came with plenty of swing-and-miss.
The Cardinals right-hander worked 6.1 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and no walks while striking out 10 in Springfield’s 5-3 win over Arkansas.
His final line: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 10 K
Eagen, now listed at No. 17 in the Cardinal Chronicle Prospect Watch, gave Springfield length, command and strikeouts. The three runs came in the fifth inning, but he did not let the game get away from him, and he left the Cardinals in position to win.
The no walks may be the most important part of the line.
Ten strikeouts will always get the attention, but pairing that with zero walks tells a better story. Eagen attacked the zone, missed bats and kept Arkansas from building extra traffic.
Springfield’s bullpen took it from there. Randel Clemente struck out both batters he faced, Domenic Picone worked a scoreless eighth, and Andrew Schultz closed it out in the ninth.
The win pushed Springfield’s streak to four and kept the Cardinals in first place in the Texas League North.
No walks.
Ten strikeouts.
A first-place team winning on the road.
That is a Pitcher of the Day performance.
