Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Daniel Eagen Fans 11 as Springfield Keeps Rolling

Daniel Eagen gave Springfield another strong start Thursday night, and this one came with plenty of swing-and-miss.

Eagen, the MLB Pipeline No. 17 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, worked 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out 11 in Springfield’s 7-2 win over San Antonio at Route 66 Stadium.

His final line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 11 K

Eagen gave Springfield length, command and strikeouts. He walked only one, kept San Antonio from building the big inning, and handed the game to a bullpen that finished the night without allowing another run.

The strikeouts were the story.

Eleven from Eagen.
Eighteen from the Springfield staff.
Another win for a first-place club.

Michael Watson, Joseph King, José Davila and Randel Clemente combined for the final 3.1 scoreless innings. Davila struck out three in the eighth, and Clemente added two more in the ninth.

Springfield has now won nine straight, and this club continues to look like one of the best stories in the Cardinals’ system.

Tai Peete supplied the power with two home runs, but Eagen supplied the pitching headline.

Five-plus innings.
Two earned runs.
One walk.
Eleven strikeouts.
A Springfield win.

That is a Pitcher of the Day performance.
