Mason Molina gave Memphis exactly what it needed Sunday.

Molina, the MLB Pipeline No. 18 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, earned Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day honors after working six scoreless innings in the Redbirds’ 3-0 win over Durham at AutoZone Park.

His final line: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

That is a dominant start.

Molina allowed only two hits, walked one and struck out nine. He threw 72 pitches, 48 for strikes, faced 20 batters and kept Durham off the scoreboard before turning it over to the bullpen.

The bullpen finished what Molina started.

Andrew Schultz followed with two scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out two. Ryan Murphy worked a clean ninth with one strikeout. Together, Memphis pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts.

The Redbirds gave Molina enough offense early.

Zach Levenson homered and drove in a run. Chase Davis doubled and drove in two. Noah Mendlinger had two hits and scored, while Ramon Mendoza also scored.

But this game was built on Molina’s start.

Six scoreless innings.
Two hits allowed.
Nine strikeouts.
One walk.
A Memphis shutout.

That is a Pitcher of the Day performance.
