Ty Van Dyke missed bats all night Wednesday for Peoria.

The Chiefs right-hander worked five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out 11 in Peoria’s 5-4 win over West Michigan.

His final line: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 11 K

That is a big time swing-and-miss night.

Van Dyke gave Peoria five strong innings and kept the Chiefs in the game while the offense waited for its chance. West Michigan scratched out a run in the third, but Van Dyke did not let the game get away from him.

The strikeouts were the story.

Eleven strikeouts in five innings tells you how much trouble hitters had picking him up. He gave up only three hits, and even with the three walks, he was able to pitch through traffic and keep West Michigan from building a big inning.

Peoria’s bullpen took it from there. Gerardo Salas worked a scoreless inning, Rubén Menes covered two innings, and Trey Pooser finished the ninth as the Chiefs held on.

The Peoria staff finished with 15 strikeouts.

The offense gave Van Dyke enough support late. Andrew Williamson homered and drove in two. Cade McGee also homered, and Anyelo Encarnación went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

But the pitching headline belonged to Van Dyke.

Five innings.
Three hits.
One earned run.
Eleven strikeouts.
A Peoria win.

That is a Pitcher of the Day performance.
