MiLB Player of the Day: Cade McGee St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
Cade McGee did everything but drive the bus home.
The Peoria Chiefs lost 6-5 to the Beloit Sky Carp on Sunday afternoon at ABC Supply Stadium, but McGee gave them every chance to win the game.
McGee is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day after going 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
That is the kind of day that gets the headline.
The final score did not go Peoria’s way, but McGee was the best player on the field. He drove in all five Chiefs runs, and every time Peoria needed offense, he was right in the middle of it.
McGee opened the scoring in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Peoria a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, he added the big swing.
With Michael Dattalo on first base, McGee hooked a line drive down the left-field line for a two-run homer, pushing the Chiefs ahead 3-0. Beloit argued the call, but the ruling stood.
McGee was not finished.
After the Sky Carp cut the lead to 3-2, McGee answered again in the sixth inning with another home run down the left-field line. That solo shot gave Peoria a 4-2 lead and gave McGee his second homer of the afternoon.
It was one of those days when the same hitter kept coming up in the biggest spots.
And he kept delivering.
Beloit eventually rallied behind three home runs of its own, taking a 6-4 lead in the seventh inning. But McGee came to the plate again in the eighth with Peoria trying to claw back into the game.
He delivered again.
McGee lined an RBI single to left-center field, cutting the deficit to 6-5 and giving the Chiefs another chance. Peoria left two runners on base to end the inning and could not finish the comeback, but that does not change what McGee did.
Two home runs.
Five RBIs.
Three hits.
Every Peoria run.
That is a complete offensive performance.
There are days when a player benefits from a blowout, piles onto an already comfortable lead and pads the box score. This was not that kind of day. McGee’s production carried Peoria’s offense from start to finish.
He gave the Chiefs the early lead.
He answered Beloit’s rally.
He brought Peoria back within one late.
That is impact hitting.
The Chiefs did not win the game, but McGee’s performance stood out across the Cardinals’ full-season system. On a Sunday when Springfield walked it off, Palm Beach stayed hot and Memphis struggled to find offense, McGee delivered the loudest individual line of the day.
Sometimes the best performance comes in a loss.
Sunday was one of those days.
Cade McGee earned The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day.
