Player of the Day: Dakota Harris Delivers Big Swing for Springfield
Dakota Harris gets the nod as The Cardinal Chronicle’s Player of the Day after helping power Springfield to a 6-4 win over the Frisco RoughRiders.
Harris went 3-for-4 with a double, a three-run home run and two runs scored, giving the Cardinals one of their biggest offensive performances of the night. His second-inning homer gave Springfield an early lead and helped set the stage for Liam Doyle to earn the first professional win of his career.
That swing mattered.
Springfield needed a response after a tough walk-off loss the night before, and Harris provided it early. His three-run shot gave the Cardinals breathing room and changed the shape of the game. In a contest decided by two runs, that kind of damage is the difference between chasing the game and controlling it.
Harris has been one of the more interesting position players on the Springfield roster because of his combination of defensive versatility and sneaky offensive impact.
Harris is listed primarily as a shortstop, but his value extends well beyond one position. He has shown the ability to play across the infield and has also seen time in left field, giving Springfield a useful and flexible defender.
That versatility has been part of his profile since entering the organization. The Cardinals selected Harris in the 11th round of the 2023 MLB Draft, taking him 335th overall, and he has worked his way into a steady role at Double-A.
He spent the full 2025 season with Springfield, where his defensive flexibility became more noticeable and his bat showed signs of growth. One of his best stretches came in July, when he hit .356, showing the ability to get hot and carry production for extended periods.
Then came the start of 2026.
Harris opened the season with a loud power surge, making history by hitting grand slams in consecutive games to begin the year. In his first nine at-bats of the season, he produced three home runs and 11 RBIs, the kind of start that grabs attention in a hurry.
Wednesday night was another reminder of what he can bring when the bat is right.
César Prieto deserves mention after reaching base four times for Memphis, and Tre Richardson III stayed hot for Peoria with another home run. But Harris had the biggest all-around offensive night and delivered the swing that shaped Springfield’s win.
Three hits. A double. A three-run homer. Two runs scored.
That is a complete night, and for Springfield, it came at exactly the right time.
