Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day: Jesús Báez Turns Springfield Sweep Into a Power Show

Jesús Báez did not just have the best offensive game in the Cardinals’ system Sunday.He had the kind of day that takes over a farm report.

Báez, the MLB Pipeline No. 21 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, hit four home runs total across Springfield’s two wins over Arkansas. He homered in the completion of Saturday’s suspended game, then came back in the regularly scheduled game and went 4-for-5 with three home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.

His line in the second game: 4-for-5, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 3 R

His total for the day: 5-for-9, 4 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R

That is a full day’s work.

In the first game, Báez helped Springfield finish off a 4-2 win over Arkansas with a home run and two RBIs. The Cardinals then came back in the second game and won 11-4, with Báez delivering three more home runs and five more RBIs.

Four home runs in two games.

Seven RBIs.

Two Springfield wins.

That is not just a hot day. That is a statement.

Báez was not alone in the second game. Rainiel Rodriguez, the MLB Pipeline No. 1 prospect, went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored, giving Springfield one of the loudest middle-of-the-order performances of the season.

But this day belonged to Jesús Báez.

The Cardinals have leaned on Springfield all season as one of the most exciting teams in the system, and Sunday showed why. The lineup has power, depth and prospects changing games with one swing.

Báez changed two of them.

Springfield has now won six straight, sits in first place in the Texas League North, and Báez is right in the middle of the charge.
