Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day: Leo Bernal Drives Memphis Shutout
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
Leo Bernal gave Memphis the biggest swing of the night Saturday, and it helped turn the game into a Redbirds runaway.
Bernal, the MLB Pipeline No. 6 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, went 1-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs, a run scored and a walk in Memphis’ 10-0 win over Jacksonville at AutoZone Park.
His final line: 1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI, R, BB
That is a Gold Glove Award winning catcher doing damage in the middle of an upper-level lineup.
Bernal hit his 16th home run of the season and pushed his RBI total to 77, continuing a strong offensive year at Triple-A. The Redbirds scored 10 runs on 10 hits, but Bernal delivered the biggest run-production swing of the night.
For a catcher, those numbers matter.
The Cardinals’ system has depth behind the plate, with Rainiel Rodriguez carrying the top prospect label and Bernal continuing to produce one step from St. Louis. Bernal’s profile has always included defensive value, but the bat keeps giving the Cardinals something more to consider.
Saturday was another example.
A home run.
Four RBIs.
A walk.
A shutout win.
Memphis also got strong work from the pitching staff, allowing only two hits while striking out 13. But Bernal gave the offense its headline.
The Redbirds won big.
Leo Bernal earned the spotlight.
