Minor League Player of the Day: Trevor Haskins

Trevor Haskins gave Palm Beach power when it needed it.

Then he gave the Cardinals some breathing room when the game started tightening up.

Haskins is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day after hitting two home runs in Palm Beach’s 8-5 win over the Bradenton Marauders on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Both swings mattered.

His first home run came in the fourth inning, an opposite-field solo shot that stretched Palm Beach’s lead to 6-2. At that point, the Cardinals had already answered an early Bradenton lead and were starting to take control of the game.

Haskins helped push it further in their direction.

The second home run may have been even more important.

Bradenton had scored in the seventh and added two more runs in the eighth, cutting Palm Beach’s lead to 7-5. The game was no longer comfortable. The Marauders had momentum, and the Cardinals needed an answer before handing the game to the bullpen in the ninth.

Haskins supplied it.

In the bottom of the eighth, he hit his second solo home run of the night, pushing Palm Beach’s lead back to three runs and giving the Cardinals the insurance run they needed.

That is not empty power.

That is a hitter responding to the moment.

Palm Beach went on to close out the 8-5 win, improving to 5-1 in the second half and staying unbeaten against Bradenton this season.

Haskins finished with two home runs and two RBIs, giving him five home runs on the season. On a night when Palm Beach had several strong offensive performances, his power stood out because of the timing.

Ian Petrutz deserves strong mention after going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Heriberto Caraballo added three hits and drove in a run. Chase Heath went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored.

Memphis also had power in its loss at Jacksonville, with Nolan Gorman, Bligh Madris and Jeremy Rivas all hitting home runs. Rivas’ blast was his first career Triple-A homer.

But Haskins had the best offensive night in the system.

Two home runs.

A late insurance blast.

A Palm Beach win.

That earns the honor.

Old School Take

A two-homer game is always worth noticing.

But the second one is what made Trevor Haskins the pick.

Palm Beach had seen its lead cut to two runs, and the game was starting to tighten. Haskins answered with another home run and gave the Cardinals room to finish.

That is what good hitters do.

They do not just add to the box score.

They change the feel of the game.

That is why Trevor Haskins is The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Player of the Day.
