Trainer’s Table Update

There’s progress in camp, but it’s coming in measured steps.

Lars Nootbaar continues to check the right boxes in his recovery from October surgery to correct deformities in both heels. He’s been able to hit and throw without issue, and that’s a significant hurdle cleared. The final piece—running—is just now coming along. The Cardinals even delayed his full arrival to camp while waiting on a specialized altered-gravity treadmill to ease him back into motion.

Nootbaar admitted Wednesday he doesn’t have a firm timetable, and the expectation remains that he’ll open the season on the injured list. The good news? Once he’s fully healthy, he steps right back into his role as the club’s everyday left fielder. This isn’t about ability—it’s about patience.

Hunter Dobbins is closer to a green light. Recovering from last July’s ACL surgery, he’s already thrown bullpen sessions and faced live hitters. The final clearance may come from Wednesday's visit with a specialist in Wisconsin. If he gets the thumbs up, he should see some Grapefruit League action.

Still, the late start likely removes him from serious Opening Day rotation consideration. It’s more about building strength than building momentum at this point.

Brandon Clarke’s situation is more long-term. After undergoing a January procedure to address an aneurysm in his left arm, an issue that caused circulation problems, blisters, and finger numbness. He’s not expected to be game-ready until June. Acquired in the Sonny Gray deal, Clarke logged just 38 innings last season but showed flashes with 60 strikeouts across two levels. The priority now is health. The innings can wait.
