Quinn Mathews Named Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Month
St. Louis, MO
By Ray Mileur
Quinn Mathews didn't just have an outstanding July—he proved he was ready for the next challenge.
The Memphis Redbirds left-hander is The Cardinal Chronicle's Minor League Pitcher of the Month after a dominant month that also earned him MiLB Today's Pitcher of the Month honors and culminated with his long-awaited promotion to St. Louis.
Over five starts in July, Mathews logged 26.0 innings, posting a sparkling 1.04 ERA and 0.77 WHIP while striking out 28 batters. Opposing hitters struggled to square him up throughout the month as he consistently worked deep into games, limited traffic on the bases, and gave Memphis a chance to win every time he took the mound.
Perhaps the most encouraging development wasn't simply the results—it was how Mathews achieved them.
Earlier in the season, command occasionally interrupted his outings. In July, those concerns largely disappeared. He attacked the strike zone with confidence, trusted his fastball, and mixed his secondary pitches effectively, allowing his strikeout ability to play without sacrificing efficiency.
The Cardinals have long believed Mathews possessed the stuff to become a major league starter. During July, he demonstrated the polish that accompanies that talent.
Several Cardinals pitchers enjoyed exceptional months throughout the organization. Double-A left-hander Blake Aita continued to provide quality innings for Springfield, while Jurrangelo Cijntje remained one of the organization's most electric young arms, showing why he continues to climb prospect rankings. Across the system, Cardinals pitching was one of the organization's greatest strengths.
Still, no pitcher combined consistency, run prevention, and impact quite like Mathews.
His promotion to St. Louis wasn't simply a reward for one great outing. It was the culmination of a month in which he established himself as one of the organization's premier pitching prospects and demonstrated he had little left to prove at Triple-A.
July wasn't merely Quinn Mathews' best month of the season.
It was the month he earned his place in the major leagues.
