Rain, Rain, and then came the Pain and more Pain

Morning Farm Report
St. Louis, Mo. — By Ray Mileur

A wet Tuesday washed away two games in the Cardinals’ system, but there was still plenty of action down on the farm — some good swings, a rough night on the mound, and a few bright spots worth noting.

The top two clubs in the organization — the Memphis Redbirds and Springfield Cardinals — were both rained out, leaving the spotlight on High-A Peoria and Low-A Palm Beach.

Down on the Farm, here’s how it played out:

Memphis Redbirds (18-9, 1st Place, International League)
Postponed — Rain

Mother Nature won this round.

The Redbirds remain perched atop the International League West at 18-9, continuing what has been one of the strongest starts in the system. Memphis has set the tone early this season with steady pitching, veteran leadership, and enough lineup depth to weather the long grind of a Triple-A season.

A rainout in late April is baseball’s way of handing everybody a surprise day off — pitchers get an extra breather, hitters get a reset, and clubhouse card games suddenly matter a whole lot more.

Springfield Cardinals (7-14, 5th Place, Texas League, 7.5 GB)
Postponed — Rain

No baseball in Springfield Tuesday, either.

The Cardinals continue searching for traction in the Texas League North, where early inconsistency has left them trying to dig out of a hole. Still, April standings don’t write the final chapter. Development remains the priority, and Springfield’s roster still features arms and bats capable of heating up as weather warms.

Sometimes a rainout is not the worst thing in the world — it gives a club time to clear its head, catch its breath, and come back swinging.

Peoria Chiefs (10-11, 4th Place, Midwest League, 4.0 GB)
Loons 11, Chiefs 4

It was a long night at Dow Diamond for Peoria Chiefs pitching.

Great Lakes pounded out 18 hits, the most allowed by Peoria in a game this season, rolling past the Chiefs 11-4 in the series opener.

Top prospect Tai Peete continued his strong spring, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs, becoming the first hitter in the Midwest League to reach 20 RBIs this season. That’s real production, and it continues to strengthen his early-season stock.

Josh Kross added his first home run of the season, while Anyelo Encarnacion crossed the plate in another multi-run rally effort.

On the mound, hard-throwing right-hander Tanner Franklin ran into trouble early, surrendering four first-inning runs before settling down briefly. He was tagged with his first loss of the season.

One encouraging note: newly promoted Patrick Galle made his High-A debut and tossed a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, stranding inherited runners. Quiet work like that often matters more than flashy box-score lines.

Old School Take:
Some nights, you tip your cap and burn the game tape. Eighteen hits allowed will humble any staff. But Peete keeps swinging a loud bat — and that’s worth watching.

Palm Beach Cardinals (15-7, 1st Place, Florida State League)
Threshers 7, Cardinals 3

Palm Beach Cardinals jumped out early, but one rough inning proved costly.

Ryan Weingartner launched his second home run of the season in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games and staking Palm Beach to a 1-0 lead.

Then the storm hit.

Starter Cade Crossland ran into command trouble in the third, walking three straight batters before a Clearwater grand slam blew the game open. Crossland was charged with a career-high seven earned runs in the loss.

Palm Beach did show some fight:

- Jack Gurevitch hit his team-leading fourth home run
- Gurevitch later added an RBI single, giving him 20 RBIs on the year
- Jake Shelagowski quietly delivered 3⅔ scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts, one of the better pitching performances of the night in the system

Old School Take:
Bad inning. That’s baseball. Flush it. But Weingartner’s hot bat and Gurevitch’s RBI production continue to be very real bright spots in Jupiter.

- Player of the Night: Tai Peete (Peoria) — 2-for-5, 3 RBIs

Even on a mixed night, there are always stories in the farm system. You just have to know where to look.

The old beat writers understood that. Scorebook in hand, coffee on the desk, radio humming in the background — and somewhere in the box score, tomorrow’s headline waiting to be found.
