Shelagowski Delivers Steady Relief
Palm Beach right-hander provides bright spot with a scoreless outing out of bullpen.
ST. LOUIS — By Ray Mileur
Not every standout performance comes in a win.
Sometimes it comes when a game is slipping away — when somebody is asked to take the ball, settle things down, and keep the rest of the bullpen from wearing the damage.
That was Jake Shelagowski on Tuesday night for the Palm Beach Cardinals.
Entering after a difficult early stretch for Palm Beach pitching, Shelagowski gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed — 3⅔ scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts, stabilizing the game and giving his club a chance to claw back into contention.
It was quiet work.
Professional work.
Winning baseball organizations value those innings more than casual fans often realize.
After starter Cade Crossland was tagged for seven earned runs through three innings, Palm Beach needed somebody to stop the momentum. Shelagowski answered the call, attacking hitters, filling the strike zone and giving Clearwater little room to build on its big lead.
No panic. No unraveling. Just outs.
That outing matters — not only because of the zeros he put on the board, but because it showed poise in a difficult spot.
Those are innings that build trust.
Old School Take:
Every club needs horses at the front of the rotation, but championship organizations also need bullpen arms willing to take the hard innings — the ones where the game is tilted, and somebody has to restore order. Jake Shelagowski did exactly that Tuesday night.
No headline-grabbing moment.
Just a pitcher doing his job.
And sometimes, that’s baseball at its finest.
