The Sunday Farm Report
For years, the St. Louis Cardinals have built their reputation on developing talent from within. From the farm fields of Arkansas to the bright lights of Busch Stadium, their greatest strength has always been the player pipeline.
Now, that pipeline is surging again.
Baseball America recently ranked the Cardinals’ farm system No. 2 in Major League Baseball—a significant endorsement of the organization’s player development. Even more telling: five Cardinals landed inside FanGraphs’ updated Top 100 prospect rankings, signaling that this isn’t just about depth, but about true impact talent.
INF JJ Wetherholt (No. 12) - headlines the group. A polished hitter with advanced bat control and emerging power, Wetherholt projects as a cornerstone infielder—the type of player organizations build around, not just plug in.
LHP Liam Doyle (No. 19) - brings a potential frontline arm from the left side. The Cardinals have long valued strike-throwers who dominate the zone, and Doyle’s blend of command and swing-and-miss stuff fits that mold.
Behind the plate, the Cardinals boast rare strength and depth. C Rainiel Rodriguez (No. 25) and C Jimmy Crooks (No. 93) both provide legitimate depth at a premium position—often the difference between contenders and pretenders. Rodriguez brings offensive upside, while Crooks adds polish and leadership.
Then there’s SHP Jurrangelo Cijntje (No. 94), the ambidextrous pitcher who throws from both sides of the mound—a developmental curiosity with real upside if harnessed properly.
What makes this ranking meaningful isn’t just the number next to the Cardinals’ name. It’s the balance—impact bats, frontline arms, catching depth, and athleticism spread throughout the system.
The Cardinal Way has always been about sustaining success, not chasing it.
A No. 2 farm system doesn’t guarantee October baseball, but it does guarantee options. And in this game, options win.
