Walker Breaks Out, But Cardinals Drop Series in Detroit
The St. Louis Cardinals showed signs of life at the plate Saturday—but not enough to overcome another rough night on the mound.
St. Louis fell to the Detroit Tigers 11–6 in a game called in the ninth inning due to rain, dropping their first road series of the 2026 season.
If there was a bright spot, it was Jordan Walker. The young outfielder turned in his best game of the season, going 3-for-4 and launching a towering 459-foot grand slam in the fifth inning. He accounted for five of the Cardinals’ six runs, showing the kind of impact bat the organization has been waiting on.
It was a needed breakthrough after a slow stretch—and a reminder of what he can be when everything clicks.
Pitching Sets the Tone Early
The game turned quickly, and early.
Starter Dustin May struggled to find his footing, allowing seven runs on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings. Detroit’s lineup didn’t miss mistakes, jumping on pitches and driving the ball out of the park four times.
That early deficit forced the Cardinals to play from behind all night.
Some Signs, But Not Enough
There were pieces to like.
Alec Burleson chipped in with an RBI double. Ivan Herrera reached and scored twice. JJ Wetherholt showed patience at the plate with two walks and added a stolen base.
But the offense, outside of Walker, never sustained pressure.
And against a club swinging the bats like Detroit did Saturday, that’s a tough way to win.
Series Slips Away
With the loss, the Cardinals drop their first road series of the season, falling back to .500.
It’s early—but these are the games that set tone and direction.
The finale comes Sunday, with St. Louis looking to salvage one before heading home.
The Bottom Line
Jordan Walker showed up.
The rest of the rainy night? Not enough.
That’s the story.
