THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinals Routed in Philadelphia St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurPHILADELPHIA — One night after the St. Louis Cardinals pushed the Phillies into extra innings, there was no late drama, no comeback push and no narrow finish.This one got away early.Philadelphia scored three runs in the first inning, added four more in the third and rolled past the Cardinals, 12-3, Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park.It was an ugly loss for St. Louis, which followed Friday night’s 7-6, 10-inning defeat with a game that never found much traction. The Cardinals fell behind before their offense could get settled, and the Phillies kept adding on against a pitching staff that had little room to breathe.Quinn Mathews took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out three, but Philadelphia put pressure on him from the start.Kyle Schwarber opened the first with a walk, Trea Turner singled, and Alec Bohm drove in the first run with a single to left. Realmuto doubled, Justin Crawford singled, Schwarber lifted a sacrifice fly, and Harper hit a three-run homer to right to make it 11-1.Wetherholt gave the Cardinals their best swing in the eighth, homering to center off José Alvarado. It was his 17th home run of the season and one of the few bright spots in an otherwise rough night.Schwarber answered in the bottom of the inning with his 38th homer, restoring Philadelphia’s 10-run lead.Nathan Church tripled in the ninth and scored on José Fermín’s groundout, giving the Cardinals their final run.Wetherholt finished 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI. Church had two hits and scored a run, while Burleson, Fermín and Wetherholt drove in the Cardinals’ runs. Jordan doubled and scored.The Cardinals finished with seven hits, did not draw a walk and struck out nine times. They left 11 men on base, including several chances to at least make the score more respectable.Philadelphia finished with 15 hits. Schwarber homered, walked, scored twice and drove in two. Harper drove in three with his sixth-inning homer. Sosa had two hits and two RBIs against his former club, while De La Cruz also drove in two.For St. Louis, this was the kind of loss that needs to be flushed quickly. The Cardinals had been playing better baseball, winning five straight series before arriving in Philadelphia, but the first two games of this series have gone the other direction.Friday was a game they nearly stole.Saturday was a game they never controlled.The Cardinals still have a chance to salvage the finale, but this one was a reminder of how thin the margin can be against playoff-caliber clubs. The only run of the game came in the first inning, and it was unearned.Gerardo Salas recorded the final out for Peoria.The offense, however, could not break through.Peoria had four hits, all doubles. Ian Petrutz went 2-for-3 with two doubles, while Cade McGee also went 2-for-2 with two doubles. That was the entire Chiefs offense.Takeaway: Odle was excellent, but Peoria could not turn four doubles into a run and lost a tough one.Palm Beach Cardinals — Low-A Overall Record: 59-60 Second Half: 26-27, 2nd in the Florida State League East, 7.0 GB Streak: L1Fort Myers 5, Palm Beach 2Palm Beach scored early but had only one hit in a 5-2 loss to Fort Myers.That one hit came from Ryan Mitchell, the MLB Pipeline No. 24 prospect in the Cardinals’ system. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinals Fall Short in 10 at Philadelphia St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurPHILADELPHIA — The St. Louis Cardinals kept answering Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. They answered after Philadelphia erased an early lead. They answered after the Phillies went back in front in the sixth. They answered again in the 10th inning.They just did not get the final answer.The Cardinals took a one-run lead in the top of the 10th on José Fermín’s RBI single, but Philadelphia scored twice in the bottom half to beat St. Louis, 7-6, in the opener of a three-game series.It was a tough loss, but not an empty one. The Cardinals played from behind, came back more than once and forced extra innings against a club holding one of the National League Wild Card spots. For a team trying to stay in the chase, there was plenty of fight. There just was not enough finish.St. Louis jumped in front in the first inning against Jesús Luzardo. Jordan Walker reached ahead of Joshua Báez, and Báez continued his big first week in the majors by driving a two-run homer to right-center field. It was his fourth home run since joining the Cardinals and gave St. Louis a quick 2-0 lead.Philadelphia answered in the second. Bryson Stott scored on Brandon Marsh’s double, and J.T. Realmuto followed with another double to bring home Marsh, tying the game at 2.The Phillies moved ahead in the third when Luis Arraez scored on Alec Bohm’s single to right, giving Philadelphia a 3-2 lead against Hunter Dobbins.Dobbins who left the game with forearm tightness, worked four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. It was not his cleanest outing, but he kept the Cardinals close enough to stay in the game.Luzardo, meanwhile, struck out nine over 5.2 innings, but the Cardinals got to him again in the sixth. Iván Herrera reached, and Walker drove a two-run homer to right-center, putting St. Louis back ahead, 4-3.Walker has been one of the Cardinals’ most important bats during this stretch, and Friday was another example. He finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, giving St. Louis production in the middle of the order and another big swing in a tight game.The lead did not last.Philadelphia came back in the bottom of the sixth against the Cardinals bullpen. Realmuto doubled to deep left, scoring Bohm and moving Marsh to third. Justin Crawford followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Marsh and giving the Phillies a 5-4 lead.That could have been enough to bury the Cardinals. Instead, they kept grinding.Alec Burleson came off the bench in the eighth and singled. Everson Pereira reached, and Bryan Torres delivered a two-out single to center, scoring Burleson and tying the game at 5.That was the kind of at-bat that gives a team life on the road. Torres did not try to do too much. He found the grass, brought home the run and gave the Cardinals another chance.Justin Bruihl helped make that chance matter. The left-hander worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and keeping the game tied long enough for St. Louis to push it into extras.In the 10th, the Cardinals took advantage of the automatic runner. Burleson started at second, and Fermín singled to left to bring him home, putting St. Louis in front, 6-5.For a moment, the Cardinals were positioned to steal the opener.Philadelphia took it back.The Phillies scored twice in the bottom of the 10th to finish the game and hand St. Louis a frustrating loss after the Cardinals had fought their way into position to win.Báez finished 1-for-3 with the two-run homer. Those missed chances mattered in a one-run game.Philadelphia had nine hits, led by Realmuto, who doubled twice and drove in two. Marsh also doubled, scored twice and drove in a run, while Bohm had two hits and an RBI.For St. Louis, the loss snapped the momentum from a five-series winning streak and Thursday’s wild comeback in Cincinnati. The Cardinals had arrived in Philadelphia carrying a little energy after taking three of five from the Reds. They showed some of that same toughness Friday night, but the Phillies were able to match it and finish the game at home.There is no shame in the way the Cardinals fought. They took an early lead. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Face Painter as Starter Remains TBD in Philadelphia St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals were one out, one pitch, one clean inning away from taking the series opener in Philadelphia.Instead, they are back in a familiar position.Trying to shake off another game that slipped away.St. Louis returns to Citizens Bank Park tonight for the second game of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies, looking to rebound after Friday night’s 7-6, 10-inning loss. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. CT, with the Cardinals’ starting pitcher still listed as TBD on the official club probable-pitchers page.Philadelphia will send right-hander Andrew Painter to the mound.The Cardinals enter the game at 66-64, while the Phillies come in at 71-58 and riding a seven-game winning streak. Philadelphia has been playing like a club trying to lock down its postseason position. St. Louis, meanwhile, is still trying to keep its own stretch drive from turning into a daily argument with the standings.Friday night had all the pieces of a road win.Joshua Báez gave the Cardinals an early lift with a two-run homer in the first inning, his first home run since his historic three-homer major league debut Aug. 15. Brandon Marsh added an RBI double.The Cardinals did some things right.They also did not finish.That has been the thin line for this team all season.The offense showed up. The young bats created damage. Walker looked like the middle-order force St. Louis has been waiting on. Báez flashed the power that made his debut impossible to ignore. The Cardinals put themselves in position to win a road game against a hot Phillies club.Then the final inning got away.Now tonight becomes about playing cleaner baseball, no matter who takes the ball first for St. Louis.With the starter still unannounced, the Cardinals could be looking at a late rotation decision, a bullpen-style game, or a move connected to roster management. Whatever the plan becomes, the job is the same.Get early outs.Limit traffic.Do not let the Phillies turn the first three innings into a bullpen emergency.That last part matters because Philadelphia’s lineup is dangerous enough even when a pitcher is working clean. Give the Phillies extra baserunners, and the game can get heavy fast. Kyle Schwarber remains the top power threat. Bryce Harper changes the way a pitcher works through the middle of the order. Trea Turner can pressure the defense. Bohm, Arraez, Realmuto and Marsh showed Friday how many ways this lineup can hurt a team without needing everything to come by home run.The Phillies are not winning seven straight by accident.They are stacking innings, getting production from multiple spots and finding ways to finish games.The Cardinals have to do a better job of stopping the snowball.On the other side, Painter enters at 2-8 with a 6.43 ERA and 71 strikeouts. The numbers suggest St. Louis should have opportunities, but there is a difference between having opportunities and cashing them in. Painter still has the kind of arm talent that can make hitters chase if they get impatient, and the Cardinals cannot let his record become a reason to give away at-bats.The plan against Painter should be direct.Make him throw strikes. Get traffic early. Force him to work from the stretch. Do not chase elevated fastballs or breaking balls out of the zone. When he gives the Cardinals something over the plate, do damage.This is not a night for waiting around.The Phillies’ bullpen was forced to work through a 10-inning game Friday, and the Cardinals need to make that matter. If they can get Painter out early or create stress in the middle innings, they can put pressure on the part of Philadelphia’s staff that had to cover important outs in the opener.But that only works if St. Louis keeps the pressure on.Walker is the obvious bat to watch. His home run Friday was his team-leading 27th of the season, and his three-hit night continued one of his best stretches of the year. When Walker is driving the ball with authority, the entire lineup looks different.Báez is another storyline. His first-inning homer was his first since the debut fireworks, and while young hitters are going to ride through some quiet stretches, the power is loud enough to change a game at any time. If he is making contact and forcing pitchers to respect the damage, he gives the Cardinals a different look.Iván Herrera, Alec Burleson, JJ Wetherholt, Masyn Winn, Fermín, Torres and the rest of the order all have to help lengthen the night. The Cardinals cannot ask Walker and Báez to carry the entire offense. They need baserunners in front of the power. They need two-out at-bats like Torres gave them Friday. They need productive innings instead of scattered swings.The bigger picture is clear.The Cardinals are still in the fight, but the margin keeps getting smaller. Games like Friday hurt because they are winnable games against good teams. They also carry extra weight because Philadelphia is one of the clubs St. Louis is trying to chase in the National League postseason picture.A loss tonight gives Philadelphia the series and leaves the Cardinals trying to avoid a sweep Sunday.A win brings St. Louis back into the series and turns Sunday into a chance to take something from the weekend.That is the difference.The Cardinals do not need a perfect game tonight.They need a cleaner one.They need whoever starts to give them structure. They need the bullpen to finish innings. They need the offense to get to Painter early enough for it to matter. The three runs came in the fifth inning, but he did not let the game get away from him, and he left the Cardinals in position to win.The no walks may be the most important part of the line.Ten strikeouts will always get the attention, but pairing that with zero walks tells a better story. Eagen attacked the zone, missed bats and kept Arkansas from building extra traffic.Springfield’s bullpen took it from there.
