He brought energy, patience at the plate, defensive versatility and one of the more recognizable fan connections on the roster. For several years, he felt like one of those players who was simply part of the fabric of the club.But deadlines do not deal in sentiment.The Cardinals traded Nootbaar to the Arizona Diamondbacks, turning one more year of control and an injury-interrupted 2026 season into two pitching prospects and a player to be named later.Coming back to St. Louis are right-hander Daniel Eagen and left-hander Sandro Santana.That is the part worth studying.Because this deal is not just about saying goodbye to Nootbaar. It is about what Chaim Bloom is trying to build. The Cardinals have been adding pitching depth aggressively, and this trade continues that pattern. After moving Dustin May and JoJo Romero to Milwaukee for Alexander Frías and Josiah Ragsdale, St. Louis followed by turning Nootbaar into two more arms.There is a clear direction here.The Cardinals are trying to restock the system with pitching, athletic upside and controllable talent.Eagen is the headliner.The 23-year-old right-hander was one of Arizona’s better pitching prospects, ranking near the top of the Diamondbacks’ system before the deal. He is 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, a 2024 third-round pick out of Presbyterian, and he brings the kind of pitch mix that makes him more interesting than his surface ERA might suggest.That is important, because the surface numbers are not pretty.Eagen’s 2026 ERA at Double-A Amarillo sits over 5.00. In a vacuum, that number will scare off casual prospect watchers. It should not be ignored, but it also should not be the entire evaluation.The Texas League can be a brutal environment for pitchers, and Amarillo is not exactly a soft landing spot. More importantly, Eagen has continued to miss bats. He has size, multiple pitches and a track record of strikeouts. The Cardinals should give him every chance to remain in that role. But if the command does not sharpen enough, the fallback path is not hard to see.A mid-90s fastball, plus breaking ball and swing-and-miss profile can absolutely play in the bullpen.That gives Eagen more than one way to reach St. Louis.That matters.The Cardinals need starting pitching, but they also need power arms. Eagen gives them both possibilities. He is not a finished product. He is not a guaranteed rotation piece. But he is the kind of arm worth betting on, especially in a system that needs more upper-level pitching with strikeout ability.This is not a lottery-ticket arm from the lowest levels.Eagen has already reached Double-A. He needs to keep getting outs, keep attacking hitters and prove the Double-A success is not a small-sample mirage.If he does that, he could become a real bullpen piece.That is the value in this kind of trade.The Cardinals did not get one clean, obvious future star. That was never likely for Nootbaar, especially given his injury history and uneven offensive production this season. What they got was something more realistic and still useful: two arms with different paths to the big leagues.Eagen gives them upside.Santana gives them proximity.Eagen gives them a chance at a starter or power multi-inning arm.Santana gives them a left-handed bullpen candidate.Together, they make the trade easier to understand.This is also where the player to be named later matters. We do not know that final piece yet, so the trade cannot be fully graded. The PTBNL may be nothing more than organizational depth. It could also become a young lottery ticket. Until that name is known, the return is incomplete.But the two known pieces already give the Cardinals something they needed.More pitching.That has been the theme of this deadline.The Cardinals did not simply move veterans to move them. They targeted prospect capital, and especially arms. That does not make every deal an automatic win, but it does show a front office trying to reshape the organization’s inventory.For years, the Cardinals have lacked enough pitching depth to cover injuries, underperformance and developmental misses. That problem does not get fixed with one trade. It gets fixed by volume, scouting and development.Eagen and Santana are part of that volume.The Cardinals are taking chances on traits. Strikeouts. Pitch shape. Left-handed relief potential. Upper-level experience. Multiple paths to the majors.That is how organizations build better pitching depth.For Nootbaar, this is a tough goodbye. He was a fan favorite, and those players are never easy to move. But this was also the kind of decision a front office has to make when the roster needs to be rebalanced.Nootbaar had value because he was not a rental.The Cardinals turned that value into two arms and another piece still to come.That does not mean fans have to love the trade emotionally.But from a baseball standpoint, it makes sense.The Cardinals had outfield decisions coming. There were only so many at-bats available, and Nootbaar’s long-term place was no longer as secure as it once seemed.So Bloom moved him while there was still value to capture.Now the responsibility shifts to player development.Getting Eagen is one thing.Refining him is another.Getting Santana is one thing.Turning him into a trusted left-handed bullpen piece is another.That is where this deal will ultimately be judged.Not today.Not by prospect rankings alone.Not by the emotional sting of losing Nootbaar.This trade will be judged by whether Eagen’s swing-and-miss stuff becomes major league innings and whether Santana’s breakout carries over in the Cardinals’ system.If one of them becomes a useful big league arm, the deal can work.If Eagen becomes a starter, it may look even better.If Santana becomes a left-handed reliever who helps the Cardinals’ bullpen in 2027, that matters too.The Cardinals did not win the trade because they acquired two names.They win the trade only if they develop the arms.That is the real challenge.For now, the return is clear enough.Daniel Eagen is the upside arm.Sandro Santana is the left-handed bullpen bet.The player to be named later is still to come.And Lars Nootbaar leaves St. Louis as a popular player who gave the Cardinals real moments, real energy and, at the end, real trade value.That is not a bad legacy.It is just the hard business of baseball. The Cardinal Chronicle In the Spotlight: Josiah Ragsdale Gives Cardinals Speed and a Surging Left-Handed Bat St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe second piece in the Dustin May and JoJo Romero trade should not be treated like a throw-in.When the Cardinals sent May and Romero to the Milwaukee Brewers, the headline prospect in the deal was 18-year-old outfielder Alexander Frias. That is understandable. Frias brings louder raw tools, youth and projection. But Josiah Ragsdale may be the player in the return who is closer to helping St. Louis.And he is not exactly sneaking in quietly.Ragsdale, a 22-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder, came to the Cardinals after a breakout season in the Brewers’ system. Reuters reported that Milwaukee sent Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale to St. Louis in exchange for May and Romero, with both Cardinals pitchers set to become free agents after the season. Ragsdale was listed as the Brewers’ No. 13 prospect by MLB Pipeline at the time of the trade.That last part matters.This was not simply the Cardinals taking a lottery ticket on a distant prospect. Ragsdale has already reached Double-A, already performed, and already forced evaluators to adjust their view of his ceiling.The Cardinals assigned Ragsdale directly to Springfield after the trade, a notable placement for a player drafted just a year ago. Baseball Savant’s transaction log shows Ragsdale was assigned to the Springfield Cardinals on Aug. 3 after the deal, following his promotion from High-A Wisconsin to Double-A Biloxi on June 30.That is a quick climb.Ragsdale’s baseball path began in the Northeast. A Vineland, New Jersey native, he spent his first two college seasons at Iona before transferring to Boston College for his junior year. At BC, he became one of the most productive players on the roster. Boston College reported that he hit .319 with a .418 on-base percentage and nearly a .500 slugging percentage in 56 games, adding five home runs, 30 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. The 30 steals ranked fifth in the ACC, and his five triples ranked second in the conference and 19th nationally.That combination — on-base ability, speed, gap power and defensive athleticism — made him an appealing seventh-round pick for Milwaukee in the 2025 MLB Draft. The Brewers selected him 215th overall out of Boston College, and he signed for $237,500.At the time, the profile looked pretty straightforward.Ragsdale was a left-handed hitting outfielder with speed, contact ability and a center-field path if the bat produced enough. The concern was whether there would be enough power for him to profile as more than a fourth outfielder. FanGraphs grouped him before the season among Milwaukee prospects who were “light on power,” noting that he had hit well on the Cape and in a small pro sample but lacked the physicality of a typical corner outfield prospect.Then 2026 happened.Ragsdale opened the year at High-A Wisconsin and handled the level. In 60 games, he hit .327/.447/.528 with 18 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 30 RBIs, 44 walks and 24 stolen bases. Then came the promotion to Double-A Biloxi, where the power spiked in a major way. In 26 games with Biloxi, Ragsdale hit .292/.429/.698 with 12 home runs, 21 RBIs, 23 walks and seven stolen bases. Overall, before the trade, he was hitting .316/.441/.581 with 19 home runs, 51 RBIs, 67 walks and 31 stolen bases in 86 games.That is not empty production.The walks are real. The speed is real. The defensive value is real. The new question is whether the power jump is real too.That is where Ragsdale becomes interesting for the Cardinals.MLB Pipeline’s scouting grades on Baseball Savant show a 45 hit tool, 40 power, 70 run, 40 arm, 55 field and 40 overall grade. That paints the picture of a speed-and-defense outfielder with enough left-handed bat to reach the majors, but not necessarily a middle-of-the-order profile.But scouting reports are snapshots, not tombstones.Ragsdale’s 2026 performance suggests he may be adding something to the profile. FanGraphs noted in early July that his stock was “way up,” pointing to a good eye and measurable power that had improved from where it was in college and from how it looked during his brief 2025 pro debut. The same evaluation still raised questions about long-term plate coverage and high fastballs, but the overall tone had clearly shifted.That is the balance with Ragsdale.He is not a perfect prospect. He strikes out some. His arm is below average. He may be stretched if asked to profile as a true everyday center fielder, and if he ends up in a corner, the power has to keep coming. Left-handed bats with speed are valuable, but left-handed corner outfielders without impact power can get squeezed fast.Still, there is a lot here to like.Ragsdale has shown a mature strike-zone approach. He is not just swinging his way into good numbers. He is drawing walks, forcing pitchers into the zone and using his speed once he gets on base. In 2026, he produced a .441 on-base percentage across High-A and Double-A, and his 67 walks show a hitter with an actual plan.There is also a notable platoon split worth watching. In 2026, Ragsdale hit .331/.448/.641 against right-handed pitching, compared with .262/.415/.354 against left-handers. The on-base ability held up against lefties because of the walks, but the damage came overwhelmingly against right-handed pitching.That does not disqualify him. It just helps define the development plan.For the Cardinals, the goal should be simple: keep him in center field as long as possible, let the speed and on-base skills play, and find out whether the power spike is a true step forward or a hot stretch. His Double-A assignment at Springfield should provide a good test. If the bat continues to produce there, Ragsdale could move quickly.Defensively, he brings enough range to remain interesting in center. Baseball Savant’s scouting report describes him as a quality defensive outfielder with impressive closing speed, while noting that his arm strength is limited. It also says he has the wheels, glove and enough left-handed bat to project as a future fourth outfielder in the majors.That may be the safe projection.But the Cardinals did not acquire him because of the safe projection alone.They acquired him because the 2026 version of Josiah Ragsdale looks like a player whose stock is moving. He is walking. He is running. He is defending. He is hitting for average. And now, for the first time as a professional, he is showing real game power.That changes the conversation.If the power settles back down, Ragsdale still has a path as a left-handed fourth outfielder who can play all three spots, steal bases and give a manager useful at-bats off the bench. That has value.But if the power surge is even partially real, the upside climbs. A left-handed hitting outfielder who can play center, post strong on-base numbers, steal bases and drive the ball over the fence is no longer just organizational depth. That is a legitimate big-league piece.This is what makes the May-Romero trade more interesting than it first appeared.Frias gives the Cardinals the long-term thunder. Ragsdale gives them a more advanced player with a chance to impact the system sooner. One is the dream. The other may be the fast riser.The Cardinals need both kinds of prospects.They need the high-ceiling teenagers who can change the future if everything clicks. They also need polished, athletic players who can force their way into the upper minors and provide real competition for roster spots. Ragsdale fits that second category, with enough offensive growth this season to make you wonder if there is more ceiling than originally believed.For now, he should be watched closely at Springfield.Not because he is a finished product.Because he is improving.That is the whole point of player development. They bought upside.In Monday’s intra-division deal with Milwaukee, St. Louis sent right-hander Dustin May and left-handed reliever JoJo Romero to the Brewers for two outfield prospects, Alexander Frias and Josiah Ragsdale. For Milwaukee, the trade was about strengthening a contending roster. For the Cardinals, it was about turning short-term pitching pieces into longer-term talent with real ceiling. Reuters reported that May and Romero were both set to become free agents after the season, while Frias and Ragsdale came back to St. Louis as the prospect return.Frias is the younger, louder, higher-ceiling piece of the deal.The 18-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic signed with the Brewers in January 2025 and quickly became one of the more intriguing young bats in a Milwaukee system already known for identifying and developing international talent. Baseball Savant lists Frias at 6-foot-2 and 177 pounds, batting left-handed and throwing right-handed, with a profile that immediately stands out for his age, frame and raw power potential.His first season in professional baseball was solid. In 32 games, he hit .441/.518/.678 with four home runs, 34 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. That kind of production forced a promotion to Low-A Wilson, where the numbers came back to earth, but not in a way that should scare the Cardinals. Across 28 games in the Carolina League, Frias hit .236/.328/.418 with four home runs and 28 RBIs. Overall in 2026, before the trade, he had produced a .342/.427/.553 slash line with eight home runs, 62 RBIs and 19 stolen bases across 60 games.That is the proper way to read Frias right now. The complex-league numbers show the upside. The Low-A adjustment shows the work still ahead.The tools are what make him interesting.MLB Pipeline’s scouting grades give Frias a 45 hit tool, 55 power, 50 run, 60 arm and 50 field, with an overall 40 grade. Those grades tell the story of a young corner-outfield profile with power and arm strength leading the way. The bat is not yet a finished product, but the raw ingredients are there.The carrying tool is the power.Frias has already produced exit velocities as high as 117 mph, which is rare thunder for any teenager, much less one who is still filling out physically. Baseball Savant’s scouting report noted that his swing can be a little flat, which keeps too many of those hard-hit balls on the ground instead of turning them into consistent damage in the air. That is the development challenge. The ball comes off his bat hard enough. The next step is learning how to lift it more consistently without turning himself into a pull-happy, swing-and-miss guesser.FanGraphs is even more aggressive on the ceiling. In its 2026 pre-trade deadline Top 100 update, FanGraphs ranked Frias No. 42 overall with a 50 future value grade and a dramatic upward trend arrow. Their hitter data listed him with a 116.3 mph max exit velocity, a 105.3 EV90, a 46.7 percent hard-hit rate and only a 3-degree average launch angle. That data captures both the dream and the concern in one line: the contact quality is huge, but the swing plane still needs refinement. That is where the Cardinals’ player development staff comes in.Frias does not need to be turned into something he is not. He needs to be developed into the best version of what he already is: a left-handed bat with premium impact potential, enough athleticism to handle the outfield and the arm strength to profile in right field. The Cardinals should not rush him. They should not over-coach the explosiveness out of the swing. The job is to add polish without sanding off the very thing that makes him special.Defensively, Frias has experience in all three outfield spots, but right field appears to be the most natural long-term fit. Baseball Savant’s report noted that he does not project to have the speed needed to remain in center field, but his arm strength makes him a strong fit in right. The Cardinals assigned him to Palm Beach after the trade, which puts him in the Florida State League and gives St. Louis a chance to begin working with him immediately in its own development system.There is risk here, and it should not be ignored.Frias is 18. He has played only 28 games above the complex level. He has not yet proven that the bat will play against more advanced pitching over a long season. He has loud exit velocity numbers, but loud contact alone does not make a major-league hitter. There are plenty of young hitters who can light up a radar gun in batting practice and still struggle once pitchers find holes in the swing.But this is exactly the kind of risk the Cardinals should be taking right now.Trading Dustin May and JoJo Romero was not about filling a need for September. It was about converting short-term pieces into long-term upside. May gave the Cardinals innings and flashes of quality. Romero gave them a dependable left-handed bullpen arm. But neither was likely to be part of the next great Cardinals team. Frias might be.That does not mean he is a sure thing. He is not. Prospects this far away rarely are.But Frias has the kind of raw ability that can change the complexion of a farm system if it clicks. He brings size, youth, left-handed power, arm strength and real underlying data to support the scouting buzz. That is not a throw-in. That is a legitimate prospect.The Cardinals have spent the last year talking about building a sustainable core. Deals like this are how that process begins to take shape. Not every prospect acquired at the deadline will become a big-league regular. Some will stall. Some will get exposed. Some will become names we barely remember.Frias has a chance to be different.He is not arriving in St. Louis as a finished product. He is arriving as a projectable, high-upside outfielder with thunder in the bat and plenty to learn. The Cardinals are betting on the body, the bat speed and the power projection. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Liberatore, Ninth-Inning Rally Lift Cardinals Past Blue Jays St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals needed something good to happen Sunday afternoon in Toronto.Matthew Liberatore gave them six innings of it.Then, after the Blue Jays tied the game late and threatened to send the Cardinals toward another frustrating finish, the offense finally answered with the kind of ninth inning that has been missing too often.St. Louis scored four times in the top of the ninth and beat Toronto, 5-1, at Rogers Centre, avoiding a sweep and closing the series with a much-needed win.It was not an offensive masterpiece from start to finish.For most of the afternoon, it looked like another Cardinals game being played on the thinnest possible margin. One run. One mistake. One swing. One late inning deciding everything.But this time, St. Louis got the late inning.This time, the Cardinals finished.That matters.Liberatore set the tone with one of his best starts of the season. The left-hander worked six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, walking one and striking out seven. He threw 85 pitches, 56 for strikes, and gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed after dropping the first two games of the series.He attacked the zone.He missed bats.He kept Toronto from building anything.For a pitcher who has had an uneven season, this was the kind of outing that reminds you why the Cardinals keep trying to build something with him. Liberatore was under control, worked ahead often enough, and did not give the Blue Jays the free traffic that usually turns into trouble.Toronto’s lineup never really got comfortable against him.That was the game’s foundation.The Cardinals’ offense gave him one early run, though not much else for most of the day.In the third inning, Nathan Church drew a walk and eventually came around when Lars Nootbaar doubled to left field, giving St. Louis a 1-0 lead. It was a good swing from Nootbaar, a needed two-out run, and enough to let Liberatore pitch from ahead.For a while, that looked like it might be the whole game.Max Scherzer kept the Cardinals quiet beyond that. The veteran right-hander gave Toronto six innings of one-run baseball, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out five. He was not overpowering in the way he once was, but he still knew how to navigate a lineup and keep the Cardinals from adding on.That kept the game tight.Too tight.The Cardinals have lived in that kind of game too often lately. Good pitching, limited offense, and every missed chance feeling larger as the innings move along. Sunday afternoon was heading down that same road.Liberatore gave them six shutout innings.Ryan Stanek worked the seventh and had to deal with immediate trouble when George Springer tripled off the right-field wall. But Stanek escaped, striking out Alejandro Kirk and getting Ernie Clement to foul out to keep the Cardinals in front, 1-0.That was a major moment.At that point, St. Louis was six outs away from salvaging the finale and getting out of Toronto with at least one win. The pitching staff had done its job. The offense had not done much, but the lead was still there.Then came the eighth.George Soriano took over and got the first two outs. But Andrés Giménez singled, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, and Luis Urías ripped a double down the left-field line to tie the game, 1-1.Just like that, Liberatore’s win was gone.Just like that, the Cardinals were back in another late-inning fight.And after the way the last week has gone, it would have been easy for this one to slip away.It did not.The Cardinals finally put together a real rally in the ninth.Masyn Winn started it with a leadoff walk, and Bryan Torres followed with a single to right. That gave St. Louis two runners on with nobody out, and José Fermín came through with the biggest swing of his afternoon, lining a single to center to score Winn and put the Cardinals back in front, 2-1.That was the kind of situational at-bat the Cardinals have needed more often.Church could not get a bunt down, popping it up for the first out, and Blaze Jordan reached on a fielder’s choice that kept the inning alive. The Cardinals were still clinging to a one-run lead when Nootbaar hit a ground ball to second.The Blue Jays had a chance to end the inning.They did not.Urías threw the ball away, allowing Torres to score and pushing the Cardinals’ lead to 3-1. Jordan moved to third, and Nootbaar ended up at second. Saturday, Quinn Mathews made his major-league debut, but the Cardinals again could not generate enough.Sunday could have followed the same script.It nearly did.Instead, Liberatore gave them six shutout innings, the bullpen held the game close, and the offense finally broke through late.That does not erase the problems.The Cardinals still scored only one run over the first eight innings. They still had to wait until the ninth to find separation. They still need more consistent production, especially from a lineup trying to keep the club in the postseason conversation.But a win is a win.And this was a good one because of how it was built.Liberatore gave the Cardinals a starter’s performance worth building around.
