THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Farm Report: Peete Hits for the Cycle, Franklin Deals, Peoria Sweeps Doubleheader St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurSaturday belonged to Tai Peete and the Peoria Chiefs.Peoria swept a doubleheader at Cedar Rapids, moved back to .500 overall, and extended its winning streak to five games. In the second game, Peete delivered one of the best individual performances in the Cardinals’ system this season, going 4-for-4 with a home run, triple, double, single, four RBIs, four runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases.That is a cycle, with power, speed and run production piled on top.Memphis held on late in Jacksonville, Springfield bounced back with a one-run win over Wichita, and Palm Beach lost in extras despite a strong offensive night from Jonathan Mejía.The full-season affiliates finished 4-1 on the day.Memphis Redbirds — Triple-A Overall Record: 60-47 Second Half: 13-19, 9th in the International League West, 8.0 GB Streak: W1Memphis 8, Jacksonville 7Memphis built a big lead, watched Jacksonville make it uncomfortable late, and still found a way to hold on for an 8-7 win.The Redbirds scored one in the first, five in the second and two more in the fifth. That gave them an 8-0 lead before Jacksonville began chipping away with two runs in the sixth and five more in the eighth.Nolan Gorman supplied the loudest swing for Memphis, going 2-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. César Prieto also went deep, hitting his 12th home run of the season and finishing 2-for-4.Joshua Báez doubled, drove in two runs, walked and stole his 17th base. He is now up to 83 RBIs on the season. Graysen Tarlow doubled and drove in his first run, while Brody Moore, Ramon Mendoza and Colton Ledbetter also added hits.On the mound, Pete Hansen gave Memphis 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Durbin Feltman followed with 1.1 scoreless innings. The eighth got messy when Andrew Schultz allowed five runs, but Hancel Rincón came in and helped settle the game, covering the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts.Takeaway: Memphis made it harder than it needed to be, but a win is a win. Gorman’s two-homer game and Báez’s continued run production carried the offense.Springfield Cardinals — Double-A Overall Record: 52-48 Second Half: 21-11, 1st in the Texas League North Streak: W1Springfield 4, Wichita 3Springfield bounced back from Friday’s loss with a 4-3 win over Wichita at Route 66 Stadium.The Cardinals did their damage early. Jesús Báez hit his 13th home run of the season, a three-run shot that gave Springfield the lead in the third inning. Ryan Campos also homered, his 11th of the season, and drove in his 50th run.Those two swings were enough.Dakota Harris singled, walked, stole his 27th base and scored. Rainiel Rodriguez walked and scored, while Deniel Ortiz and Jon Jon Gazdar added hits.On the mound, Chen-Wei Lin gave Springfield 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Domenic Picone followed with 1.2 scoreless innings, and Randel Clemente was excellent over the final two frames, striking out six while keeping Wichita off the board.Springfield pitchers struck out 15 on the night.Takeaway: Springfield got back in the win column and remains alone in first place. Báez supplied the big swing, and Clemente slammed the door with authority.Peoria Chiefs — High-A Overall Record: 50-50 Second Half: 18-16, 5th in the Midwest League West, 3.0 GB Streak: W5Game 1: Peoria 6, Cedar Rapids 5 — 10 innings Game 2: Peoria 13, Cedar Rapids 2 — 7 inningsPeoria had itself a day.The Chiefs finished off Friday’s suspended game with a 6-5, 10-inning win, then came back and hammered Cedar Rapids, 13-2, in the nightcap.In the resumed game, Peoria rallied from an early hole and won in extras. Luis Pino had a big game, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs. Anyelo Encarnación added two hits, two RBIs, two walks and two stolen bases. Jalin Flores doubled and scored, while Cade McGee doubled, drove in a run and scored twice.The pitching headline in the opener belonged to Christian Worley, who threw 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three to help close it out.Then came the second game, and Tai Peete took over.Peete went 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple, a double, four RBIs, four runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases. His fourth hit completed the cycle, and he pushed his season line to .299 with a .983 OPS.That is a ridiculous game.Peete was not alone. Sammy Hernandez went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Jalin Flores drove in three, Jack Gurevitch reached three times and drove in his 43rd run, and Michael Dattalo added two hits and an RBI. Peoria drew nine walks and scored 13 runs on 13 hits.On the mound, Tanner Franklin earned Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day honors by throwing 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, walking none and striking out seven. Dominic Freeberger finished the final 1.2 innings.Takeaway: Peoria is suddenly moving. Five straight wins, back to .500 overall, and Peete delivered a cycle in one of the loudest games of the season.Palm Beach Cardinals — Low-A Overall Record: 52-48 Second Half: standings not included in supplied table Streak: L1Fort Myers 8, Palm Beach 7 — 10 inningsPalm Beach had the lead, lost it late, reclaimed it in extras, and still fell 8-7 to Fort Myers.The Cardinals scored twice in the second, once in the third, once in the fourth and two more in the fifth to build a 6-5 lead. Fort Myers tied it in the seventh, Palm Beach scored in the top of the 10th, but the Mighty Mussels answered with two in the bottom half to win it.Jonathan Mejía gave Palm Beach the big swing, hitting his 12th home run and driving in three. He also scored three runs and walked twice. Trevor Haskins tripled and drove in two, while Alex Birge added an RBI.Miguel Hernández doubled, walked twice and scored. Cristofer Lebrón had two hits and stole two bases. Yairo Padilla stole his eighth base, and Ryan Mitchell stole his 33rd.On the mound, Cade Crossland struck out six over 3.2 innings but allowed five runs, four earned. Joseph King was sharp in relief, throwing two scoreless innings, and Yadiel Batista gave Palm Beach three innings with one run allowed. One earned run.That will play every time.The Final Word Saturday’s farm report belonged to Peoria.The Chiefs swept a doubleheader, pushed their winning streak to five games, moved back to .500 overall, and got a cycle from Tai Peete. Tanner Franklin gave them the pitching performance of the day, and the offense poured it on in the nightcap.Memphis held on for a win. Springfield stayed in first place with another strong pitching night. Palm Beach came up just short in extras.The system went 4-1, but Peoria owned the headline.A doubleheader sweep. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinals Waste Leahy’s Strong Start, Fall to Blue Jays 3-1 St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals keep finding different ways to tell the same story.Good enough pitching.Not enough offense.Friday night in Toronto, Kyle Leahy gave the Cardinals exactly the kind of start they needed to open a road series. He worked six innings, allowed only one run, kept the Blue Jays from building an early lead and gave St. Louis a chance to win a low-scoring game.The Cardinals did not take it.Toronto scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie on a two-run single from Luis Urías, and the Blue Jays beat the Cardinals 3-1 at Rogers Centre.It was another winnable game that slipped away.It was also another night when the Cardinals’ offense did not provide enough support for a quality start.St. Louis finished with one run on four hits. The Cardinals drew three walks, struck out 11 times and went just long enough without a big swing to let the game get away late.That has become the problem.The Cardinals are getting starts they can win with. They are getting bullpen innings that, most nights, should keep them close. They are getting enough from their pitching staff to stay in games.But staying in games is not the same as winning them.Friday night was proof.Leahy was sharp enough to give St. Louis a chance. He worked around traffic, avoided the big inning and gave the Cardinals six innings of one-run baseball. Toronto had baserunners, but Leahy did not let the Blue Jays turn those chances into real separation.That was the job.He did it.The Cardinals’ offense did not.Dylan Cease started for Toronto and gave the Blue Jays six innings of one-run ball. The Cardinals had a few chances against him, but they never sustained enough pressure to knock him out of control. Cease allowed three hits, walked three and struck out seven, keeping St. Louis from turning traffic into damage.The Cardinals finally broke through in the fifth.Nathan Church singled and gave St. Louis a chance from the bottom third of the order. JJ Wetherholt reached, and Jordan Walker followed with the Cardinals’ biggest swing of the night, a single to shallow center that brought Church home and gave St. Louis a 1-0 lead.For a moment, it looked like that might be enough.With Leahy on the mound and the Blue Jays still scoreless, the Cardinals had the kind of formula they needed. Scratch out a run, ride the starter, shorten the game and let the bullpen protect it.But one run is a dangerous way to live.The Blue Jays tied it in the sixth.Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached, and Kazuma Okamoto drove a double to deep left field, scoring Guerrero and evening the game at 1-1. Leahy kept the inning from getting worse, but the lead was gone.Still, the game was there.A 1-1 score on the road in the late innings is not a disaster. It is a chance. But it requires the offense to find another run, and the Cardinals never did.That is what made the eighth inning hurt.The Cardinals had already let several quiet innings go by after Walker’s RBI single. The lineup had not built on the lead. The top of the order had not created much. The middle of the order had not delivered the extra-base hit that could have changed the game.Toronto finally did.In the bottom of the eighth, the Blue Jays put together the inning St. Louis could not. Daulton Varsho and George Springer came around to score when Urías singled to shallow left field, pushing Toronto ahead 3-1.That was the game.Not officially.But it felt that way.The Cardinals did not have enough offense left to answer.That has been the trouble with this team during this stretch. Every mistake feels magnified because the offense is not giving the pitching staff enough cushion. A starter allows one run in six innings, and it still is not enough. A single late inning becomes the difference because the Cardinals are asking their staff to win games with almost no margin.Leahy deserved better.He was not dominant in the loud, overpowering sense, but he was effective. He kept Toronto to one run over six innings, allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three. He gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed from a road starter.The Blue Jays simply got the next big hit.The Cardinals did not.Offensively, St. Louis had very little to work with. Church had two of the Cardinals’ four hits and scored the only run. Walker drove him in. Alec Burleson had the other hit and also drew a walk. Wetherholt walked but went hitless. Iván Herrera was held hitless. Lars Nootbaar, Masyn Winn, José Fermín and Jimmy Crooks were also kept quiet.That is not enough production.Not against Cease.Not on the road.Not for a team trying to prove it still belongs in the National League Wild Card race.The Cardinals are now back in the hard part of their season, where every loss feels like it carries more weight because the trade deadline is no longer some distant marker on the calendar. It is here. The front office is watching. The standings are being watched. The roster is being judged.And games like this make the questions louder.Can this team score enough?Can the Cardinals win enough low-scoring games to stay alive?Can they keep talking about the Hunt for a Red October when the offense keeps disappearing for long stretches?Friday night did not provide encouraging answers.The Cardinals came into Toronto needing to turn the page after losing three of four to the Cubs at Busch Stadium. They were coming off another frustrating extra-inning loss Thursday afternoon, a game where they had hits but not enough finish.This one was different in shape, but not in result.The Cardinals did not pile up 10 hits and leave the ballpark angry about all the runners stranded. They simply did not create enough. Four hits. One run. Eleven strikeouts. That leaves almost no room for error.The pitching staff kept the game close.The offense left it there.Cease deserves credit. He was sharp. He made big pitches. He kept the Cardinals from stringing together much of anything. Toronto’s bullpen followed him and finished the job, holding St. Louis scoreless the rest of the way.But from the Cardinals’ side, the frustration is obvious.This club cannot keep wasting starts like this.Leahy gave St. Louis six innings of one-run ball. That should travel. That should play anywhere. That should give a team a real chance to win, especially in a game that remained tied into the eighth inning.Instead, the Cardinals let another one slide away.Toronto did not overpower St. Louis.The Blue Jays simply got the swing that mattered.Okamoto tied the game in the sixth. Urías won it in the eighth. The Cardinals’ only answer was Walker’s single in the fifth.That was not enough.Now the Cardinals have to regroup quickly, with Quinn Mathews expected to make his major-league debut Saturday in Toronto. That start will bring plenty of attention, and rightfully so. Mathews has earned the opportunity, and the Cardinals need a lift.But they also need runs.A debut can create excitement. It cannot fix an offense by itself.The Cardinals still have to hit.They still have to finish innings.They still have to stop wasting the kind of pitching performances that should lead to wins.Friday night was another missed chance. Leahy gave them a quality start. Walker gave them an early lead. Church reached twice and scored. But the lineup did not do enough before Toronto finally broke through late.The Blue Jays beat the Cardinals 3-1.And once again, the Cardinals walked away from a game they had enough pitching to win. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE The Future Arrives as Quinn Mathews Makes His MLB Debut St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurFor a St. Louis Cardinals club that has spent much of the past several weeks searching for something to feel good about, Saturday afternoon offers a welcome change.Quinn Mathews is coming to the Major Leagues.The 25-year-old left-hander will make his MLB debut this afternoon when the Cardinals face the Toronto Blue Jays in the second game of their three-game series at Rogers Centre.First pitch is scheduled for 2:07 p.m. CT.Mathews will oppose veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman. The game will be televised on Cardinals.TV and carried on KMOX and the Cardinals Radio Network.St. Louis Cardinals: LHP Quinn Mathews, MLB debut Toronto Blue Jays: RHP Kevin Gausman, 4-10, 4.51 ERA, 123 strikeoutsThe Cardinals enter the game at 54-56 after losing Friday night’s series opener, 3-1.Kyle Leahy continued his outstanding run, holding Toronto to one run over six innings while allowing six hits and one walk. He struck out three and lowered his ERA to 3.44.Once again, the starting pitcher gave the Cardinals every reasonable opportunity to win.Once again, the offense failed to provide enough support.Jordan Walker’s two-out RBI single in the fifth inning accounted for the Cardinals’ only run against Toronto ace Dylan Cease. The game remained tied until the Blue Jays scored twice late, handing St. Louis its fourth loss in five games.The Cardinals have now lost 11 of 15 since the All-Star break.They are two games below .500, drifting farther from the final National League Wild Card position and approaching Monday’s trade deadline with more questions than answers.Mathews cannot fix all of that in one afternoon.He should not be asked to.Today should be about allowing one of the organization’s most anticipated young pitchers to begin his Major League career without expecting him to rescue a season that has been slipping away around him.But baseball has a way of giving one moment more meaning than originally intended.A strong debut could energize a clubhouse that badly needs it. It could offer Cardinals fans a reason to look forward rather than continuing to relive everything that has gone wrong. It could also begin answering an important question about what the club’s rotation might look like beyond Monday’s deadline.Mathews earned this opportunity.He made 19 starts for Triple-A Memphis this season, posting a 3.13 ERA with 111 strikeouts over 92 innings.Those overall numbers only tell part of the story.Mathews endured a difficult May, when he recorded a 5.85 ERA and continued battling the command problems that had slowed his progression through the organization.He responded by making adjustments rather than allowing the season to escape him.His ERA dropped to 2.05 across five June starts. He was even better in July, producing a 1.04 ERA over four outings while completing at least six innings each time.Over his final 10 Triple-A starts, Mathews posted a 1.59 ERA.His final appearance for Memphis left little doubt that he was ready for the next challenge.Mathews threw seven scoreless innings against Durham, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out a season-high 10.There was nothing left to prove by making another start in Memphis.The Cardinals needed to see how his pitches would play against Major League hitters, and Mathews needed the opportunity to show them.That opportunity arrives today.Mathews’ path to the Major Leagues has not been as direct as it appeared it might be two years ago.The Cardinals selected him in the fourth round of the 2023 draft out of Stanford, where he became nationally known for throwing 156 pitches in a complete-game victory during the NCAA Tournament.That performance immediately established his competitiveness and durability, although no one should expect any modern Major League organization to let him approach that workload again.Mathews moved quickly through the Cardinals system in 2024, pitching at four levels and finishing the season with Memphis.He posted a 2.76 ERA over 143⅓ innings and led Minor League Baseball with 202 strikeouts. His combination of performance, durability and swing-and-miss stuff made him one of the fastest-rising pitching prospects in baseball.Then came a more difficult 2025 season.Mathews dealt with left shoulder trouble, diminished fastball velocity and mechanical inconsistency. He finished with a 3.93 ERA over 94 innings, and the expected push toward St. Louis was delayed.The early portion of this season presented another challenge.His command remained inconsistent, and too many deep counts prevented him from working as efficiently as the Cardinals wanted.But development is not always a straight climb from one level to the next.Sometimes it requires a player to struggle, adjust and prove that the answer to adversity is more work rather than less confidence.Mathews did that.He arrives in Toronto pitching better than he has at any point since his dominant 2024 season.The first thing Cardinals fans should watch is his fastball command.Mathews does not need triple-digit velocity to miss bats. His fastball plays because of its life and the way it works with the rest of his arsenal. When he locates it near the top of the strike zone, hitters must respect it.That allows his changeup and slider to become more effective.The changeup may be his most important weapon today, particularly against Toronto’s right-handed hitters. It gives him a pitch that moves away from the barrel and can produce swings over the top when hitters begin gearing up for the fastball.His slider provides another swing-and-miss offering, especially when he stays ahead in the count and can expand the strike zone.The challenge will be throwing enough strikes to use all three pitches effectively.Mathews cannot afford to pitch cautiously simply because this is his debut. Falling behind Major League hitters will force him into predictable fastball counts and increase his pitch total.He needs to trust what brought him here.Attack the strike zone early.Change speeds.Use the entire plate.Make Toronto prove it can handle his best pitches.Mathews has faced some of the Blue Jays’ hitters before, although only in Spring Training.In February 2025, he threw two scoreless innings against Toronto and struck out three, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Mathews used his changeup to disrupt Guerrero’s timing and escape the outing after loading the bases in the second inning.Spring Training is not the regular season, and one exhibition appearance from more than a year ago carries little predictive value.Still, it provided an early glimpse of what makes Mathews interesting.He did not become overwhelmed by the situation. He continued thinking through the inning, trusted his pitch mix and found a way out of trouble.That composure will matter today.Toronto’s lineup has not performed as expected this season, but it still contains hitters capable of punishing mistakes.Kazuma Okamoto leads the Blue Jays with 24 home runs and 69 RBI. He provides the most consistent power threat in the middle of the order.Ernie Clement enters batting .292 with 27 doubles and has been one of Toronto’s most dependable hitters. George Springer continues to provide veteran experience and occasional power, while Guerrero remains dangerous despite a disappointing season by his standards.Guerrero is batting .265 with a .344 on-base percentage, but he has hit only six home runs.Mathews cannot allow those season numbers to make him careless.Guerrero remains capable of changing a game whenever a pitcher leaves something over the plate. The safest way to handle him is not to pitch around him automatically, but to avoid becoming predictable.The Blue Jays also have enough speed and contact throughout the lineup to create difficult innings if Mathews issues walks.That makes controlling the running game and fielding his position important parts of the afternoon.The Cardinals should not expect seven innings from a pitcher making his debut.Mathews has regularly worked deep into games at Memphis, but the intensity and stress of Major League innings are different. Oliver Marmol and pitching coach Dusty Blake must balance giving him an opportunity to compete with recognizing when the bullpen needs to take over.The organization should not determine his workload solely by the inning.Watch the quality of his pitches.Watch his command.Watch whether Toronto’s hitters are beginning to see the ball more comfortably the second or third time through the order.A rookie should be allowed to work through reasonable trouble.He should not be left on the mound simply to satisfy an arbitrary innings goal.The Cardinals also need to give Mathews some offensive support.That has become an increasingly frustrating request.St. Louis scored one run Friday despite receiving another quality start. The club has repeatedly wasted strong pitching performances during the second half because the lineup has failed to create sustained pressure.Walker delivered the only run Friday and continues to carry too much responsibility in the middle of the order.Alec Burleson, Iván Herrera and JJ Wetherholt must help create traffic and damage around him.The Cardinals cannot allow Gausman to work with a lead and settle into a comfortable rhythm.Gausman enters with an unimpressive 4-10 record, but his record says as much about Toronto’s season as it does about his performance.The veteran right-hander owns a 4.51 ERA and has struck out 123 batters. In his most recent start, he allowed three runs over six innings while striking out six against Boston.His fastball and splitter remain the foundation of his approach.Gausman will elevate the fastball and use the splitter below the strike zone to produce swings and misses. Hitters who fail to recognize the pitch early can spend the afternoon chasing balls that appear hittable before disappearing beneath their bats.The Cardinals must resist that temptation.They should be aggressive against fastballs in the strike zone but disciplined enough to force the splitter up. A splitter below the knees is rarely a pitch that can be driven, no matter how inviting it appears on the way to the plate.Gausman has experience, command and an understanding of how to navigate a lineup.The Cardinals cannot help him by expanding the zone or producing weak contact early in counts.They must force him to throw strikes and capitalize when he does.That responsibility is especially important today.Mathews will already be dealing with the emotion and adrenaline of his first Major League start. The worst thing the offense can do is ask him to pitch as though one mistake will decide the game.Score early.Create some breathing room.Allow the rookie to attack Toronto rather than trying to protect a scoreless tie from the opening inning.The timing of Mathews’ promotion is also impossible to separate from the trade deadline.The Cardinals have said he is joining the rotation for this turn rather than immediately replacing another starter.That may be technically true today.It may not remain true by Monday evening.Dustin May continues to draw trade interest after throwing five scoreless innings against the Cubs on Wednesday. His teammates’ reaction when he left that game suggested they understood it might have been his final appearance in a Cardinals uniform.Adding Mathews this weekend allowed the Cardinals to push back the rest of the rotation and avoid having May scheduled to pitch Monday, the day of the deadline.That gives the front office flexibility to complete a trade without leaving another sudden hole in the rotation.It also gives Mathews an opportunity to demonstrate that he is ready to remain.This should not be treated as a one-day promotional event.The Cardinals need to learn what they have.They have spent years talking about rebuilding the pitching pipeline and producing more homegrown starters. Mathews represents the first significant arrival from that effort.More young arms are coming.Liam Doyle, Jurrangelo Cijntje, Mason Molina, Jacob Odle and others may eventually follow.But Mathews is here now.His debut provides the Cardinals with an early look at how their future rotation might begin taking shape.That future should not excuse losing in the present.Development and winning are not competing goals. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Player of the Day: Leo Bernal Homers, Doubles for Memphis St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurLeo Bernal gave Memphis the best offensive line in the system Friday night, even if the Redbirds could not turn it into a win.Bernal is the Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day after going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and one run scored in Memphis’ 9-5 loss to Jacksonville.His final line: 2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI, RBernal’s home run was his 14th of the season, and the two RBIs pushed him to 64. He also added his 18th double, giving Memphis one of its few steady offensive answers in a game where the Redbirds had enough power to stay close but not enough pitching to finish it.Memphis hit three home runs on the night. Victor Scott II hit his second of the season, Thomas Saggese added his eighth, and Bernal joined the group with a home run of his own.The Redbirds actually jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding another in the third. They later scored in the sixth and ninth, but Jacksonville answered with a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and eighth to take control.Bernal did his part.He reached with two extra-base hits, drove in two runs and continued what has been a productive season at the Triple-A level. After Friday’s game, Bernal is hitting .278 with an .851 OPS, and his offensive profile continues to look stronger as the season moves along.That matters, especially for a catcher.Power from behind the plate is always valuable, and Bernal has shown he can provide it. The 14 home runs and 64 RBIs are not empty numbers. He has been a run producer in the Memphis lineup, and Friday was another example.The loss itself was frustrating for Memphis. The Redbirds’ pitching staff walked 10 batters, and that is a hard number to survive. But in the middle of a tough second-half stretch, Bernal’s bat was still worth highlighting.A home run. A double. Two RBIs. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Pitcher of the Day: Liam Doyle Strikes Out 10 With No Walks St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurLiam Doyle gave Springfield the kind of outing that deserves attention, even on a night when the final score went the other way.Doyle is the Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day after striking out 10 over 5.2 innings in Springfield’s 6-1 loss to Wichita on Friday night at Route 66 Stadium.His final line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 KDoyle allowed just one earned run, gave up four hits and did not walk a batter. The no-walk part may be the most encouraging piece of the whole line. For any young pitcher, but especially one with swing-and-miss stuff, filling the strike zone changes everything.On Friday, Doyle did exactly that.He threw 85 pitches, 59 for strikes, faced 21 batters and struck out nearly half of them. Wichita managed a run in the fourth inning, but Doyle kept the game within reach and handed the ball to the bullpen with Springfield still very much alive.The Cardinals’ offense could not answer. Springfield was held to one run on six hits, and the club’s seven-game winning streak came to an end. But Doyle’s start should not get buried under the loss.This was the type of outing the Cardinals want to see from one of their top arms.The strikeout ability has never been in question. Doyle has the stuff to miss bats, and Friday showed that clearly. What made this performance stand out was the combination of strikeouts and control. Ten punchouts with zero walks is not just impressive. It is the kind of line that points in the right direction developmentally.Springfield got singles from Rainiel Rodriguez, Won-Bin Cho, Zach Levenson and Tre Richardson III, while Deniel Ortiz doubled and scored the only run. Levenson drove him in during the ninth inning, but by then Wichita had already built the lead.After Doyle exited, Wichita did its damage late. Darlin Saladin allowed two runs in 1.1 innings, Nolan Sparks gave up a solo homer in the eighth, and Jack Findlay allowed two more in the ninth.Still, the pitching headline belonged to Doyle.No walks. Ten strikeouts. One earned run.That will play at any level.For Springfield, the loss ends a strong winning streak, but the Cardinals remain in first place in the Texas League North. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Farm Report: Doyle Strikes Out 10, Bernal Homers, Palm Beach Wins Its Third Straight St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurFriday’s farm report was a mixed bag across the Cardinals’ full-season affiliates.Memphis lost in Jacksonville despite three home runs, Springfield saw its seven-game winning streak snapped despite a strong start from Liam Doyle, Peoria’s game was suspended in the third inning, and Palm Beach continued to play well with a 2-1 win over Fort Myers.The completed affiliates finished 1-2, with Peoria set to resume its suspended game Saturday.The top offensive performance belonged to Leo Bernal, while Liam Doyle earned Pitcher of the Day honors after striking out 10 in Springfield’s loss.Memphis Redbirds — Triple-A Overall Record: 59-47 Second Half: 12-19, 9th in the International League West, 8.0 GB Streak: L2Jacksonville 9, Memphis 5Memphis had enough offense to stay in the game, but the pitching staff could not contain Jacksonville in a 9-5 loss Friday night.The Redbirds scored twice in the first, added a run in the third, another in the sixth and one more in the ninth. They finished with nine hits and three home runs, but Jacksonville answered with six runs between the sixth and eighth innings to take control.Leo Bernal had the best offensive night for Memphis, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Brycen Mautz allowed three runs in one-third of an inning, and Cade Winquest later allowed three more over 1.2 innings.Takeaway: The power showed up, but 10 walks are hard to survive. It will resume Saturday at 4:35 p.m., followed by a seven-inning game as part of a doubleheader.Rain had already delayed first pitch by 38 minutes, and heavy rain later forced the suspension.Cedar Rapids scored twice in the first inning on back-to-back solo home runs from Eduardo Tait and Danny De Andrade. Peoria had chances offensively but stranded one runner in each of the first three innings.Through two innings, Peoria starter Jack Martinez had allowed two runs on five hits, with one walk and one strikeout. Cedar Rapids starter Dasan Hill had struck out six and walked none through three innings.Takeaway: No completed box score, so Peoria’s report will carry into Saturday. The Chiefs entered the night at .500 in the second half and riding a three-game winning streak.Palm Beach Cardinals — Low-A Overall Record: 52-47 Second Half: 19-14, 2nd in the Florida State League East, 1.5 GB Streak: W3Palm Beach 2, Fort Myers 1Palm Beach kept rolling with a 2-1 win over Fort Myers, giving the Cardinals their third straight victory.This was a pitching win.Palm Beach allowed only two hits and did not give up an earned run. The staff walked nine, so it was not spotless, but the Cardinals made pitches when they had to and kept Fort Myers from cashing in.Brandon Clarke started and worked two hitless innings, allowing one unearned run with four walks and three strikeouts. Gabriel Chinchilla was excellent in relief, throwing four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, walking three and striking out seven. Liam Best added a scoreless inning, and Nelfy Ynfante finished the final two innings without allowing a hit.Palm Beach struck out 13 Fort Myers hitters.The offense did just enough. Trevor Haskins hit his ninth home run of the season and drove in a run. Jonathan Mejía added an RBI single, giving him 50 RBIs on the season. J.P. Cabrera went 2-for-4 and stole his first base. Ryan Weingartner doubled, while Brayden Smith singled, walked and stole his 28th base.Takeaway: Palm Beach’s pitching staff bent but did not break.
