His weekly line was sharp across the board: 6.0 innings, three hits, no runs, one walk, six strikeouts, a 0.00 ERA, and a 0.67 WHIP.That will win you the week.More importantly, it continued a dominant June stretch for the 25-year-old left-hander. Mathews opened the month with back-to-back scoreless starts, giving him 12 consecutive scoreless innings over two outings. He struck out nine on June 4 against Louisville, then followed it with six more strikeouts on June 11 against Norfolk.That is 15 strikeouts over 12 shutout innings.For a pitcher with Mathews’ profile, the strikeouts have never been the question. He is becoming one of the more interesting offensive stories in the Cardinals’ Double-A system.The Springfield Cardinals infielder has been named the Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Player of the Week after a strong seven-day stretch in which he hit .429 with a 1.282 OPS, two home runs, five RBIs, five runs scored, four walks, and three stolen bases.Harris played in six games during the week and went 9-for-21 at the plate. He added a double, showed extra-base impact, controlled the strike zone, and brought value on the bases. That combination made him the clear standout among Cardinals minor league hitters over the past week.The production continues what has been a notable 2026 season for the 24-year-old infielder. Harris opened the year in historic fashion, hitting three home runs in the first two games of the season, including consecutive-game grand slams — the first time that had been done in Springfield Cardinals history.That kind of start gets attention. ARMCHAIR GM — The Cardinal Chronicle Trade Rumors and the Case for Joe Ryan St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals have worked themselves into one of the most fascinating trade-deadline positions in baseball.They are not supposed to be here.This was supposed to be a transition season. A reset season. A year where Chaim Bloom cleared payroll, moved veteran contracts, evaluated young players and built toward something bigger down the road. After the offseason departures of Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray and Brendan Donovan, most national expectations had the Cardinals taking a step back before they took a step forward.Instead, the Cardinals are right in the middle of the National League playoff picture.That changes the conversation.It does not mean Bloom should suddenly shove every prospect into a wheelbarrow and sprint toward the first big name on the market. That is how bad organizations confuse opportunity with panic. But it also does not mean the Cardinals should pretend this season does not matter.Winning still counts in St. Louis.That is why this deadline should not be framed as simply buying or selling. The Cardinals may need to do both.They can sell from certain areas of the roster while buying in the one area that matters most.Starting pitching.That is where Joe Ryan enters the conversation.The Minnesota Twins right-hander is the kind of pitcher who should immediately get the Cardinals’ attention if Minnesota decides to open the door. That remains the important qualifier. Ryan is not clearly available today. The Twins have not exactly hung a “For Sale” sign around his neck. But if Minnesota’s season continues drifting in the wrong direction, and if the Twins decide to take a harder look at their long-term roster picture, Ryan is exactly the type of arm Bloom should be checking on.Not because he is a rental.Because he is not.That is the whole point.The Cardinals do not need to spend prospect capital on a two-month patch unless the price is modest. A rental starter can help, but he does not fit the larger plan unless the cost is low. Ryan is different. He would not just help the 2026 Cardinals try to reach October. He would help the 2027 Cardinals and give the front office a legitimate upper-rotation piece while the next wave of young pitching continues to mature.That is the kind of move worth discussing.Ryan is not just pitching well. He is pitching like a dependable top-half starter. He misses bats. He throws strikes. He works with a starter’s profile, not a bullpen arm stretched out and dressed up as something else. His strikeout numbers are strong, his WHIP is excellent, and his track record is no longer a short sample.The Cardinals have spent years looking for stable, controllable starting pitching. Ryan checks that box.He is also the kind of pitcher who fits what this club needs right now.St. Louis has had encouraging rotation work from Dustin May, Michael McGreevy and others, but this is still not a staff so deep that Bloom can sit back and act satisfied. If the Cardinals want to be taken seriously beyond simply sneaking into a Wild Card spot, they need another starter capable of giving them real innings against real lineups.Ryan would do that.This is not fantasy baseball collecting. This is roster construction.The Cardinals can build around young position-player talent. Jordan Walker looks like he is taking the kind of step forward that changes the shape of a lineup. Masyn Winn gives them a foundation at shortstop. JJ Wetherholt is already part of the present and future. Alec Burleson has become more than a supporting piece. Ivan Herrera has value. The lineup is no longer just a wish list.But young lineups need pitching.They always have.That is why Ryan makes more sense than chasing a short-term bat or adding another middle reliever while pretending the rotation has been solved. A dependable starter raises the floor of the entire club. He protects the bullpen. He shortens losing streaks. He gives the Cardinals a better chance to survive the part of the schedule where depth gets exposed.Every good Cardinals team most of us remember had pitchers who could take the ball and calm things down.That still matters.Now, the cost is where this gets tricky.Joe Ryan would not be cheap. Nor should anyone expect him to be. If the Twins make him available, they will be selling control, performance and postseason value. That combination brings a crowd. The Cardinals would not be bidding against themselves.That is where Bloom has to be disciplined.The Cardinals should absolutely call. They should absolutely listen. They should absolutely explore whether there is a deal to be made. But they should not let Minnesota turn this into a hostage exchange involving the very core St. Louis is trying to build around.There are names that should not be in this conversation.JJ Wetherholt should not be in it. Jordan Walker should not be in it. Rainiel Rodriguez should not be casually tossed into it. Liam Doyle should not be treated like loose change. The Cardinals did not spend the offseason rebuilding the talent pipeline just to empty it in June because the standings got interesting.But that does not mean Bloom has nothing to offer.This is where the “buy and sell” deadline idea becomes important.If the Cardinals are willing to move players from the major league roster, the conversation changes. Lars Nootbaar is the obvious name. He is not a rental, which is exactly why his value would be meaningful. A healthy Nootbaar has on-base ability, defensive versatility, left-handed balance and team control. Those are the kinds of traits other organizations value, especially teams trying to build beyond one season.Trading Nootbaar would not be painless.It should not be.Good trades hurt a little. If they do not, the other club probably did not have much reason to say yes.But if the Cardinals can use a position-player surplus or a controllable outfielder to help acquire controllable starting pitching, that is a conversation worth having. Bloom already showed with the Brendan Donovan trade that he is willing to move a good player if the return strengthens the long-term foundation. The Cardinals turned Donovan into young talent and draft capital. That tells us something about the way this front office thinks.Nootbaar could become the next test of that philosophy.The same applies, in a different way, to the pitching staff.Dustin May and JoJo Romero are natural names in deadline speculation because of their contract situations. Both can help a contender. Both could carry value if the Cardinals decide to cash in on expiring pieces. But here is where the Cardinals’ situation becomes complicated: if they trade May while chasing Ryan, they are not selling out of contention. They are changing the shape of their pitching staff.That may sound strange, but it can make sense.Trading an expiring contract and acquiring a controlled starter is not a retreat. It is a conversion. You are turning short-term value into longer-term value without waving the white flag on the current season.That is exactly the kind of deadline Bloom should be trying to navigate.Riley O’Brien is another difficult case. He has value. He has control. He has late-inning stuff. Teams will call. They always call about relievers, because contending teams lose their minds over seventh, eighth and ninth-inning outs in July.The Cardinals should listen.But listening is not the same thing as shopping.If a contender wants O’Brien badly enough to overpay, Bloom should be willing to have the conversation. But moving a controllable late-inning arm while trying to win in 2026 only makes sense if the return is significant. Not interesting. Significant.That is the standard.Ryne Stanek, depending on how the next several weeks play out, could also become a more traditional deadline piece. Veteran relievers get moved every summer. If his market develops, the Cardinals should be open to it. This is where roster churn and bullpen depth matter. You do not cling to every reliever because he helped you in May. You identify which arms are part of the next good club and which arms can help you go get something else.That is front-office work.But Ryan is the bigger idea.He represents the kind of target that separates real deadline strategy from fan-fiction shopping lists. Every contender would love Tarik Skubal. Fine. Every kid would love a pony, too. The price matters. The fit matters. The likelihood matters. The Cardinals are not in a position where they should be emptying the farm for one superstar arm, no matter how tempting the headline might be.Ryan is different.He is expensive enough to be serious, but not so unrealistic that the conversation becomes pointless. He is good enough to change the Cardinals’ rotation, but not so far outside their timeline that acquiring him would contradict everything Bloom has been building. He would help now and later.That is the lane.The same can be said, to a lesser degree, about Reid Detmers with the Angels. Detmers is another controlled starter who fits the idea of buying pitching without abandoning the future. The Cardinals should be involved on that type of arm as well. But Ryan feels cleaner because the performance and track record are already more stable.The question is not whether Joe Ryan would fit the Cardinals.Of course he would.The question is whether the Twins will sell, and whether Bloom can find a deal that strengthens St. Louis without gutting what he has just started to build.That is the needle.The Cardinals should not treat 2026 like a lost season. The players have done too much to deserve that. The fan base has watched too much losing and organizational drift in recent years to be told that a Wild Card race is merely an inconvenience to the master plan.But the Cardinals also should not act like one good first half means the future can be sacrificed.The right move is in the middle.Sell the short-term pieces if the market overpays. Listen on Nootbaar if the return brings controllable pitching. Do not trade the true core. Do not chase rentals at premium prices. Do not confuse activity with progress.And if Joe Ryan becomes available, make the call.Make several calls.Push hard, but do not get reckless.That is where Bloom’s first real Cardinals deadline could define him. Not by whether he buys or sells, but by whether he understands how to do both at the same time.The old Cardinals model was never supposed to be about choosing between today and tomorrow. It was about building a club strong enough to care about both.Joe Ryan would help today.Joe Ryan would help tomorrow.That is why he belongs near the top of the Cardinals’ trade-deadline board. The Cardinal Chronicle Pallante Gets the Ball as Cardinals Look to Build on May’s Masterpiece St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals opened this series with the kind of pitching performance that can reset a clubhouse, quiet a bullpen phone, and make a manager sleep a little better.Now comes the follow-up.After Dustin May delivered a one-hit, complete-game shutout Monday night in a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres, St. Louis returns to Busch Stadium on Tuesday looking to secure the series and keep the momentum moving in the right direction.First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT, with Andre Pallante getting the ball for the Cardinals against Padres right-hander Michael King.Monday night belonged entirely to May. The right-hander carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, allowed just one hit, struck out nine, walked one, and finished the first complete game of his Major League career. For a Cardinals club that needed stability after a choppy weekend in Minnesota, May gave them more than a win. He gave them a reset.That matters.The Cardinals’ bullpen had been asked to wear a lot lately, and some of those innings were not clean. May took care of that problem himself Monday night. No parade of relievers. No late-inning tightrope. No bullpen scramble. Just one starter taking the baseball, keeping it, and finishing the job.That is old-school baseball, and there is still room for it.Now Pallante gets his turn to keep the line moving.Pallante enters Tuesday at 7-4 with a 3.88 ERA. He has been one of the more important arms in the Cardinals’ rotation, not because every outing is spotless, but because he competes, keeps the ball on the ground, and gives St. Louis a chance when he works ahead. Against a Padres lineup with enough name value and athleticism to punish mistakes, Pallante’s command will be the story.The formula is not complicated. He needs first-pitch strikes, ground balls, and quick innings. He cannot let San Diego build traffic with walks ahead of Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, Xander Bogaerts and the rest of a lineup that still has plenty of danger even while the club has been struggling.San Diego has dropped hard in recent weeks, but that does not make the Padres harmless. It makes them urgent. Teams with expectations do not enjoy being pushed around, and after getting one-hit Monday night, the Padres should come into Tuesday with a sharper edge. The Cardinals should expect a better offensive response.That makes early offense important for St. Louis.The Cardinals did not pile up runs Monday, but they did enough. Jimmy Crooks delivered the biggest swing with a two-run double in the fourth inning, giving May the cushion he needed. Alec Burleson added the third run, continuing to show why his steady bat has become such a valuable part of this lineup.That kind of production is what the Cardinals need again Tuesday. They do not have to turn every night into a fireworks show. But they do need traffic. They need competitive at-bats. They need to make Michael King work.King enters at 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA and 72 strikeouts, giving San Diego a quality arm in Game 2. He has the stuff to miss bats, and if the Cardinals start chasing early, he can turn the evening into a long one. St. Louis needs patience without passivity. Make him throw strikes, but do not let hittable pitches go by just for the sake of running up a count.The Cardinals’ offense continues to have several paths to doing damage.Jordan Walker remains the middle-order power threat who can change the game with one swing. Burleson continues to bring reliable left-handed production. Masyn Winn gives the lineup energy and defense. JJ Wetherholt adds polish and table-setting ability. Crooks showed Monday that he can come through in a run-scoring spot. And Blaze Jordan’s arrival has added another bat worth watching.That depth matters in a series like this.The Padres are too talented to assume Monday’s result will carry itself into Tuesday. May’s masterpiece was special, but it only counts once. The Cardinals still have to come back, play clean baseball, and find a way to win the middle game.That is often the difference between a nice opener and a real series win.For Pallante, the job is to avoid the big inning. For the offense, the job is to keep pressure on King. For the defense, the job is to make every routine play behind a contact-oriented starter. For the bullpen, the job is to be ready, but hopefully not overused.The Cardinals are back at Busch Stadium, and Monday night gave the home crowd something worth remembering. The Cardinal Chronicle Cards Lose Battle of the Bullpens, 5-4 St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals had the lead, the starting pitching, and enough offense to win a tight road game Sunday afternoon at Target Field.What they did not hllpen.The Minnesota Twins rallied late and beat the Cardinals 5-4, taking the rubber game of the weekend series and handing St. Louis a frustrating loss in a game that was sitting there for the taking.This one was not a blowout. It was not a breakdown from the first pitch. It was not one of those games where the Cardinals were chasing uphill all afternoon.That is what made it sting.Michael McGreevy gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed. He worked six innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. It was not overpowering, but it was efficient, composed, and competitive. In a ballpark where the Twins had already shown this weekend they could turn a game sideways in a hurry, McGreevy gave St. Louis a chance to win.For six innings, that looked like enough.Alec Burleson opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field, his 13th homer of the season, giving the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Minnesota answered in the bottom half when Victor Caratini hit a two-run homer to right-center, putting the Twins in front 2-1.The Cardinals came back in the sixth.Nathan Church reached base, and JJ Wetherholt delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon for St. Louis, driving a two-run home run to right field. The blast put the Cardinals ahead 3-2 and continued what has become a steady run of impact from the rookie infielder.Wetherholt was not finished.In the seventh inning, José Fermín singled, Church reached again, and Wetherholt lined a base hit to center to score Fermín and give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead. On the road, with McGreevy’s work already in the books, that should have been the moment St. Louis seized control.Instead, the game turned into a bullpen test.And the Cardinals lost that test.JoJo Romero entered in the seventh and could not hold the two-run lead. The Twins put traffic on the bases, and Byron Buxton singled home Luke Keaschall to cut the lead to 4-3. Royce Lewis followed with a single to left-center, scoring Ryan Kreidler and tying the game at 4-4.George Soriano came in and limited the damage, but the tie had already changed the entire feel of the afternoon.The Cardinals had a chance in the eighth, but Minnesota’s bullpen answered. Andrew Morris struck out Jordan Walker and Lars Nootbaar, allowed a single to Blaze Jordan, then struck out Masyn Winn to end the threat.That inning mattered.In the bottom of the eighth, Soriano got the first two outs. Then Keaschall doubled to left, and Kreidler followed with a double to left-center, scoring Keaschall and giving Minnesota a 5-4 lead.It was a two-out hit, a two-out run, and the decisive blow in a one-run game.The Cardinals went quietly in the ninth. Fermín grounded out, Church struck out, and Wetherholt flied out to deep center as Yoendrys Gomez closed the door for Minnesota.For St. Louis, the offensive highlights were real, but not enough. Wetherholt finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Burleson homered and drove in the other run. Church reached three times with two hits and a walk. Fermín had two hits and scored a run. Blaze Jordan added a hit and continued to look comfortable enough in the big-league box, even as the Cardinals came up short.But the middle of the order had a rough day. Jordan Walker went hitless and struck out three times. Lars Nootbaar went hitless and struck out twice. The Cardinals struck out 11 times overall, and in a one-run game, those empty at-bats add up fast.The final line told the story well enough: Twins 5 runs, 13 hits, 1 error; Cardinals 4 runs, 8 hits, no errors.This was not a game the Cardinals gave away with sloppy defense. It is a brief homestand, but an important one. The Cardinals have been playing winning baseball overall, but the last few days have shown the difference between having momentum and protecting it.That is the line good teams have to learn how to walk.The Cardinals dropped two of three to the Twins, including Sunday’s 5-4 loss in a game that again came down to late-inning execution. That followed Friday night’s chaotic 9-8 loss, a game St. Louis had enough offense to win before the bullpen let it get away. Saturday’s 9-6 victory gave the Cardinals a power-filled answer, but the weekend still ended with the club packing its bags without the series.Now San Diego comes to town, and the Cardinals do not have much time to sit around and chew on what went wrong.The Padres are not the kind of opponent that lets a club coast back into rhythm. San Diego brings athleticism, star power and enough offensive danger to make mistakes expensive. If Cardinals pitchers fall behind, issue free passes or miss in the middle of the plate, San Diego has the bats to make the scoreboard move quickly.For St. Louis, this series starts with Dustin May.May is scheduled to open the series Monday night for the Cardinals, entering at 4-6 with a 4.21 ERA. The numbers do not tell the whole story with May, whose value to this club goes beyond one line on a stat sheet. When he is right, he gives the Cardinals a veteran presence, heavy stuff and a starter capable of helping stabilize a pitching staff that has had to work hard through the past week.That is exactly what St. Louis needs in the opener.The Cardinals do not need May to throw a masterpiece. They need him to work with tempo, pound the zone, keep the ball on the ground and keep the bullpen from being dragged into another long night. The bullpen has had some tough moments lately, and the best way to help it is not with another speech. It is with innings from the rotation.San Diego is scheduled to counter Monday with right-hander Lucas Giolito, who enters at 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA. Giolito is a veteran arm with enough experience to make hitters pay if they get impatient. The Cardinals need to make him work, especially early. Too many quick outs would let San Diego control the shape of the game. Long at-bats, traffic on the bases and pressure from the top of the order should be the plan.Tuesday night brings another important matchup, with Andre Pallante scheduled to start for St. Louis against Padres right-hander Michael King. Pallante enters at 7-4 with a 3.88 ERA and continues to be one of the more important arms in the Cardinals’ rotation. He is not always pretty, but he competes, gets ground balls and gives the Cardinals a chance when he stays in the strike zone.King enters at 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA, giving San Diego a quality arm in the middle game of the series. That matchup may be the most interesting of the three. Pallante’s ability to manage contact against a dangerous Padres lineup could determine whether St. Louis can control the series or spend Tuesday night chasing.Wednesday afternoon closes the series with Kyle Leahy scheduled for the Cardinals. Leahy enters at 5-3 with a 4.64 ERA, while San Diego’s starter remains to be announced. For St. Louis, that finale could become a bullpen-management game depending on how the first two nights unfold. That makes May and Pallante even more important. If they can give the Cardinals length Monday and Tuesday, Leahy’s assignment becomes a lot more manageable.Offensively, the Cardinals still have plenty to like.Alec Burleson has been one of the hottest hitters on the roster, giving St. Louis steady left-handed production and real middle-order damage. Jordan Walker continues to show the power that has changed the shape of his season. Iván Herrera remains one of the better on-base threats in the lineup and has continued to impact games with the bat. And Blaze Jordan has wasted no time giving the Cardinals another reason to watch every at-bat.Jordan’s arrival has added energy to the roster. His first few games in the majors have shown why the Cardinals were willing to give him the opportunity. The bat is loud, the confidence is obvious, and if he can continue to handle third base well enough, his path to regular playing time becomes much more interesting.That matters because the Cardinals are no longer simply trying to survive with the kids.They are trying to win while the kids grow up.That has been one of the defining stories of this season. JJ Wetherholt, Walker, Herrera, Blaze Jordan and others are not being treated as future footnotes. They are being asked to help now. Some nights that comes with mistakes. Some nights it comes with fireworks. The Cardinals have to live with both, because this is what building and competing at the same time looks like.The key against San Diego will be balance.The Cardinals need better late-inning execution than they had in Minnesota. They need cleaner work from the bullpen. They need the rotation to carry more of the load. They need the offense to keep applying pressure instead of waiting for one big swing. And they need to play clean defense against a Padres team athletic enough to turn extra outs into crooked innings.This is also a chance for St. Louis to reestablish Busch Stadium as a place where series do not slip away easily.The Cardinals have done enough to stay in the National League conversation. Now they have to keep proving they belong there. That means responding after a rough weekend. It means beating quality opponents at home. It means turning frustration into sharper baseball instead of letting it become a pattern.The Padres are a real test.That is not a bad thing.Good teams should want the test, especially at home.
