The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Return Home Looking to Reset Against Padres St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals come home needing a reset.After a loud, uneven weekend in Minnesota, St. Louis returns to Busch Stadium on Monday night to open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. It is a brief homestand, but an important one. The Cardinals have been playing winning baseball overall, but the last few days have shown the difference between having momentum and protecting it.That is the line good teams have to learn how to walk.The Cardinals dropped two of three to the Twins, including Sunday’s 5-4 loss in a game that again came down to late-inning execution. That followed Friday night’s chaotic 9-8 loss, a game St. Louis had enough offense to win before the bullpen let it get away. Saturday’s 9-6 victory gave the Cardinals a power-filled answer, but the weekend still ended with the club packing its bags without the series.Now San Diego comes to town, and the Cardinals do not have much time to sit around and chew on what went wrong.The Padres are not the kind of opponent that lets a club coast back into rhythm. San Diego brings athleticism, star power and enough offensive danger to make mistakes expensive. Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts give the Padres a lineup with name value and real impact. If Cardinals pitchers fall behind, issue free passes or miss in the middle of the plate, San Diego has the bats to make the scoreboard move quickly.For St. Louis, this series starts with Dustin May.May is scheduled to open the series Monday night for the Cardinals, entering at 4-6 with a 4.21 ERA. The numbers do not tell the whole story with May, whose value to this club goes beyond one line on a stat sheet. When he is right, he gives the Cardinals a veteran presence, heavy stuff and a starter capable of helping stabilize a pitching staff that has had to work hard through the past week.That is exactly what St. Louis needs in the opener.The Cardinals do not need May to throw a masterpiece. They need him to work with tempo, pound the zone, keep the ball on the ground and keep the bullpen from being dragged into another long night. The bullpen has had some tough moments lately, and the best way to help it is not with another speech. It is with innings from the rotation.San Diego is scheduled to counter Monday with right-hander Lucas Giolito, who enters at 2-1 with a 4.35 ERA. Giolito is a veteran arm with enough experience to make hitters pay if they get impatient. The Cardinals need to make him work, especially early. Too many quick outs would let San Diego control the shape of the game. Long at-bats, traffic on the bases and pressure from the top of the order should be the plan.Tuesday night brings another important matchup, with Andre Pallante scheduled to start for St. Louis against Padres right-hander Michael King. Pallante enters at 7-4 with a 3.88 ERA and continues to be one of the more important arms in the Cardinals’ rotation. He is not always pretty, but he competes, gets ground balls and gives the Cardinals a chance when he stays in the strike zone.King enters at 4-5 with a 3.46 ERA, giving San Diego a quality arm in the middle game of the series. That matchup may be the most interesting of the three. Pallante’s ability to manage contact against a dangerous Padres lineup could determine whether St. Louis can control the series or spend Tuesday night chasing.Wednesday afternoon closes the series with Kyle Leahy scheduled for the Cardinals. Leahy enters at 5-3 with a 4.64 ERA, while San Diego’s starter remains to be announced. For St. Louis, that finale could become a bullpen-management game depending on how the first two nights unfold. That makes May and Pallante even more important. If they can give the Cardinals length Monday and Tuesday, Leahy’s assignment becomes a lot more manageable.Offensively, the Cardinals still have plenty to like.Alec Burleson has been one of the hottest hitters on the roster, giving St. Louis steady left-handed production and real middle-order damage. Jordan Walker continues to show the power that has changed the shape of his season. Iván Herrera remains one of the better on-base threats in the lineup and has continued to impact games with the bat. And Blaze Jordan has wasted no time giving the Cardinals another reason to watch every at-bat.Jordan’s arrival has added energy to the roster. His first few games in the majors have shown why the Cardinals were willing to give him the opportunity. The bat is loud, the confidence is obvious, and if he can continue to handle third base well enough, his path to regular playing time becomes much more interesting.That matters because the Cardinals are no longer simply trying to survive with the kids.They are trying to win while the kids grow up.That has been one of the defining stories of this season. JJ Wetherholt, Walker, Herrera, Blaze Jordan and others are not being treated as future footnotes. They are being asked to help now. Some nights that comes with mistakes. Some nights it comes with fireworks. The Cardinals have to live with both, because this is what building and competing at the same time looks like.The key against San Diego will be balance.The Cardinals need better late-inning execution than they had in Minnesota. They need cleaner work from the bullpen. They need the rotation to carry more of the load. They need the offense to keep applying pressure instead of waiting for one big swing. And they need to play clean defense against a Padres team athletic enough to turn extra outs into crooked innings.This is also a chance for St. Louis to reestablish Busch Stadium as a place where series do not slip away easily.The Cardinals have done enough to stay in the National League conversation. Now they have to keep proving they belong there. That means responding after a rough weekend. It means beating quality opponents at home. It means turning frustration into sharper baseball instead of letting it become a pattern.The Padres are a real test.That is not a bad thing.Good teams should want the test, especially at home. The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Pitcher of the Day: Payton Graham St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurPayton Graham did not get the win Sunday afternoon.He did get something that matters in the minor leagues.A step forward.Graham is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Pitcher of the Day after giving Palm Beach four innings and striking out six in the Cardinals’ 3-1 rain-shortened loss to the St. Lucie Mets at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.The final score did not go Palm Beach’s way, and the loss officially ended the Cardinals’ first-half push in the Florida State League East. But Graham’s outing stood out on a day when the full-season affiliates did not have a dominant pitching line.For Graham, this was a development outing.The right-hander set career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts, giving Palm Beach four innings while allowing two runs. St. Lucie got to him for a solo home run in the second and another run in the third, but Graham kept the Cardinals in the game and showed the kind of swing-and-miss that makes an outing worth tracking.Six strikeouts in four innings will get your attention.That matters, especially for a young pitcher building workload, learning how to handle full-season hitters, and trying to turn flashes into something more consistent. Not every useful pitching performance comes with six scoreless innings and a clean win attached to it. Sometimes the value is in seeing a pitcher stretch out, miss bats, and take on more responsibility.Graham did that Sunday.Palm Beach’s offense could not give him much help. The Cardinals scored their only run in the third inning when Jonathan Mejia doubled, Chase Heath singled, and Mejia came home on a throwing error during a failed pickoff attempt. After that, Palm Beach could not find the hit it needed before the rain ended the game after eight innings.Mason Molina deserves mention for Springfield after settling down from early trouble against Amarillo. Molina struck out six and retired the final seven batters he faced, giving the Cardinals a chance to climb back into the game.Darlin Saladin also deserves mention after throwing 1.2 perfect innings out of the Springfield bullpen.But Graham gets the honor because this outing represented progress. A career-high workload. A career-high strikeout total. The Cardinal Chronicle Minor League Player of the Day: Leo Bernal St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurLeo Bernal helped make sure Memphis finished the road trip the right way.Bernal is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Minor League Player of the Day after going 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI doubles in the Redbirds’ 11-7 comeback win over the Norfolk Tides on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.This was not empty production.Memphis needed every bit of offense it could find. The Redbirds had to battle back, answer Norfolk’s early scoring, and keep adding on late to close out one of their most important series of the first half.Bernal was right in the middle of it.After Bligh Madris gave Memphis a lead with a three-run homer in the second inning, Norfolk pushed back. The game was still there to be taken in the fourth, and that is when Bernal delivered one of the swings that mattered most.Ramón Mendoza tied the game with a two-run double, and Bernal followed with an RBI double of his own to put Memphis ahead for good.That is the kind of hit that changes the feel of a game.Bernal was not finished. He added another RBI double later in the game, reached base four times, and helped Memphis turn a back-and-forth afternoon into an 11-7 win.The Redbirds had contributions up and down the lineup. All nine starters had at least one hit. Victor Scott II, César Prieto, Madris and Mendoza each added two-hit games. Madris drove in three with his home run, and Mendoza drove in two with his double.But Bernal had the best overall line, and his first RBI double came in the inning that put Memphis ahead for good.That earns the honor.The win also carried team significance. Memphis took five of six from Norfolk and now heads home still very much alive in the International League first-half race. At this point in the season, those wins matter. Springfield lost a 5-4 extra-inning game to Amarillo. Peoria fell 10-3 at South Bend in the series finale. Palm Beach dropped a rain-shortened 3-1 game to St. Lucie, officially losing ground as Jupiter clinched the Florida State League East first-half title.It was not a clean day across the system.But Memphis finished its week like a club that knows what is at stake.Memphis Redbirds Record: 43-26, International League West Standings: 1st place, International League West Result: Memphis 11, Norfolk 7Memphis finished the road trip the right way.The Redbirds beat Norfolk 11-7 on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park, closing out a strong week by taking five of six from the Tides. The win moved Memphis to 43-26 and kept the Redbirds in a virtual tie with Rochester in the International League first-half race, though Rochester holds the edge by winning percentage.Memphis had to climb out of trouble early.The Redbirds fell behind, then answered in the second inning when Bligh Madris launched a three-run homer to give Memphis a brief lead. Norfolk responded, but Memphis punched back again in the fourth.Ramón Mendoza tied the game with a two-run double, and Leo Bernal followed with the first of his two RBI doubles to put the Redbirds ahead for good.Bernal had the best offensive day for Memphis, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBI doubles. Victor Scott II, César Prieto, Madris and Mendoza each added two hits as all nine Redbirds starters collected at least one hit.That is a full lineup doing damage.Pete Hansen started for Memphis and had to battle through traffic. The left-hander allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out three.The offense made sure Hansen’s rougher line did not decide the day. Memphis kept adding runs, and Scott Blewett came on in the ninth with two outs and the tying run on deck. Blewett got the ground ball he needed to close it out and earn his fourth save.There are prettier wins.There are cleaner wins.But this was an important one. Memphis finished the series strong, took five of six on the road, and now heads home for a key six-game series against Nashville to close out the first half.Springfield Cardinals Record: 27-35, Texas League North Standings: 4th place, Texas League North Result: Amarillo 5, Springfield 4 — 10 inningsSpringfield had a chance to finish the series with a win, but Amarillo took the finale in extras.The Cardinals fell 5-4 in 10 innings Sunday night at Route 66 Stadium, dropping another close one in a series that had plenty of offense, momentum swings and frustration.Amarillo scored first in the opening inning, but Springfield answered quickly. Rainiel Rodriguez reached, stole second, and came around to score on a Ryan Campos single to right field.The Sod Poodles came back with two runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead, and for a while it looked as if that might be enough. Mason Molina settled in after the rough start, retiring the final seven batters he faced and finishing with six strikeouts.Springfield kept chipping away.The Cardinals scored in the sixth to cut the deficit to one, then came back again in the seventh. Campos delivered again with an RBI single, tying the game, and Miguel Ugueto followed with a sacrifice fly to give Springfield a 4-3 lead.That lead did not hold.Amarillo tied the game in the eighth, and after both clubs went quietly in the ninth, the Sod Poodles used the placed runner in the 10th to push across the deciding run.Springfield had the tying run in position but could not answer in the bottom half.Campos went 2-for-5 with two RBI singles, and Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Darlin Saladin also gave Springfield a strong relief appearance, throwing 1.2 perfect innings.It was a better fight than some of the earlier losses in the series.It was still a loss.Peoria Chiefs Record: 32-31, Midwest League West Standings: 3rd place, Midwest League West Result: South Bend 10, Peoria 3Peoria’s series at South Bend ended with a rough Sunday afternoon.The Chiefs lost 10-3 to the Cubs at Four Winds Field, dropping the series four games to two. South Bend had already clinched a postseason berth, and the Cubs finished the week by winning their sixth consecutive series.For the second straight day, Peoria was in trouble early.Blake Aita could not get out of the first inning after South Bend made him work deep counts throughout the frame. The Cubs opened the scoring on a two-run triple from Jose Escobar and added another run in the second to make it 3-0.Peoria did punch back in the third.Jesús Báez reached on an error, Jack Gurevitch walked, and Jalin Flores tied the game with one swing, driving a three-run homer to left field. The home run was Peoria’s 100th of the season, marking the first time since 2021 that the Chiefs have reached that milestone.That was the highlight of the day for Peoria.The Chiefs’ bullpen held the tie briefly, but South Bend took control in the fifth. After the first two hitters were retired, the Cubs put together a two-out rally, capped by a three-run homer from Miguel Useche to make it 6-3.South Bend added two more runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth, pulling away late.Peoria had its moments in the series. Memphis Takes Series in Norfolk, Bernal Sparks 11-7 Comeback

Cardinal Chronicle The Cardinals Top Prospect Rankings St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals’ prospect board is beginning to move again.This is not a complete rejection of preseason scouting reports, and it is not a hot-sheet ranking built on one good week. But enough baseball has now been played to begin separating steady progress from reputation, current production from projected promise, and players who are moving forward from those still waiting to answer the same old questions.The latest adjustment comes after Jimmy Crooks was promoted to St. Louis, removing one of the organization’s top catching prospects from this board. Crooks earned that move with his production at Triple-A Memphis, and his graduation opens the door for another arm to enter the Cardinal Chronicle Top 30.That arm is Jacob Odle.MLB Pipeline has moved Odle into the Cardinals’ Top 30 at No. 13, but the Cardinal Chronicle is going a little higher. Odle enters this board at No. 11, just outside the Top 10, because the performance, the strikeout rate, the physical profile and the upward movement all support the jump.Our June board still keeps the foundation intact. Rainiel Rodriguez remains at No. 1. Liam Doyle, Joshua Báez, Tanner Franklin and Jurrangelo Cijntje continue to hold prominent spots. Blaze Jordan’s bat has forced him into the upper third of the rankings. And now Odle joins the conversation as one of the more interesting pitching risers in the system.This is what a living prospect board is supposed to do. It should honor the scouting, but it should not be handcuffed to March. By June, performance has a vote.Here is the updated Cardinal Chronicle Top 30.#1 - Rainiel Rodriguez, C, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 2 Rodriguez remains the top prospect on this board because the combination of age, position and production is too strong to ignore. A teenage catcher producing against advanced competition carries premium prospect value. The power has not fully exploded yet, but the offensive foundation is strong, the approach continues to show maturity, and the position makes the profile even more valuable.#2 - Liam Doyle, LHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 1 Doyle remains near the top because the arm still plays at a high level, even if the early numbers have been uneven. The ERA and WHIP have not matched top-prospect expectations, but the strikeout ability is still there. The ranking is driven by upside, fastball quality and left-handed power, but the gap between Doyle and the rest of the upper tier has narrowed.#3 - Joshua Báez, OF, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 3 Báez has done exactly what a power prospect must do at Triple-A: make himself impossible to ignore. The strikeouts are still part of the profile, but the power production at the doorstep of the majors is too loud to treat as a side note. He has moved from interesting to important, and his 2026 season has made him one of the organization’s most relevant bats.#4 - Tanner Franklin, RHP, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 10 Franklin has been one of the biggest pitching risers in the system. His strikeout ability at High-A points to real movement, and MLB Pipeline already gives him one of the better fastball grades in the organization. He is not as close to St. Louis as some others on this list, but the arm has moved into the top tier.#5 - Jurrangelo Cijntje, RHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 4 Cijntje slides slightly on this board, but not dramatically. The Double-A transition has not been clean, but the strikeouts keep the talent in plain sight. The upside remains significant, and switch-pitching is more than a novelty when the stuff backs it up. The current performance keeps him from the very top, but the long-term ceiling remains one of the better ones in the system.#6 - Leo Bernal, C, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 5 Bernal remains a valuable prospect because he is a young Triple-A catcher with switch-hitting ability and defensive value. Crooks may have passed him offensively before earning his promotion, but Bernal still has a strong enough overall profile to remain high on the board. Catchers with this combination of age, level and skill are hard to find.#7 - Brandon Clarke, LHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 8 Clarke holds his spot because the scouting profile still matters. He remains more projection than production at this point, but the ingredients are still there.#8 - Yhoiker Fajardo, RHP, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 12 Fajardo moves up because the strikeout total demands attention. The bat-missing ability is real, and his work at High-A gives the line enough balance to support the rise. The WHIP still needs to improve, but arms that miss bats at that rate are always going to force their way into the conversation.#9 - Quinn Mathews, LHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 6 Mathews drops, but he does not fall out of the Top 10. The Triple-A numbers have been difficult to dress up, especially the walk totals, but the left-handed profile, previous track record and proximity to St. Louis keep him in a meaningful spot. This is a correction, not a write-off. The stuff is still good enough. The command has to catch up.#10 - Blaze Jordan, INF, MLB — MLB Pipeline: No. 25 Jordan is the loudest offensive riser on this board. His Triple-A production demands a major jump, and his bat has become one of the more interesting immediate storylines in the system. The defensive and positional questions keep him from pushing even higher, but the offensive performance has been too strong to leave buried in the back third of the list. At some point, production has to matter. Jordan has produced.#11- Jacob Odle, RHP, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 13 Odle breaks into the Cardinal Chronicle Top 30 at No. 11, and this is not just a reaction to Jimmy Crooks graduating from prospect status. Odle has earned the jump. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has pushed his way into the conversation with a strong strikeout profile, improved prospect standing and a promotion from Palm Beach to Peoria. There is still work to do, and the command profile needs to continue tightening, but the frame, age, stuff and upward movement give him one of the stronger pitching cases in the system. MLB Pipeline moved him to No. 13. This board is going one step further.#12 - Tai Peete, OF, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 17 Peete’s athleticism has started to show up in production. The tools have always been there, but the performance now gives him upward momentum. The strikeout rate remains something to watch, but the overall profile belongs in the upper half of the system.#13 - Tekoah Roby, RHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 9 Roby stays in the middle of the board because the arm still carries prospect weight. The absence of a strong current performance case prevents a move upward, but the previous scouting value is still enough to keep him in the Top 15. This ranking reflects upside more than current momentum.#14 - Brycen Mautz, LHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 20 Mautz moves up because he is getting outs near the majors. The WHIP shows he has had to pitch through traffic, but left-handed arms with Triple-A success deserve attention. He may not have the loudest name on the board, but he continues to build a practical case.#15 - Jack Gurevitch, INF, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 28 Gurevitch has earned one of the bigger jumps on the board. His offensive production is real, and the power has made him much harder to ignore. The next test is whether it holds as he climbs, but his résumé says he belongs in the Top 15.#16 - Cade Crossland, LHP, Single-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 23 Crossland moves up because the strikeouts are difficult to ignore. The ERA needs to come down, but the bat-missing ability is the story. Young left-handers who can miss bats deserve patience, and Crossland has done enough to trend upward.#17 - Ryan Mitchell, OF, Single-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 11 Mitchell slides some because the production has not fully caught up with the projection. The on-base ability is encouraging, and the tools still matter, but this is more future value than current performance right now. He stays in the Top 20, but the bat will have to push him back up#18 - Mason Molina, LHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 29 Molina has pitched his way up the board. His Double-A work has been one of the steadier pitching lines in the system, and he deserves credit for turning results into movement. He may not have the loudest name, but the performance is too strong to leave him near the bottom.#19 - Jesus Baez, INF, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 19 Baez holds close to his MLB Pipeline spot because the power remains his carrying tool. The offensive profile still needs polish, but the impact potential is real. This ranking reflects a bat with upside, but also a player still working through the consistency questions that come with it.#20 - Chen-Wei Lin, RHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 24 Lin remains in the Top 20 because strikeouts at Double-A matter. The stuff is interesting, and the swing-and-miss ability gives him a real case. The command and consistency still have to follow, which is why he does not climb higher.#21 - Yairo Padilla, INF, Single-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 15 Padilla falls in this version because there is not enough current production in this snapshot to justify a higher ranking. The tools and projection still matter, and MLB Pipeline remains higher on him than this board does. For now, this is a conservative placement until the performance case becomes clearer.#22 - Cooper Hjerpe, LHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 16 Hjerpe remains on the board because previous prospect value and left-handed deception still carry weight. Without a current statistical case to push him higher, he settles into the back half of the rankings. Health, innings and command will decide whether he rebounds.#23 - Ixan Henderson, LHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 14 Henderson falls in this reset mostly because others have created stronger current cases. Triple-A proximity matters, especially from the left side, but he has not done enough in this working table to hold his MLB Pipeline spot. This is not a dismissal. It is a performance-board adjustment.#24 - Tink Hence, RHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 14 Hence remains one of the hardest rankings on the board. The name and arm still suggest more than this slot, but the lack of meaningful current momentum leaves little room for an aggressive placement. He stays ranked because the talent has not vanished, but he has to earn his way back up.#25 - Luis Gastelum, RHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 21 Gastelum remains in the back third because he has proximity and usable Triple-A results. The profile looks more like steady depth than fast-rising prospect right now, but pitchers near the majors still carry value.#26 - Braden Davis, LHP, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 26 Davis lands exactly where MLB Pipeline has him, and that feels about right. The strikeout ability keeps him relevant, but the overall line needs to tighten. The arm is still worth following, but the results have to become more stable.#27 - Hancel Rincon, RHP, Triple-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 27 Rincon also matches his MLB Pipeline slot. The Triple-A assignment helps his standing, but the run prevention and WHIP keep him in the back portion of the rankings. This is more of a depth-and-proximity ranking than a breakout endorsement.#28 - Emanuel Luna, OF — MLB Pipeline: No. 18 Luna slides because there is not enough current evidence in this snapshot to hold him near the middle of the list. The prior prospect interest keeps him ranked, but players producing in full-season ball have moved past him for now. He is a hold, not a riser.#29 - Deniel Ortiz, INF, Double-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 22 Ortiz barely holds a spot in this version. There is not enough current offensive production to justify a higher ranking, but previous value keeps him on the board. He is clearly on the edge of the Top 30.#30 - Nate Dohm, RHP, High-A — MLB Pipeline: No. 30 Dohm holds the final spot, but only by a thread. The strikeouts show there is still something in the arm, but the run prevention has been impossible to overlook. If this board were extended to 35 names, he would be in danger of slipping into the watch-list group.The takeaway is simple: the Cardinals’ system is not standing still.Rodriguez has done enough to remain the top prospect on this board. Báez has made Triple-A production impossible to ignore. Franklin has gone from interesting arm to top-five prospect. Jordan, Gurevitch, Molina, Fajardo, Crossland and Mautz have all improved their cases. Cardinals 9, Twins 6 Herrera, Walker, and Blaze Jordan Power Cardinals Past Twins The Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals needed a response after Friday night’s bullpen collapse at Target Field.They got one Saturday afternoon — though naturally, they made sure nobody could fully relax until the final out.The Cardinals defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-6, using four home runs, a big seventh inning, and just enough late-inning relief work to even the three-game interleague series at one game apiece.This one started like it might be a clean getaway.Masyn Winn walked to open the game, and Iván Herrera wasted no time putting St. Louis in front. Herrera launched a two-run home run to left-center field in the first inning, giving the Cardinals a quick 2-0 lead and setting the tone for what would become a power-driven afternoon.The Cardinals added two more in the second. Blaze Jordan, already making his presence felt since arriving in the big leagues, tripled to open the inning. Pedro Pagés followed with an RBI double to right, scoring Jordan and extending the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Winn lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Pagés, and St. Louis had built a 4-0 advantage.For a while, that looked comfortable.Then the Twins started swinging back.Matthew Liberatore worked through the early innings before Minnesota got to him in the fourth. Byron Buxton homered to center, and Royce Lewis followed with a solo shot of his own, cutting the Cardinals’ lead to 4-2.In the fifth, the Twins finished the comeback. After a leadoff walk, Luke Keaschall hit a two-run homer to left, tying the game at 4-4 and ending Liberatore’s afternoon soon after. Liberatore finished with 4.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.It was another start with early promise and middle-inning trouble.But unlike Friday night, the Cardinals had another answer ready.Matt Svanson gave St. Louis exactly what it needed, working 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to settle the game down. That gave the offense time to reload, and in the seventh inning, the Cardinals erupted.Herrera opened the rally with his second home run of the game, a solo shot to left that put St. Louis back in front, 5-4.
