It was the kind of veteran left-handed start that usually sends a club to the handshake line.Instead, it became one of those frustrating pitching lines that looks even better the morning after.Zimmermann controlled the game from the mound. He worked efficiently, limited traffic and kept Charlotte off the scoreboard through six innings. After a long rain delay before first pitch and a shortened seven-inning setup, Zimmermann gave the Redbirds exactly the kind of steady outing they needed.The problem was not on the mound.Memphis managed only two hits and never found a way to push across a run. Noah Mendlinger singled and walked, and Colton Ledbetter added the other Redbirds hit, but the offense never built the kind of inning needed to support Zimmermann’s work.That is the hard part of baseball. A pitcher can do his job almost perfectly and still walk away with nothing to show for it in the win column.But the win-loss record does not tell the story here.Zimmermann extended his strong stretch by allowing three runs or fewer for the sixth consecutive start and for the 12th time in 15 outings this season. Cardinal Chronicle Morning Farm Report St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurSpringfield Walks It Off as Cardinals Affiliates Go 1-2 With One Postponement The St. Louis Cardinals’ full-season affiliates went 1-2 Wednesday night, with Palm Beach postponed by weather and Springfield providing the night’s heartbeat.Memphis wasted a strong start from Bruce Zimmermann in a 2-0 extra-inning loss to Charlotte. Springfield pulled off the comeback of the night, rallying from an 8-4 deficit in the 10th inning to beat Arkansas 9-8. Peoria dropped its third straight game, falling 7-3 to Wisconsin. Palm Beach’s game at Lakeland was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up as part of a Thursday doubleheader.It was not a pretty system-wide night, but Springfield saved it from being a cold one.Memphis Redbirds Charlotte 2, Memphis 0 — 8 innings Memphis: 49-34 overall; 2-6, 10th, International League West, Second HalfMemphis got the pitching. The Redbirds just did not get the bats.The Redbirds were shut out 2-0 by the Charlotte Knights in a rain-delayed, extra-inning game Wednesday night at AutoZone Park. The game was shortened to seven innings after a one-hour, 57-minute pregame rain delay, then went to the eighth scoreless before Charlotte finally broke through.Bruce Zimmermann gave Memphis everything it needed to win. The left-hander worked six shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six. He extended his streak of allowing three runs or fewer to six consecutive starts and 12 of his 15 outings this season.Luis Gastelum followed with a scoreless seventh inning, pushing his own scoreless streak to 16 appearances. That should have been enough to give Memphis a chance to steal one late.Instead, the offense never arrived.The Redbirds managed just two hits. Noah Mendlinger singled in the fourth and walked in the eighth, while Colton Ledbetter added the other Memphis hit with two outs in the sixth. Rainiel Rodriguez delivered the final swing, singling up the middle to complete the comeback and even the series.This was a grown-man win for a young roster.Tre Richardson III got Springfield moving with a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his second homer since joining Double-A. Jesús Báez followed with another loud night, homering in the seventh inning to tie the game at four. It marked his third straight game with a home run, making him the second Springfield player this season to accomplish that feat, joining Won-Bin Cho.Báez was not finished. He went deep again in the 10th inning, his second homer of the night, helping fuel the Cardinals’ comeback from four runs down.Dakota Harris tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the 10th, setting the stage for Rodriguez. The 19-year-old catcher came through with the walk-off single, giving Springfield one of its best wins of the season.Tyler Bradt also made his first appearance for Springfield since April 5 after being sidelined by injury. He threw a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk. Andrew Schultz earned the win, improving to 3-0.Old School Take: Trailing by four in extra innings usually means you start packing the bats. Springfield did not. Báez supplied the thunder, Harris tied it, and Rodriguez finished it. That is a clubhouse win.Peoria Chiefs Wisconsin 7, Peoria 3 Peoria: 36-40 overall; 4-6, 5th, Midwest League West, Second HalfPeoria dropped its third straight game Wednesday night, falling 7-3 to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Dozer Park.Wisconsin continued its hot stretch, using three home runs and a strong start from Ethan Dorchies to control the game. The Timber Rattlers improved to 9-1 since June 20, while Peoria fell to 4-6 in the second half.Yhoiker Fajardo started for the Chiefs and allowed four runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. He walked two and struck out four. Wisconsin struck for solo home runs from Yannic Walther and Daniel Dickinson in the third inning, then added two more runs in the fourth to build a 4-0 lead.Rubén Menes relieved Fajardo in the fifth and gave up Wisconsin’s third solo homer of the night, this one to Luis Castillo, stretching the deficit to 5-0. The Timber Rattlers added another run in the sixth and one more in the eighth.Peoria finally broke through in the sixth when Jack Gurevitch singled in Cameron Nickens. The Chiefs added two more runs in the eighth when Nickens put the ball in play and a Wisconsin error allowed Cade McGee and Ian Petrutz to score.But the Chiefs could not find the big inning.Dorchies held Peoria to one run on four hits over his outing, walking one and striking out seven. It was his second consecutive quality start, and he kept the Chiefs from building any real offensive rhythm.Old School Take: Peoria did not get buried, but it never really grabbed the game either. Wisconsin got the big swings. The Chiefs got traffic, a few late runs and another frustrating loss.Palm Beach Cardinals Palm Beach at Lakeland — Postponed Palm Beach: 40-36 overall; 7-3, 1st, Florida State League East, Second HalfPalm Beach did not play Wednesday night. The Cardinals’ game at Lakeland was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up Thursday as part of a doubleheader.The postponement keeps Palm Beach at 7-3 in the second half and still in first place in the Florida State League East. The Cardinals entered July 2 holding a two-game lead over Daytona in the division.After Tuesday’s 7-1 loss to Lakeland, Palm Beach will now have to regroup with two games in one day. That is never ideal, but first-place clubs have to handle odd schedules, wet fields and long days just like everybody else.Old School Take: A rainout never wins you a game, but sometimes it gives a club a needed reset. It was his third straight game with a home run, making him only the second Springfield player this season to homer in three consecutive games.Rainiel Rodriguez delivered the walk-off single, and that moment deserves its own spotlight. But Báez helped make the comeback possible. The Cardinal Chronicle St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Wild Card Era Has Made October Bigger, Not EasierThe expansion of Major League Baseball’s postseason has created one of the great illusions of the modern game.More teams get invited to October now.That does not mean winning the World Series has become easier.In fact, the opposite may be true.The Wild Card era has given more clubs access to the postseason, more fan bases a reason to believe, and more front offices an excuse to say, “Just get in and anything can happen.” There is some truth in that. Baseball is unpredictable. A hot rotation, a locked-in bullpen, and one lineup catching fire at the right time can change everything.But hope is not the same thing as probability.And opportunity is not the same thing as advantage.For a team like the St. Louis Cardinals, that distinction matters.The Cardinals are in the middle of a season where the temptation is to look ahead, protect the future, and assume that if the club is close now, it should be even better next year. That sounds reasonable on the surface. Young players grow. Payroll flexibility improves. Prospects arrive. The organization gets healthier and deeper.That is the theory.Baseball has a nasty habit of laughing at theories.Postseason windows do not stay open forever. Injuries happen. Pitchers break down. Role players leave. Career-best seasons regress. Young hitters get adjusted to. Division rivals improve. Bullpens turn over. What looks like the start of something in June can look like a missed chance by the following April.That is why taking a postseason opportunity for granted is dangerous.The Wild Card era proves it.During the early Wild Card years, five Wild Card teams won the World Series: the 1997 Florida Marlins, 2002 Anaheim Angels, 2003 Florida Marlins, 2004 Boston Red Sox and 2011 St. Louis Cardinals.That 2011 Cardinals team remains the perfect example of why getting in matters. They did not enter October as the best team on paper. They entered as a dangerous team that survived long enough to become a championship team.That is the beauty of the Wild Card.It keeps the door open.But over time, as the postseason field has expanded, the road has also become more complicated.From 2012 through 2021, when Major League Baseball used the two Wild Card format, only two Wild Card teams won the World Series: the 2014 San Francisco Giants and the 2019 Washington Nationals.Since the current three Wild Card format began in 2022, only one Wild Card team has won it all: the 2023 Texas Rangers.That does not mean Wild Card teams cannot win.They can.The Cardinals have lived it.But it does mean the expanded format should not fool anyone into thinking October has become easier to conquer. More teams may reach the postseason, but more teams also stand in the way. More rounds create more volatility. A short series can punish one bad start, one cold week, one shaky bullpen inning, or one lineup that stops hitting with runners in scoring position.October is bigger now.It is also harder to survive.That is the part teams on the bubble cannot afford to ignore.The phrase “just get in” has become common in baseball, and there is value in it. Once a team reaches the postseason, anything can happen. But “just get in” cannot become a substitute for improving the roster. It cannot become an excuse for standing still. It cannot become a reason to treat the current season like a bridge to something supposedly better down the road.That is how teams waste chances.The Cardinals do not need to mortgage the future for a reckless deadline splash. That would be foolish. This organization still needs to protect its best young players, build a better pitching pipeline, and avoid the kind of short-term thinking that leaves a roster thin and expensive two years from now.But there is a difference between being disciplined and being passive.If the Cardinals are in the postseason race, the front office has to treat the race as real. Not because this team is perfect. It is not. Not because they are one move away from becoming the best club in baseball. They are not. But because playoff chances are never guaranteed to come around again on schedule.The idea that next year will automatically be better is one of the most dangerous assumptions in baseball.Next year, someone gets hurt.Next year, a reliever who was automatic becomes ordinary.Next year, a young hitter takes a step back.Next year, a division rival adds two starters and a middle-of-the-order bat.Next year, the same Wild Card spot that looked available suddenly belongs to somebody else.That is the danger of waiting.The Cardinals have a chance right now. It may be imperfect. It may be unexpected. It may not fit neatly into the original plan for the season. But opportunity does not care whether it arrived on schedule.It is here.And that should mean something.The front office can still be smart. It can still protect the core. It can still refuse to overpay for rentals. It can still think about 2027 and beyond. But if there is a way to improve the current club without gutting the future, the Cardinals have to explore it.A controllable starter matters.A bullpen upgrade matters.A bench bat who can lengthen the lineup matters.Turning short-term pieces into help that fits now and later matters.Standing still while calling it patience does not.The Cardinals’ history is built on more than simply participating. This franchise has always been at its best when it believed October was worth chasing. Not recklessly. Not foolishly. But seriously.That standard should not change because the postseason field is larger.If anything, it should sharpen the urgency.More teams get invited now, but only one survives.The expanded Wild Card era has made October more accessible, but it has not made the World Series easier to win. The path is crowded. The margin is thin. The pressure is real. And for bubble teams, the window can close faster than anyone expects.That is why the Cardinals cannot look past this season.They cannot assume the same chance will be sitting there next year, polished up and waiting.Baseball does not work that way.If the door to October is open, even a little, the Cardinals owe it to the clubhouse, the fan base and the tradition of this franchise to walk through it with purpose.Postseason windows do not stay open forever.The Cardinals should know that.And they should act like it. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Open Atlanta Series With 5-3 Win Over Braves St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals needed a road win.They got one Tuesday night in Atlanta.After a rough homestand and a frustrating stretch of quiet offense, the Cardinals opened their three-game series against the Braves with a 5-3 win at Truist Park, using a fourth-inning power surge, a productive at-bat from Blaze Jordan, and a needed rebound start from Matthew Liberatore to take the first game of the series.It was not perfect.But it was a win against a first-place club on the road, and the Cardinals were in no position to apologize for style points.Liberatore gave St. Louis exactly what it needed. The left-hander worked five innings, allowing one run on one hit, walking four and striking out nine. It was not a spotless line because the walks kept traffic around the edges, but the swing-and-miss was real, and for a pitcher who badly needed a positive turn, this was an important one.That was the first encouraging sign of the night.The second came from the bottom of the lineup.Atlanta struck first in the third inning when Jorge Mateo reached, stole second, and came home on Ozzie Albies’ sacrifice fly to left. That gave the Braves a 1-0 lead and put the Cardinals in a familiar position — chasing a game early.This time, St. Louis answered quickly.Nelson Velázquez led off the fourth inning and jumped on Martín Pérez, driving a solo home run to center field to tie the game at 1-1. It was Velázquez’s third home run of the season, and it gave the Cardinals the kind of immediate response they have too often lacked during this recent stretch.The inning did not stop there.Masyn Winn reached, Lars Nootbaar singled, and the Cardinals put two aboard for Nathan Church. Church turned the inning into the game’s defining moment, launching a three-run homer to right field to give St. Louis a 4-1 lead.That was the swing the Cardinals had been waiting for.Not just because it put them ahead, but because it came from a player who has been asked to provide value in different ways. Church has not had to be the loudest bat in the lineup to matter. He can defend, run, take a professional at-bat, and on Tuesday night, he delivered the biggest blow of the game.The Cardinals needed a separator.Church gave them one.From there, Liberatore had a lead to protect, and he did his job. He continued to miss bats, worked through his own traffic, and kept Atlanta from turning the game back around. The Braves managed just one hit against him, and while the four walks kept the outing from being completely clean, the strikeout total showed the quality of the stuff.For five innings, Liberatore looked like a pitcher who could control a game.That mattered.The Cardinals added another run in the sixth. Winn walked, stole second, moved into position, and Blaze Jordan lifted a sacrifice fly to bring him home. It was not a big swing, but it was a winning at-bat. In a game that ended by two runs, that kind of situational production mattered.Jordan did not need to leave the yard to help win the game.He just needed to get the run in.The Cardinals led 5-1 at that point, but Atlanta did not go quietly. George Soriano took over in the sixth and handled the first part of the bridge, but the Braves pushed closer in the seventh after JoJo Romero entered.Mateo reached again, and Albies singled to drive him home, cutting the Cardinals’ lead to 5-2. Atlanta made things more uncomfortable in the eighth when Ryan Fernandez uncorked a wild pitch that allowed another run to score, trimming the lead to 5-3.That was close enough to make the final stretch uncomfortable.But the Cardinals had already done enough.St. Louis finished with five runs on six hits. Velázquez led the way with two hits, including the solo homer. Nootbaar had two hits and scored a run. Winn reached, scored twice and stole a base. Church drove in three with the fourth-inning homer. Jordan added the sacrifice fly.It was not a deep offensive explosion, but it was timely.That has been the missing ingredient.The Cardinals did not pile up 12 hits. They did not overwhelm Atlanta inning after inning. They struck when the chances arrived, and that was the difference. Velázquez answered Atlanta’s first run. Church turned the fourth inning into a crooked number. Jordan added the insurance run.That was enough because the pitching finally gave the offense room to breathe.Atlanta finished with three runs on five hits. Albies drove in two of the Braves’ three runs. Mateo scored twice and stole a base. But the middle of the Braves’ order did not take over the game, and that was a credit to the Cardinals’ pitching staff.The win was especially important because of where the Cardinals were coming from.The series against Miami had been ugly offensively. The Cardinals were shut out Friday, held to one run Saturday, and had to grind out a 2-1 win Sunday just to avoid being swept. They entered Atlanta needing something cleaner, something sharper, and something that looked like a club capable of resetting on the road.Tuesday was not a perfect reset.But it was a start.Liberatore’s outing was the headline on the pitching side. Church’s homer was the headline on the offensive side. Velázquez gave the Cardinals a needed jolt. Jordan provided the useful run-scoring out. The bullpen made things tighter than necessary but still kept Atlanta from coming all the way back.That is how a team opens a road series the right way.There will still be things to clean up. The walks from Liberatore kept his pitch count high. The late innings got uncomfortable. The Cardinals still did not get much from the top three spots in the order. There are always details to work through.But after the way the past week had gone, the Cardinals needed a win more than they needed a masterpiece.They got the win. Cardinals Open Atlanta Series With 5-3 Win Over Braves

ARMCHAIR GM — The Cardinal Chronicle Postseason Windows Do Not Stay Open Forever St. Louis, MO By Ray Mileur There is a dangerous phrase that sneaks into baseball conversations this time of year.“Next year.”It sounds reasonable. It sounds patient. It sounds like something a smart front office would say while protecting prospects, managing payroll and refusing to overreact to a good stretch of baseball.But “next year” can also become an excuse.For the St. Louis Cardinals, that is the danger.This team has played its way into the postseason picture, and while nobody should suggest the Cardinals mortgage the future for a two-month rental, they also cannot treat a playoff opportunity like something that will automatically be waiting for them again in 2027, 2028 or even 2029.Baseball does not work that way.Postseason windows rarely remain open for long.That is especially true for teams living on the bubble. A true powerhouse may have enough talent, payroll and depth to survive a bad month, a key injury or a disappointing season from a star player. A bubble team does not have that luxury. A bubble team has to take advantage of the moment because the margin is thin and the sport is unforgiving.The Cardinals are not in a position to take October for granted.They have surprised people. They have exceeded expectations. They have found themselves in a much more interesting place than many expected when the season began. That should matter. The players have earned the right to be taken seriously, and the front office has an obligation to recognize that this season is not disposable.That does not mean reckless buying.It does mean refusing to punt the present simply because the future looks promising.There is always a temptation to believe young teams naturally improve. Fans see young talent and assume the arrow only points up. Front offices see payroll flexibility and assume they will have more options later. Analysts see prospects coming and assume the roster will be deeper next season.Sometimes that happens.Often, it does not.Baseball has a way of humbling long-range plans.Players get hurt. Pitchers break down. Role players depart. Career-best seasons regress. Young hitters face adjustments. Bullpens churn. Division rivals get aggressive. A team that looks one move away in July can seem three moves short by the following April.That is why “we’ll get them next year” is not a strategy.It is a hope.The Cardinals should know better than most organizations that chemistry is hard to repeat. A club can look imperfect on paper and still fit together in a way that wins games. A bullpen can overachieve. A young lineup can bring energy. A few veterans can stabilize the room. A manager can find the right combinations. A team can develop a personality.Then the offseason comes, and the whole thing changes.A reliever signs elsewhere. A bench player gets a better opportunity. A starter breaks down. A young player takes a step back. A rival improves. Suddenly, the same team that was “built for the future” is trying to rediscover the present. That is the trap.The Cardinals do not have to empty the farm system to avoid that trap. That is not the argument. Chaim Bloom should not abandon the work he has started. The Cardinals need a better talent pipeline. They need payroll flexibility. They need controllable pitching. They need young players to become long-term answers.All of that is true.But it is also true that winning now still matters.The trick is not choosing between today and tomorrow. The trick is understanding that today may be part of the window.That is where the Cardinals’ deadline approach becomes so important. If St. Louis is still positioned in the National League playoff race, the front office cannot act like this is merely a development season with a nice record attached. A playoff chase is not a nuisance. It is the point of the whole operation.Fans do not show up to Busch Stadium to hear about theoretical roster optimization.They show up because October still means something in St. Louis.That tradition should not be treated like a burden.The Cardinals do not need to trade top-tier prospects for a rental starter. They do not need to pretend they are one player away from being the best team in baseball.But they do need to improve where they can.If there is a controllable starting pitcher available, make the call. If there is a bullpen upgrade that does not damage the future, pursue it. If there is a way to use short-term assets to strengthen the club now and later, do it. If the Cardinals can sell from one area and buy in another, that may be the smartest path of all.What they cannot do is stand still and hide behind next year.The National League playoff race is too volatile for that. One division rival getting hot can turn a comfortable spot into a chase.There is nothing guaranteed about being “on track for 2027, 2028 or even 2029.The Wild Card era has created the illusion that there is always another path. Another spot. Another chance. Another opening. But that also means more teams remain aggressive deeper into the summer. More teams think they have a shot. More teams are looking for the same pitching, the same bullpen help, the same incremental edge.If the Cardinals wait too long, the market may decide for them.That is why this season demands a sense of urgency.Not desperation.Urgency.There is a difference.Desperation is trading the future for a short-term fix because the front office wants to win the press conference. Urgency is recognizing the standings, respecting the clubhouse, and making moves that improve the team without wrecking the long-term plan.That is the lane the Cardinals need to stay in.The danger of taking next year for granted is that next year may not look anything like this one. The young players may not all move forward at the same pace. The health may not hold. The bullpen may not repeat. The schedule may not break the same way. The Central may get tougher. The front office may discover that the players it thought would be available are no longer there. Baseball windows do not send a warning before they close.Sometimes they slam shut while everyone is still talking about the future.The Cardinals have an opportunity right now. It may be imperfect. It may be unexpected. It may not fit the original offseason plan. But opportunity does not care whether it arrived on schedule.It is here.That should mean something.The Cardinals can protect their best prospects and still try to win. They can keep the future in mind and still honor the present. They can avoid recklessness without drifting into complacency.But they cannot assume this will be easier next year.That is how teams waste seasons.That is how front offices talk themselves into inactivity.That is how a fan base gets told to wait, and then wait again, and then wait some more.The Cardinals should be past that.This franchise has thrived by refusing to choose between competing and building—a standard that must endure. The Cardinal Chronicle McGreevy Gets the Ball as Cardinals Look to Take Series in Atlanta St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals opened their road series in Atlanta with the kind of win they needed.Now comes the follow-up.After beating the Braves 5-3 Tuesday night at Truist Park, St. Louis returns Wednesday looking to take the first two games of the series and secure another road series win against one of the National League’s top clubs.First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. CT, with right-hander Michael McGreevy getting the ball for the Cardinals against Braves right-hander Reynaldo López.The Cardinals enter the night at 44-38, while Atlanta comes in at 49-34 and still sits atop the National League East. The Braves may be in a rough stretch, but this is still a first-place club with power, pitching and enough experience to punish a team that assumes one good night will carry over into the next.That is the trap the Cardinals have to avoid.Tuesday night was a strong opener for St. Louis. Matthew Liberatore bounced back from a difficult stretch and gave the Cardinals five effective innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out nine. That was exactly the kind of start the club needed after a rough run from the pitching staff in recent weeks.The offense gave him just enough help.Nelson Velázquez opened the fourth inning with a long solo home run, and Nathan Church followed later in the frame with a three-run shot to give the Cardinals control of the game. Church’s homer was his sixth of the season and his first since April 26, ending a long drought at a good time. Masyn Winn added pressure on the bases in the sixth, eventually scoring on Blaze Jordan’s sacrifice fly.That was not a perfect win, but it was a useful one.The Braves pushed late, trimming the lead and loading the bases in the eighth inning, but the Cardinals survived the threat. Riley O’Brien then handled the ninth for his 21st save, giving St. Louis a second straight win after a difficult stretch that had raised plenty of fair questions about the club’s footing.Now McGreevy gets the chance to keep the line moving.McGreevy enters at 3-6 with a 3.12 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 57 strikeouts. His record does not tell the full story. He has been one of the more stabilizing arms in the Cardinals’ rotation, not because he overwhelms hitters, but because he pitches with a plan. He changes speeds, works the edges, keeps the ball around the strike zone and gives his defense a chance to make plays behind him.That kind of start plays anywhere.It especially plays on the road against a Braves lineup that can turn mistakes into damage quickly.Atlanta still has Matt Olson in the middle of the order, and he remains one of the primary power threats the Cardinals have to handle. Michael Harris II has been one of Atlanta’s steadier bats, and Ozzie Albies showed Tuesday that he can still create runs when given an opening. Even with Ronald Acuña Jr. on the injured list, this is not a lineup the Cardinals can treat lightly.McGreevy has to keep Atlanta from building traffic.That means no free passes ahead of the power bats. No leadoff walks. No middle-middle mistakes when the Braves have runners aboard. The Cardinals do not need him to chase strikeouts. They need him to stay in control of the game, cover innings and keep Atlanta from turning one swing into a crooked number.The matchup against López will not be easy.López enters at 3-1 with a 3.47 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP and 40 strikeouts. He has enough stuff to make the Cardinals work, and St. Louis cannot afford to give him quick innings by chasing early. The Cardinals’ best offensive approach is the same one that worked Tuesday: create traffic, force mistakes and make the bottom half of the lineup matter.That last part was important in the opener.Velázquez and Church supplied the biggest swings. Winn created a run with his legs. Blaze Jordan brought home an insurance run with a sacrifice fly. Those are the kinds of contributions the Cardinals need if they are going to keep winning against good teams.Jordan Walker remains the central power threat in the lineup, entering the game with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs. Alec Burleson continues to give St. Louis a steady left-handed bat. Iván Herrera’s on-base ability remains important when he is in the lineup. JJ Wetherholt has to continue setting the table. Winn has to keep applying pressure with the glove, the arm and the legs.The Cardinals do not need every night to be a slugfest.They need complete baseball.That means competitive at-bats, cleaner execution, enough starting pitching, and bullpen outs that do not require everyone in the press box to check their pulse. Tuesday had some late stress, but it also had enough of the right things to win a road game against a first-place opponent.Wednesday is about turning that into a series win.Atlanta has lost three straight and has dropped 13 of its last 17 games. That makes the Braves vulnerable, but not harmless. In some ways, it makes them more dangerous. A good team on a bad run is usually one swing, one clean start or one big inning away from looking like itself again.The Cardinals cannot give them that opening.St. Louis has been trying to prove it belongs in the contender conversation, and games like this matter. Beating Atlanta once is a good start. Taking the series in the first two games would be better.
