Development Isn’t Linear — And That’s Why Patience Still Matters

For years I’ve watched how people evaluate player development — and most of the time, we expect it to move in a straight line.

It doesn’t.

Growth, whether in baseball, leadership, or life, is layered. What looks like regression is often a foundation being built underneath.

We tend to think development should move in a straight line.

Every month better than the last. Every season an improvement. No regression.

No detours.

That’s not how real growth works — not in baseball, not in leadership, not anywhere that matters.

Development isn’t linear.

It’s layered.

What looks like a setback on the surface is often a layer being added underneath.

A young hitter struggles after a promotion. The numbers dip. The noise rises.

But maybe he’s learning pitch recognition. Maybe he’s adjusting to sequencing.

Maybe he’s learning how to handle failure at a higher level.

Those lessons don’t always show up in the box score. But they stack.

That’s the difference between management and leadership.

Management tracks performance.

Leadership builds people.

Management asks, “Did you execute today?”

Leadership asks, “What are you becoming?”

In a 162-game season, management moves pieces around a lineup card.

Over multiple seasons, leadership builds a culture that sustains success.

The organizations that last understand this.

They don’t panic over a bad month in Double-A.

They don’t define a player by one slump.

They don’t confuse temporary regression with long-term failure.

They understand layers.

Layered development requires patience — not passive patience, but informed patience.

The kind that trusts process without being blind to reality.

The kind that evaluates trends without overreacting to noise.

The kind that knows fundamentals still matter.

Box scores are linear. Culture isn’t.

Culture is built in film rooms, in quiet corrections, in veterans pulling aside rookies, in expectations that don’t change when results fluctuate.

That’s where leadership lives.

And that’s why patience still matters.

Because if development were linear, you could measure it and predict it.

But because it’s layered, you have to trust what’s being built even when you can’t yet see it.

Sustainable success has always required that kind of discipline.
