The Cardinals’ farm system went 3-0 in completed games Saturday night, with Memphis, Peoria and Palm Beach all landing in the win column. Springfield’s game against Wichita was suspended by rain in the top of the seventh inning and will be completed Sunday.
It was a strong night across the system. Memphis pounded Omaha, Peoria jumped Wisconsin early and never looked back, and Palm Beach delivered another walk-off win in Jupiter.
Memphis Redbirds
Record: 34-22, 1st Place, International League, West
Result: Memphis 13, Omaha 1
Memphis put together one of its most complete offensive nights of the season, rolling past Omaha 13-1 on Saturday night at Werner Park. The win gave the Redbirds a series victory and moved them to 34-22.
Blaze Jordan led the way with a career night, going 5-for-6 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored. It was a new professional career high in hits for the Southaven, Mississippi native, and his second four-plus hit game of the series.
The Redbirds did not stop there. All nine Memphis starters recorded at least one hit, and eight of the nine scored a run. Leo Bernal added three hits, César Prieto went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in his first game back with Memphis after being optioned by St. Louis, and Bligh Madris also drove in three runs.
Brycen Mautz gave Memphis a strong start, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out seven over 4.0-plus innings. Max Rajcic followed with a scoreless frame and lowered his team-best ERA to 1.60. Cade Winquest and Ryan Murphy finished it off with four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Springfield Cardinals
Record: 21-27, 9.0 GB, Texas League North
Result: Suspended
Springfield’s Saturday night doubleheader against Wichita was interrupted by rain, with the opener suspended in the top of the seventh inning. The scheduled seven-inning game will resume Sunday at 2:15 p.m., followed by a nine-inning game approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended contest.
There is no completed result to report for Springfield from Saturday, so the Cardinals remain 21-27 entering Sunday’s resumed action.
Peoria Chiefs
Record: 24-26, 4th Place, Midwest League West
Result: Peoria 8, Wisconsin 3
Peoria wasted no time Saturday night, jumping on Wisconsin from the first pitch and riding that early momentum to an 8-3 win. The victory clinched Peoria’s second consecutive series win.
Jesús Báez opened the game with a leadoff home run on the first pitch. Two pitches later, Jack Gurevitch followed with a homer of his own, giving the Chiefs back-to-back home runs and a 2-0 lead before Wisconsin could settle in.
Jacob Odle made his High-A debut for Peoria and had to work around six walks, but he limited the damage to one earned run over 3.2 innings while striking out three. It was not the cleanest line, but it was a useful first step at the next level.
The Chiefs added a run in the third on an RBI single from Jalin Flores, then broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Six straight Peoria hitters reached base with two outs, with José Suárez, Jose Cordoba and Flores delivering RBI hits in the rally.
Christian Worley handled two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, and José Davila finished it with a clean ninth. That is how a team turns an early lead into a comfortable road win.
Palm Beach Cardinals
Record: 28-22, Tied for 1st Place, Florida State League East
Result: Palm Beach 7, Lakeland 6
Palm Beach did it again. For the second time in the series, the Cardinals walked off Lakeland, this time with a 7-6 win Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Palm Beach built an early lead behind run-producing swings from Michael Dattalo and Jonathan Mejia. Dattalo drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning, then added an RBI single in the third. Mejia later launched his seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth that gave Palm Beach a 5-2 lead.
Lakeland rallied, tying the game in the sixth and taking a 6-5 lead in the seventh, but Palm Beach answered. Chase Heath tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, then came through again in the ninth with a walk-off infield single up the third-base line to score Ryan Mitchell.
Dylan Driessen was outstanding out of the bullpen, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings and striking out four to keep Palm Beach within reach. That late work gave the Cardinals a chance to win it, and Heath finished the job.
Matthew Miura had three hits at the top of the lineup, while Dattalo went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBIs. Heath finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and now has five RBIs over his last two games.
Player of the Day
Blaze Jordan, Memphis Redbirds
Blaze Jordan is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Player of the Day after going 5-for-6 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored in Memphis’ 13-1 win over Omaha.
That is not just a good night. That is a career night.
Jordan set a new professional career high with five hits, added to his team lead in hits, and helped drive a Memphis offense that saw all nine starters record at least one hit. On a night filled with good offensive performances across the system, Jordan’s five-hit game stood above the rest.
Strong mention goes to Michael Dattalo and Chase Heath for Palm Beach. Dattalo had three hits and two RBIs, while Heath delivered the walk-off winner. But five hits from Jordan made this an easy call.
Pitcher of the Day
Dylan Driessen, Palm Beach Cardinals
Dylan Driessen earns The Cardinal Chronicle’s Pitcher of the Day honors after throwing 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in Palm Beach’s 7-6 walk-off win over Lakeland.
Driessen entered with the game still hanging in the balance and gave Palm Beach exactly what it needed: shutdown relief. He kept Lakeland off the board late, held the score where it was, and gave the Cardinals’ offense a chance to finish the night.
Brycen Mautz deserves strong mention after allowing just one unearned run and striking out seven for Memphis, while Christian Worley also gave Peoria two clean innings. But Driessen’s late-game work in a one-run walk-off win gets the nod.
