Rainiel Rodriguez added a hit, a walk and an RBI.The problem was run prevention. Blake Aita allowed 11 runs, nine earned, over four innings. Northwest Arkansas finished with 17 hits and five home runs. Jack Findlay did provide two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Nolan Sparks struck out three in a scoreless eighth.Takeaway: Springfield is still in first place, but the Cardinals have now lost four straight. The offense kept fighting, but the early damage was too much.Peoria Chiefs — High-A Overall Record: 53-55 Second Half: 21-21, 5th in the Midwest League West, 4.5 GB Streak: L1Beloit 7, Peoria 6 — 10 inningsPeoria nearly pulled off another late rally, but the Chiefs came up one run short in extra innings.Beloit scored four runs in the top of the 10th. Peoria answered with three in the bottom half, but the comeback stopped there in a 7-6 loss at Dozer Park.Brayden Smith hit his first home run of the season and drove in two. Cade McGee had two hits, a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Ian Petrutz walked twice and scored twice, while Sammy Hernandez singled, walked and stole his 17th base.On the mound, Ty Van Dyke gave Peoria five innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinals Rally Falls Short Against Phillies St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe St. Louis Cardinals made it interesting.They made it uncomfortable.They made Philadelphia work all the way to the final outs.But they did not finish the comeback.The Cardinals fell to the Phillies, 6-5, Monday night at Busch Stadium, dropping the opener of a three-game series that carries real weight in the National League Wild Card picture.This one had the look of a quiet loss for most of the night. Philadelphia built a 6-2 lead, the Cardinals’ offense did not do much early, and St. Louis appeared headed toward another one of those games where the late innings felt more like formality than fight.Then the eighth inning happened.The Cardinals finally broke through against the Philadelphia bullpen, putting together the kind of late rally that has too often been missing. Iván Herrera doubled. Alec Burleson doubled him home. Jordan Walker singled. Masyn Winn doubled in Burleson. José Fermín singled to center, scoring Walker and moving Winn to third.Just like that, 6-2 became 6-5.Busch Stadium had life.The tying run was 90 feet away.The Cardinals had the game sitting there.They just could not push the final run across.That was the story of the night.Enough fight to make it close.Not enough finish to win it.Philadelphia grabbed the lead in the second inning, and the Cardinals helped open the door. Brandon Marsh singled to right, and Derek Hill reached on a throwing error by Hunter Dobbins, allowing Marsh to score and Hill to advance all the way to third.Edmundo Sosa, facing his former club, followed with a single to left-center field, scoring Hill and giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.The inning was costly, but Dobbins did well to prevent it from getting worse. Garrett Stubbs struck out, Kyle Schwarber walked, and Bryson Stott flew out to end the inning.Still, the Cardinals were chasing early.Dobbins settled in after that and gave St. Louis a chance. He worked five innings, allowed four hits, three runs, only one earned, walked three and struck out six. It was not his sharpest outing, and the error in the second hurt him, but he kept the game from getting away.Philadelphia added a run in the fifth after Schwarber singled and moved to second on a Jordan Walker fielding error. Stott followed with a single, putting runners at the corners. Bryce Harper then grounded into a double play, with Schwarber scoring to make it 3-0.The Cardinals were not doing much against Phillies rookie Andrew Painter through five innings. Painter kept St. Louis hitless until the sixth and used his fastball and breaking ball well enough to keep the Cardinals from finding any rhythm.But the sixth finally brought a response.César Prieto grounded out to start the inning before JJ Wetherholt drew a walk. Herrera followed with a double to deep left, putting two runners in scoring position.Burleson came through with the first big Cardinals swing of the night, singling to right-center field to score both Wetherholt and Herrera.That cut the deficit to 3-2.For a moment, the Cardinals had Painter on the ropes. Alan Rangel came in from the bullpen, and after Jordan Walker struck out, Nathan Church singled to right, moving Burleson to second. Masyn Winn struck out to end the threat, but St. Louis was back in the game.The problem was the Phillies answered immediately.Luis Gastelum started the seventh and struck out Sosa, but Caleb Ferguson came in and could not find the strike zone. Stubbs walked, Schwarber doubled to deep right-center to score him, and the Phillies stretched the lead to 4-2.Ferguson then walked Stott and Harper to load the bases, forcing Oliver Marmol to go to Gordon Graceffo.Graceffo got the ground ball the Cardinals needed. Luis Arraez hit into a double play, and St. Louis escaped with only one run allowed.That kept the game close.But the eighth hurt.Graceffo walked Marsh, and Justin Crawford followed with a double to deep right, putting two runners in scoring position. Sosa then delivered again, driving a double to deep center to score both runners and give Philadelphia a 6-2 lead.That looked like the backbreaker.Sosa finished with two hits and three RBIs, doing much of the damage against his former organization. Schwarber also had two hits, including the RBI double in the seventh.The Cardinals had every reason to fold after falling behind by four runs.They did not.Herrera opened the bottom of the eighth with his second double of the game. Burleson followed with a double to right, scoring Herrera and making it 6-3. Walker singled to center, moving Burleson to third.Church popped out, but Winn kept the inning alive with a double to right. Burleson scored, Walker moved to third, and the Cardinals were within 6-4.Fermín then lined a single to center, scoring Walker and moving Winn to third.Now it was 6-5.The Phillies were on their heels.The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game.But that was as close as they got.St. Louis finished with eight hits, and most of the damage came late. Burleson drove in three runs. Herrera doubled twice and scored twice. Walker had a hit and scored. Winn drove in a run with his 17th double. Fermín reached multiple times and delivered the final RBI.There were positives.There was fight.There was a late push.But there was also another loss in a game the Cardinals could not afford to let slip away.That is the hard part.The Phillies entered the series as one of the teams St. Louis is trying to chase in the National League Wild Card race. Head-to-head games like this matter. The Cardinals do not need moral victories in August. They need wins, especially at home, especially against the clubs sitting in front of them.Monday night, they almost stole one back.Almost does not count in the standings.The Cardinals fell behind early, made two defensive mistakes, let Philadelphia add on late, and then watched the rally come up one run short.That is a tough way to open the series.Now St. Louis has to answer quickly. There are still two games left against Philadelphia, but the Cardinals have already lost the first one. If they want this series to matter in the right way, Tuesday becomes a response game.The eighth inning showed the Cardinals still had some fight.The final score showed they needed one more swing.The Bottom Line The Cardinals fought back.They did not finish it.Philadelphia built a 6-2 lead, St. Louis rallied for three in the eighth, and the tying run reached third base. The Cardinal Chronicle Sammy Hernandez Named Cardinals Minor League Player of the Week St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurSammy Hernandez made his case with power, patience and production.Hernandez, the High-A Peoria catcher, is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Cardinals Minor League Hitter of the Week after putting together the strongest offensive stretch in the system.Over five games, Hernandez went 5-for-16 with one double, three home runs, five RBIs, six runs scored, four walks and three stolen bases. He hit .313 and posted a loud 1.387 OPS, finishing with the top hitter value of the week at 28.That is a complete offensive week.The home runs are the headline, and they should be. Three long balls in five games from a catcher will always get attention. But Hernandez did more than just run into a few pitches. He reached base, drove in runs, scored runs and even added three stolen bases.That is not something you see every week from a catcher.For Hernandez, this was the kind of performance that shows why offensive production from behind the plate carries extra weight. Catchers who can impact the baseball are valuable. Catchers who can impact the baseball, draw walks and add something on the bases become even more interesting.There were other strong candidates.Nolan Gorman had a power-heavy week at Triple-A Memphis, hitting three home runs and driving in six. His 1.018 OPS was strong, but the eight strikeouts in 20 at-bats kept Hernandez ahead in the weekly race.Yairo Padilla also deserves mention after a solid week for Low-A Palm Beach. Padilla went 7-for-23 with three doubles, one home run, four RBIs, three walks, two stolen bases and a .950 OPS. It was a quality all-around stretch, especially from a young bat still building his profile.But this week belonged to Hernandez.The combination of power, on-base production, run creation and baserunning gave him the edge. His 1.387 OPS separated him from the field, and the three home runs made the decision clear.At High-A, hitters are being challenged more consistently with better breaking balls, better sequencing and pitchers who have a better idea of how to attack weaknesses. The Cardinal Chronicle Brian Holiday Named Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Week St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurBrian Holiday did not leave much room for debate.Holiday, pitching for Low-A Palm Beach, is The Cardinal Chronicle’s Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Week after putting together one of the most dominant strikeout performances in the Cardinals’ system.The right-hander worked 5.2 scoreless innings, allowed only two hits, walked none and struck out 12. He did not allow a home run, finished with a 0.00 ERA, a 0.35 WHIP and posted the top overall pitching value of the week at 22.3.That is how a pitcher separates himself.There were other strong candidates. Blake Aita delivered a quality start for Double-A Springfield, working 6.1 innings with one earned run, no walks and six strikeouts. Liam Doyle also pushed his way into the discussion with 4.1 innings, eight strikeouts and only one earned run allowed at Double-A.But Holiday’s line had the loudest combination of dominance and command.Twelve strikeouts in fewer than six innings will grab attention by itself. Doing it with zero walks is what made the outing special. Holiday did not simply miss bats. He controlled the strike zone, avoided free traffic and kept Palm Beach in command from the mound.That matters at any level.Low-A pitching lines can sometimes be weighed differently than upper-level performances, and that is fair. Aita and Doyle both deserve credit for doing their work at Double-A. But Holiday’s margin of dominance was too strong to overlook. Two hits. No walks. No runs. Twelve strikeouts. That is a weekly award-winning performance.For a developing arm, the cleanest sign is not always velocity or raw stuff. Sometimes it is the ability to attack hitters, finish counts and keep the game from getting messy. Holiday did all of that.The strikeout total was the headline. The walk column was the separator.When a pitcher can miss that many bats without handing out free passes, it shows more than a hot outing. It shows execution. It shows confidence. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Look to Reset After Phillies Take Series Opener St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals had a chance Monday night to start a big series the right way with a win at home in front of the hometown fateful, but they let it slip away, again.Now how does the team, with such low expecations for the season from the front office responsed after that loss matters.St. Louis hosts the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at Busch Stadium in the second game of a three-game series that carries real weight in the National League Wild Card race. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT, with right-hander Andre Pallante getting the ball for the Cardinals against Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez.The Phillies enter at 64-56, while the Cardinals come in at 59-60. Philadelphia leads the series 1-0 after Monday’s 6-5 win, and St. Louis is once again trying to climb back to .500 after missing a chance to get there in the opener.That is the frustrating part.The Cardinals did not get buried Monday. They were not blown out. They had chances. Alec Burleson drove in three runs. Iván Herrera had two hits and scored twice. The offense made the game tight late, but Philadelphia had already done enough to hold on.Former Cardinal Edmundo Sosa hurt St. Louis, collecting two hits and driving in three runs for the Phillies. Kyle Schwarber reached four times with two hits and two walks, and Andrew Painter kept the Cardinals hitless into the sixth inning before St. Louis finally started to push back.That is not a winning formula.The Cardinals cannot wait until the middle or late innings to begin competing offensively, especially against a team they are chasing. Philadelphia has enough starting pitching, enough power and enough bullpen arms to make a slow start feel expensive.Tonight, the challenge gets even tougher.Sánchez enters at 15-4 with a 2.65 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 174 strikeouts. He has been one of the National League’s better starters this season, and he gives Philadelphia a left-handed arm capable of controlling the strike zone, missing bats and keeping a lineup uncomfortable.The Cardinals have to make him work.That does not mean chasing early-count damage just because Monday got away. It means disciplined aggression. Make Sánchez throw strikes. Do not expand the zone. Get traffic when possible. Force him to pitch from the stretch. And when he makes a mistake, do not miss it.The Cardinals are not likely to get many cheap chances tonight.They have to earn them.Burleson remains one of the key bats in the lineup, and Monday was another reminder of why his bat matters. Herrera continues to be one of the club’s most important offensive pieces. Jordan Walker has to remain a threat in the middle of the order. JJ Wetherholt, Masyn Winn, Nathan Church, Blaze Jordan, José Fermín, Jimmy Crooks and the rest of the lineup have to make sure Sánchez cannot simply work around one or two hitters.This has to be a full-lineup night with the committment to leave everything on the field for the game in front of them tonight.The Cardinals need better at-bats early, better execution with runners on base and more pressure before the eighth or ninth inning. Against a pitcher like Sánchez, falling behind and hoping for a late rally is not much of a plan.Pallante gets the ball for St. Louis, and his assignment is just as important.He enters at 12-6 with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.22 WHIP and 90 strikeouts. Pallante has been one of the more valuable arms on this Cardinals staff because he gives them competitive innings, keeps the ball on the ground and can settle a game when he is working ahead.The Cardinals need that version tonight.Philadelphia’s lineup is not built around one bat. Schwarber brings the obvious power threat. Bryce Harper remains dangerous in the middle of the order. Trea Turner can change a game with his bat and legs. Brandon Marsh, Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, J.T. Realmuto and the rest of the Phillies lineup give them enough depth to make a pitcher work.Pallante cannot give them extra outs, extra baserunners, that means no leadoff walks. No free baserunners in front of Schwarber or Harper. No missed locations in hitter’s counts. No early inning that forces the Cardinals to chase uphill all night.That has been the difference too often this season. When the Cardinals get a steady start, they can play a normal baseball game. When they fall behind early or ask the bullpen to cover too much, the whole night starts to tilt.Tonight needs structure.Pallante does not have to be perfect. He does have to keep the Phillies from stacking traffic and forcing the Cardinals into another game where every late at-bat feels like a rescue mission.The standings make this bigger.The Cardinals have spent too much of the season hovering around .500. They get close, fall back, climb again, and then have to restart the same conversation. At some point, if they want August to matter, they have to stop circling even and start moving past it.This series is one of those chances.Philadelphia is directly in front of St. Louis in the Wild Card picture. Winning this series would not fix everything, but losing it would make the climb steeper. A hot week in Memphis sparks calls for his return: bring him back, give him another chance, the Cardinals need power. What’s the harm?That is the wrong question.The better question is this:What has actually changed?Until the answer is more than “he hit another home run,” the Cardinals should just say no.Not forever.Not because Nolan Gorman cannot still become a useful major league hitter.Not because the power is fake.But because the problem that sent him to Triple-A has not been solved yet. Gorman was optioned to Memphis on June 12 after one of the roughest offensive stretches of his career. He was hitting .194 with a .598 OPS and had struck out 74 times in 201 at-bats. The demotion wasn’t about fatigue or frustration — it was about at-bats that had become too fragile, too predictable, too easy for major league pitching to exploit.That is the part that cannot be skipped.Power was never the question with Gorman.He can hit a baseball as far as almost anyone in the organization. That is why the Cardinals have given him so much runway. That is why fans keep coming back to the possibility. Left-handed power is not easy to find, and Gorman has shown enough of it at the major league level to keep the door open.But power without enough contact becomes a tease.That is where the Cardinals have to be honest.The issue is not whether Gorman can run into a fastball in Memphis. He can. The issue is whether he can build a repeatable enough swing and approach to survive against major league pitching over time.Right now, that answer is still not clear enough.The strikeout problem has followed him to Triple-A — and that matters. They made it clear that this season is about evaluation, reshaping the roster and building toward the next competitive window.That makes rushing Gorman even harder to justify.If the Cardinals are evaluating the future, then evaluate the players who need major league reps.Blaze Jordan deserves a longer runway.That does not mean Jordan is the answer at third base. It does not mean he has won the job. It does not mean the Cardinals should hand him anything. He needs the freedom to make adjustments without the major league scoreboard punishing every mistake.This should be treated as a career correction.Not a timeout.Not a slap on the wrist.Not a message.A correction.The Cardinals have to decide what Gorman is going to be. Is he still a third baseman? Is he a platoon power bat? Is he a first base/DH option? Is he part of the future, or is the best path rebuilding enough value to explore the winter trade market?None of those answers become clearer by rushing him back before the swing-and-miss is under control.The trade-value question matters, too.Gorman’s value is not high right now. That is obvious. If the Cardinals explored moving him around the deadline, they were almost certainly doing it at a discount. Teams do not pay premium prices for a player who just hit .194 in the majors and is still striking out heavily in Triple-A.So do not sell low.But also do not pretend a couple of Memphis home runs rebuild the entire market.The way Gorman regains value is by showing a sustainable approach. That means better contact. Better swing decisions. Better balance. Better results over a longer stretch. If that happens, the Cardinals can revisit the question in the offseason from a stronger position.Maybe they keep him.Maybe they trade him.Maybe he comes to spring training with a real chance to win a role again.But that decision should be based on progress, not impatience.The hardest part of this is separating the player from the idea of the player.The idea of Nolan Gorman is still attractive.A left-handed hitter with 30-homer power who can play third base or second base is exactly the kind of player every team wants. That idea is why the Cardinals have been patient. It is why fans still see the ceiling. It is why nobody should be eager to throw him away.But the actual player, right now, is still fighting the same battle.Too much swing-and-miss.Too low of a floor.Too much dependence on the home run.Too many at-bats where pitchers appear to know how to get him before the count even begins.That is not a player you recall just because the major league roster has room.Room is not a reason.Need is not a reason.Power flashes are not a reason.Progress is the reason.When Gorman starts showing that the at-bats have changed, then the conversation changes. When he strings together consistent contact, controls the zone, handles spin better and forces pitchers to beat him in more than one way, then the Cardinals should revisit it.Until then, the answer should be no.Just say no to the panic recall.Just say no to chasing a quick power fix.Just say no to repeating the same cycle and expecting a different result.Let him earn the next recall with more than a home run total.Because if the Cardinals are serious about fixing the roster, they have to be serious about fixing the player.And with Nolan Gorman, that means patience now.Not panic.Not nostalgia.Not another quick reset.Just say no.For now.
